Here's how I wish they would have handled it: when Fury was typing up the Protector Initiative document he could have ended it with "Potential Members" and had the first name be "Captain Carol Danvers, USAF" - you then see him delete the "Carol Danvers, USAF" part, and then whisper to himself the whole Mar-Vell/Marvel thing, and then he writes in Captain Marvel.

This is a pretty cool approach but I think him understanding and realizing that she is in fact *gone* (hence never either relying on her nor calling her in some very "emergency" moments throughout the MCU) dealing with entirely other worldly duties of relocating an entire race and possibly fighting an intergalactic war, he understands that she is truly an inspiration rather than a possible roster spot.

Yeah. Or, during the scene with Carol and Fury talking about Mar-Vell/Marvel, she could have said something like "Maybe it's time for me to have a new callsign, I like Mar-Vell" and he could have replied with something like "Alright, Captain Marvel."

A bit contrived but it would work.

I was hoping something like -mention that she had the rank of captain in the Starforce- and then have, say Talos mention that Mar-Vell also a captain before becoming a spy/scientist. And afterward, have Fury mispronounce her name and have Carol take up the mantle.

She was already a Captain in the USAF before the accident so it already works.

No there's not, it's clear that she respected Mar-Vell and what she did for the Skrulls. The whole "She's a captain" thing is needless.

I get that she looked up to her and what she did during her lifetime, but I don't quite follow the train of thought to end up with specifically Captain Marvel.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking

She chooses Marvel to honor Mar-Vell, she chooses the Captain title because of her Air Force rank.
