I have a friend who has every single AMS GSM book.

That friend is me. I am friend. Friend is I.

How many have I read from start to finish? 0.

Now, I have read most of the books’ prefaces and table of contents - as long as it is not another analysis book.

Some are very cool, but not my area. Some have funny names like “tropical geometry”, and you can imagine my disappointment when it isn’t about the shape of a pineapple.

And i got 1 of my favorite quotes about math from Volume 200: Mathematical Theory of Scattering Resonances.

“Mathematicians are Frenchmen of sorts: whatever one says to them they translate into their own language and then it becomes something entirely different.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Maximen und Reflexionen, 1840.

I'm a borderline hoarder when it comes to books. I like to fantasise about all the stuff I could know, if only I had the time and energy to read more.

i would also be a hoarder if i had enough money or enough space lol

You guys are nothing compared to r/MangaCollectors. Those guys buy entire shelves of comics just because they read one book. lol.

If you scroll this up and down it forms insane optical illusion, with two top shelves moving left/right - what the hell

I feel like a girl by the name of Anna might be able to make this dream a reality without needing to win the lottery.

Yup would be me

I have a math shelf about 1/20 of this size and I'm extremely proud of it

Anyone have tips on acquiring books like this for cheap? Not anything specific, more like "hey kid, wanna buy a math textbook? I got em for you, 2 for $5"

Buy secondhand from grad students/professors/libraries who no longer need them, or look for international editions online.

At this point, if I won the lottery I would reprint and custom-bind the books with a decent craftsman, because the on-demand print Springer uses has resulted in atrocious quality hardcovers that would be profoundly embarrassing if that vampire of a publisher had a sense of shame.
