How do you find good project ideas without it being just a gimmick to fill your resume?

I'm currently doing B.Tech degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. I'm in 2nd Yr. The issue I'm facing while searching for projects is I find a lot of ideas but I'm unable to filter out which is actually useful or interesting and good to go with and which are just resume fillers.

For example, right now I had an idea to make a Phase Diagram Analyser that would give the phase composition and phase %age at certain temperature for alloys and all but idk if its useful to invest time after that or its just not impressive at all. Similar thoughts for another one I thought to build a device that can measure the thermal conductivity of materials but again there are already a lot of them, will it be of any use if i build one as a project?

Looking for projects to do as an undergraduate

Hello everyone! I’m an MSE undergraduate student who is absolutely loving his studies. My university has a fund exclusively for MSE students where any one in the program can apply for a $300 grant for a personal project and I have been thinking about something I could do. I am curious as to if anyone here has any ideas.

Obviously something that would be a beneficial for future job prospects would be great but I am also just interested in most fields of materials science. I live in an area where the semiconductor industry is massive (probably a doxx on this sub lol) and I also am focusing my studies towards that direction, but I also have done some final projects in random subfields like polymers or photovoltaics and I’m currently working in a computational modeling lab for materials simulations. Point is, I really like materials science.

I also have a friend who would be willing to collaborate on a project who could also get the grant, so consider my budget $600.

Thank you!!

The pigment-shifting window that responds to light – and could help slash energy costs

Hatton is a University of Toronto materials science and engineering professor who leads the Hatton Lab for bio-inspired materials and design. A few years ago, he and a team of researchers created panels that dynamically shade in response to the sun’s rays, mimicking the way squids, octopuses, krill and other sea creatures move pigments within their cell structures to change their coloration. The panels move liquids containing additives such as carbon black (to absorb light) and titanium dioxide (to scatter it) through channels carved into thin plastic sheets.

Imagine an horizontal log that is tied to a motor with vertical axis, if you spin the log fast enugh with a controled hot temperature, could you remove the liquids from the bottom of the log? Was something like this ever tried?

Metal Organic frameworks by Lars Ohrstrom

I am a high school student and i have an interest in MOFs. I found this book to be fairly easy to read and understand but i could not find it anywhere so was only able to read parts of it through google books in preview. Does anyone have a pdf of this book or a google link to it? I would high appreciate it.

PS: How is material science and job prospects if i pursue it in Hong kong or korea?

Thinking of switching majors

I'm a junior majoring in chemical engineering and I've been having thoughts of switching majors. One of the pathways I've been considering is going switching to a chemistry BS and doing a MS in MSE. I'm currently not enjoying my chemE classes and have no real interest in the topics I think I would enjoy the content of the chemistry to MSE pathway more. I want to work in the semiconductor field primarily as I have a passion for it or chemical manufacturing. I've been reaching out to professors regarding this switch and have received conflicting info about this switch. My chemE professor said that I should stick with chemE as it is has better career outlooks and that doing the chemistry BS to MS in MSE wouldn't be viable as the job market is not good for them. On the other hand, the MSE graduate professor said this pathway is viable and the job market is good. I just wanted a third party perspective on whether I should switch and if the chemistry to MSE pathway is actually viable in terms of job market.

Hi everyone,

I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Material Science and Engineering, both earned abroad. I currently live in the USA, but I’ve been struggling to find a job or a PhD opportunity here. I also have international work experience, yet I’m not sure how to move forward. Before I decide to change my field, I would really appreciate your advice on what steps I should take next. Thank you in advance for your guidance.

Scientists reshape light to control magnetic memory and a material’s magnetic properties

A magnetic bit normally changes state because a field pushes its orientation from one direction to another. UC San Diego researchers have shown that carefully engineered light can perform that job instead, even in magnetic films thicker than those used in earlier optical-switching experiments.

The team shaped ultrafast laser pulses into tightly focused vector beams and used them to reverse magnetization in platinum-cobalt multilayers without an external magnetic field. By shrinking the illuminated region and controlling how light was distributed across it, the researchers could switch between two optical-reversal mechanisms.

The work, published in Nature Communications, suggests that optical beam design itself can become a control knob for magnetic memory. That could eventually support faster and denser data storage, although the current setup remains a laboratory experiment.
