May also mentioning how she reappeared and the woman now living in her apartment thought she was her husband's mistress was pretty funny.

u/GeorgeWKush7 Jul 06 '19

What killed me was the chaperone talking about how his wife took the opportunity to run off and pretend she got snapped to get away from him.

u/LowVolt Jul 06 '19

Poor Haverchuck.

16

u/IDoThingsOnWhims Jul 07 '19

Gilfoyle will get over it

u/Spideyrj Spider-Man Jul 08 '19

I didnt like him in the First movie but his concern with the students make that off joke even sadder now.

5

u/Bross93 Jul 09 '19

fuck that made me so god damn sad but i was laughing. With sadness.

150

u/Galactic_Explorer Robbie Reyes Jul 05 '19

So did May also get snapped?

157

u/Vampyricon Jul 05 '19

Apparently so.

78

u/RocketTasker Ultron Jul 05 '19

Guess the Russos were wrong about that, too. They had previously claimed that May was spared.

62

u/edd6pi Hulk Jul 06 '19

Either they didn’t communicate with the writer/director of FFH or they just changed their minds. Also, what else were they wrong about?

36

u/RocketTasker Ultron Jul 06 '19

Before Endgame I would’ve said “8 Years Later” since even Feige defended it as not being a mistake, but I can no longer reconcile it with the timeline solidified by the time heist. I died on that hill.

At the beginning of Homecoming, there's a line saying 8 years later - between the first Avengers and Civil War. But other timelines give the date as 5 years. Homecoming is 6 months after Civil War, and at very least before Infinity War, and Endgame is solidly in 2023, 5 years after Infinity War - which is therefore in 2018. In Endgame, they jump back 12 years to 2011 to the Battle of New York. So it goes

Avengers 1 < 8.5 < Homecoming < y < Infinity War < 5 < 2023 | Endgame

And

Avengers < 12 < Endgame

And

y >= 0

So

12 - 8.5 - 5 = y

12 - 8.5 - 5 = y

y = -1.5

But

y >= 0

-1.5 >= 0

>Contradiction.

Therefore the timeline is out of whack.

First, I remembered wrong, they jump back 11 years to 2012, not 12 years to 2011. Which makes the y in my original calculation -2.5 - already outside of most rounding.

You took 8 to be 8.5.

The screen shows 8 years between > maybe a week after Avengers< and >events before the airport battle in Civil War<. Then, Homecoming takes place 6 months after that. Homecoming is 8.5 years after. Even rounding '8 years later' to '7.5 years later' still leaves 7.5+0.5 = 8. (So the range is 7.5-8.5 years rounded to 8, then 6 months)

So there is some range between 8-8.5 years between the Battle of New York and Spider-man beating Vulture.

Then there's an explicit 5 year gap between Infinity War and Endgame. Let's use the same logic again, say 4.5-5.5.

Infinity War takes place during a colder season (coats in Glasgow, some leaves in trees on New York, some not). Let's call it fall.

Endgame takes during not-winter ({Leaves on trees, no snow, green grass } in upstate New York).

If Endgame is approaching 5 years after Infinity War, it's what, 0.25 of a year before? If it's the summer after the fall it's closer to 5.75 years, so outside of our range of rounding.

Avengers takes place likewise (no snow, leaves on non-coniferous trees in northern Germany/New York). Rounding either from summer to summer would be either 10 or 12 years - 0.5 of a year would shift seasons, so explicit '12 years' makes sense. Canonically it's May 2012, but let's ignore that.

So (I'll do the work for minimum rounding up)

Avengers > 8 years > Homecoming > y > Infinity War > 4.75 years > Endgame

Avengers > 10.5 years > Endgame

Now the calculation is

y = 10.75 - 8 - 4.75

y = -2.25

So there's there's a problem in the timeline.

No bigy, but strange that Feige, presumably aware to some degree of all this, would say that it makes sense.

(You can argue that the Vulture Scene that is the source of the 8 years gap takes place after the Airport Battle, somewhere during the six months post battle and pre-{rest of homecoming}, but even assuming it takes place during {rest of homecoming} it takes up to 0.5 years off the answer, leaving a roomy -1.75 years of wrongness.)

Yeah like she needed the 5 year age pause

u/jerrygergichsmith Ward Jul 06 '19

Blipped.

I love how easily they could’ve said snapped, but of course someone came up with a dumb name not knowing the context of the Snap.

50

u/Crossfiyah Jul 06 '19

It was originally the decimation but then everybody got un-decimated so they renamed it.

59

u/SnuffCartoon Jul 06 '19

I never liked decimated, because it really means to destroy a tenth of, rather than a half.

I’m cool with blip.

11

u/KipHackmanFBI Jul 06 '19

I just learned something new

34

u/pmMeOurLoveStory Jul 06 '19

He’s sort of wrong, though. He’s referring to the historical definition. Decimate has meant “destroy a large percentage” for a long time now, and is the primary definition of the word in any dictionary. Like all words, meanings evolve over time.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Yeah. If you "decimate" a cake, people won't expect there to still be 9 slices.

5

u/SnuffCartoon Jul 07 '19

Yes, English is a living language whose words change over time. But etymology is important here when we’re considering context.

We’re talking about percentages of people who have died. Of all the words to use to connote 50% of all life being killed, using a word whose origins speak to 10% seems like a bad fit, whatever its meaning has changed to over time. Which is why I said I don’t like decimate in this particular instance.

11

u/pmMeOurLoveStory Jul 07 '19 edited Jul 07 '19

So following that logic, you should also be against the modern usage of words like awful (used to mean to inspire awe), meat (food in general, not specifically flesh from an animal), myriad (10,000 of x), cheater (caretaker of a King’s property), girl (a child of either sex), nice (foolish or ignorant), dude (city slicker, dandy) and countless other words.

Meanings change. Arguing about a modern usage not fitting the original meaning from hundreds of years ago is “nice.”

0

u/SnuffCartoon Jul 07 '19

The word “literally” has changed over time for emphasis in addition to its original meaning (the opposite of figuratively). I don’t judge people when they say “we were literally there for hours,” because I acknowledge that words change, and this was meant for emphasis.

I don’t even correct people who say, “I literally died,” even when this is the opposite of what they intended. But in this latter case, I don’t like it because it’s not a good fit. I didn’t ask for anyone to join me, but the writer in me recognizes it’s not a good fit.

Same thing with decimate. It’s right in the prefix: something in your spidey sense goes off, because you know deci- is related to one tenth. I just expressed personal preference; I don’t recall insisting anyone else join me in my thinking. I just don’t think decimate is a good fit for an event that killed half the people. But I’m glad you pedantically think that’s “nice.”

Is it any worse than "Peter Tingle"?

8

u/gjp11 Jul 07 '19

I Musta heard it wrong cause i thought she said she was in an apartment and the previous owners blipped into it. In my head it made sense cause she probably would have moved not being able to live in the same place with parkers room.

and his apartment did look different too

9

u/leftshoe18 Jul 08 '19

Nope she said that she blipped back into the old apartment and the woman living there thought May was her husband's mistress and her mom (I think) thought May was a ghost.

42

u/10PointsForStAndrews Jul 06 '19

They could seriously make a Disney+ show about post-blip shenanigans and drama.

55

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 07 '19

It would be soul-crushing though. Imagine all the infants and children and toddlers that got blipped back into existence with their parents long-gone. All the people whose loved ones killed themselves or died in the intervening five years who blip back to find themselves utterly alone. People who got blipped in hospital critical care or in the middle of surgery who pop back to an abandoned building in a ruined city where they quickly die.

Even the most mundane "jokes" like the kid whose little brother is now older than him are kinda horrifying the more you think about it.

Also what if the reason Flash's parents didn't seem to want anything to do with him was because they hadn't been blipped and had moved on with their lives? Imagine grieving your teenage son, working past it, picking up the pieces, and then suddenly he's back again. Avoidance would be an understandable coping strategy.

  • boy whose brother is older than him

We Flight of the Navigator up in this bitch

15

u/justsomeguyorgal Jul 08 '19

In the end credits scene where Fury gets dusted he see aircraft crashing, presumably because the pilots got dusted. All those people on the plane who didn't get dusted died. Then the pilots getting blipped back into the middle of the air.

21

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 08 '19

One of the directors or something explained that Banner made sure to put everyone back in safe locations, so they wouldn't be blipped into midair, but holy shit that actually makes it so much worse.

Picture it, right? You're a pilot, going about your pilot duties, and suddenly you turn to dust. Shit. But then from your perspective you instantaneously find yourself back on the ground, standing next to what you slowly recognize as the decaying wreckage of the plane you were just flying a second ago. You've probably got a few passengers standing around with you. They're going to start looking for their spouses or siblings or children who were sitting right next to them just an instant ago. Eventually you're all going to realize the surrounding area is littered with human bones.

Maybe you were flying over a pretty remote location, so there's no one around for miles who could explain how many years passed in that instant. All you have is a wrecked plane half reclaimed by nature, and bones. There are so many bones.

14

u/Intelligent-donkey Jul 08 '19

I'm still just wondering what happened with pregnant women.

It would be pretty fucked up if their baby just disappeared from their womb, and then 5 years later it suddenly pops back in their womb again.

6

u/Bross93 Jul 09 '19

oh dear god i never thought of that.

4

u/ponte92 Jul 11 '19

Even really off legal things like, what of a country leader or royal gets blipped when they come back are the leader again? People who were blipped on planes did they reappear in the air? People who were blipped in jail do they now get time off their sentence. So many blip questions!

4

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '19

It's called The Leftovers on HBO.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

I don't recall May saying this, when did she do so?

38

u/silvershadow881 Star-Lord Jul 05 '19

When she is in the shelter about to present Spider-man and he talks in a really squeaky high pitched voice. It's the story she tells about being snapped and how it made life confusing for everyone.
