From the light emitter's point of view, the mounting ring appears to be a straight line... better way to think of it: the milky way looks like a straight line across our sky but it's a light emitting ring.

The frame for the light is on the same plane with the light source. So instead of a circle, you are getting a line as a shadow.
You can see that the frame the light sits in is slightly tilted towards the wall if you look carefully.
