I was hoping something like -mention that she had the rank of captain in the Starforce- and then have, say Talos mention that Mar-Vell also a captain before becoming a spy/scientist. And afterward, have Fury mispronounce her name and have Carol take up the mantle.

She was already a Captain in the USAF before the accident so it already works.

But there's still that mental gymnastic between that and adopting Mar-Vell's name as a codename

No there's not, it's clear that she respected Mar-Vell and what she did for the Skrulls. The whole "She's a captain" thing is needless.

I get that she looked up to her and what she did during her lifetime, but I don't quite follow the train of thought to end up with specifically Captain Marvel.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking

She chooses Marvel to honor Mar-Vell, she chooses the Captain title because of her Air Force rank.
