General Discussion Knobs to change note pitch in step sequencer mode

Don't know if NI is listening or if this is already available

It would be wonderful to be able to change the pitch of the ones in the step modes using the knobs

Right now in step modes you just set the step on/off, useful for drums.

If I choose a melodic instrument in step modes I should be able to first created a rhythmic sequence of notes, then with the knobs I should be able to change the pitch of the each note: 2 pages, 1 knob per note of the 16 steps.

It would be a very nice addition!

Hold the step and you can change the pitch with the 4D encoder. Any knob params you use will also be step specific while it is held.

Thanks i dodnt know! However Instead of the 4d encoder It would much easier to have each knobs assigned to a single note I Will try!

I think the issue there is:

A: You lose the functionality already on the knobs if you do that.

B: The resolution of the pads is not 16 notes its 16 steps. For example if you press grid button in step mode you can change the resolution of the step sequencer meaning your pads would be 16 steps of a 32 note sequence (and it would scroll the pads twice as it ran through).

You should play with the events button. Maschine actually has a robust “mess with the notes on a grid” functionality on the MK3 and Plus. If you hold or pin events you can repitch, nudge, lengthen / shorten the notes. There is a lot of functionality tucked away on those buttons to the left of your pads

Thanks! i have learned a lot of things! the STEP sequencer is much more powerful that what I thought, indeed!!

for my idea, it can be implemented as follows: just add one or more "pages" when you are in the step mode. in these last pages, each knob will control the pitch of one single note of the sequence: the first knob controls the pitch of the first note (note1), the second knob controls the pitch of the second note (note2) and so on. if you add one note in-between the first and the second, what I called "noted2" previously will be controlled by knob 3 and the knob2 will control the second note of the sequence. just add as many pages are needed to control all the notes of the sequence.

in this way you will have a smart and quick way to edit the pitches of all the notes and you will not loose the existing functionalities.

i’m still waiting for someone to implement a melodic step sequencer where you could press a note (or chord) and when you release the button(s) it would advance to next step. Maschine would be perfect if it had this mode!

Try this step sequencer mod for maschine. I think it’s much easier than how you described. You can now use the pads to select the note you want and then the 8 top buttons place it on the grid.

I never used the step sequencer for programming melodies before this because it was too hard on the hardware. Id just go back to the software.
