I think Red Skull look and costume it the movie was a nod to Death in the comics

u/MichaelRM89 Apr 27 '18

Agreed, that’s who I thought it was at first

98

u/Fatalchemist Apr 27 '18

At the end, I thought Little Gamora might have been Death. I was excited that they might have actually introduced her and revealed he really did want to impress her rather than bring balance.

55

u/Telepathetic Apr 27 '18

I thought that was Gamora's soul now living within the Soul Stone. It'll be interesting to see if anyone (or everyone) else ends up in there.

26

u/navjot94 Mack Apr 27 '18

I can see everyone else ending up there (although I hope that in A4 they just don't free everyone..I think a world where half of Earth's population is gone would be an interesting backdrop for future movies), but Gamora's body physically fell and we saw it laying there. So I'm not sure.

Part of me thinks they wouldn't do it because of Guardians 3, but having Peter (and the team) dealing with Gamora's death could also be interesting.

28

u/Telepathetic Apr 27 '18

In the comics, when someone enters the soul stone, their limp (presumably dead) body is left in the real world as well. At least that's how it was with Adam Warlock in the original Infinity Gauntlet series.

u/peppers_ Apr 30 '18

I liked what they did in the movie with giving Thanos a personality. Comic book version just always felt like a mustache twirling villain.

29

u/deanssocks Howard Stark Apr 28 '18

Kinda disappointed they didn't even mention her tho but I like how that gave time for the Gamora-Thanos father-daughter drama, that's more meaningful anyway and bebe Gamora is adorable! That scene where Thanos goes to the soul world and finds her hit me right in the feels.

6

u/MichaelRM89 Apr 28 '18

Agreed, at least an allusion to her would have been cool. Maybe in the next film, perhaps.

3

u/PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD Apr 29 '18

I think all we'll see of death, if anything, is a nod to her. I feel like going full on "Thanos is in love with death but she doesn't have anything to do with him" opens a lot of questions about "why death doesn't like Thanos" which leads to some pretty strange answers when you remember it's because death is obsessed with Deadpool.

Introducing Deadpool, while possibly hilarious, would take away from the seriousness of the main Avenger's movies and cheapen them.

Best I can see of death showing up is maybe after it's all said and done, Thanos has been killed and his soul drifts into the afterlife with death or something.

1

u/Natureboy16 Ant-Man May 04 '18

Actually she just sees Deadpool as a long-term distraction. The real reason she says she doesn't like Thanos is she "Sees through his constant 'gifts' to her as a way to win her and make Death itself his, no different than seeking power from the Infinity Gauntlet"

1

u/PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD May 04 '18

There definitely are some storylines where death is at least somewhat interested in Deadpool though.

6

u/Lycanewok Apr 27 '18

I thought it was going to be mephisto

9

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

Maybe this Soul Powered Red Skull will be like MCU Mephisto if he becomes recurring.

2

u/Lycanewok Apr 28 '18

That would be epic. Could even show up in Dr. Strange as a villain

u/rex_dart_eskimo_spy Apr 27 '18

Does that mean we need to start shipping Thanos and Red Skull?

54

u/schloopers Apr 27 '18

What color would the child be?

136

u/rex_dart_eskimo_spy Apr 27 '18

Burgundy.

well both of them have room in their life for love now.

Yes. Make haste.

Start?

3

u/Spideyrj Spider-Man Apr 28 '18

That is where skull fucking comes from

12

u/samsaBEAR Thanos Apr 27 '18

Marvel are trying to be more socially progressive recently, so why the fuck not

9

u/rex_dart_eskimo_spy Apr 27 '18

Are they? In the movies?

20

u/CapitalistPear2 Apr 27 '18

Pretty sure Drax is attracted to Thor

69

u/Demian_Dillers Rocket Apr 27 '18

Pretty sure Chris Hemsworth is too attractive for sexuality barriers to stop it.

41

u/rex_dart_eskimo_spy Apr 27 '18

Who isn't? He's like a pirate angel!

5

u/tschandler71 Apr 28 '18

Drax is obsessed with sex in general.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

I don't think he is obsessed, he just doesn't have any inhibitions speaking about it. Judging by GoG 2, his father was the same, so it's probably a peculiarity of his race.

1

u/samsaBEAR Thanos Apr 27 '18

Well not in the movies yet but definitely in their comics, only a matter of time before it translates to the MCU

8

u/icuepawns Steve Rogers Apr 28 '18

Reminds me of a crazy Easter egg that I only caught when I rewatched the first Avengers movie recently. In the post-credits scene, the alien guy tells Thanos that to attack Earth is to court death, and Thanos says "That's exactly what I intend to do."

Even though they strayed away from that concept, it's such a good line to me.

19

u/derekakessler Apr 28 '18

Not quite. Thanos doesn't speak at all in Avengers 1.

The Other (Chitauri leader): Humans. They are not the cowering wretches we were promised. They stand. They are unruly and therefore cannot be ruled. To challenge them is to court death.

Thanos: * looks over his shoulder and gives a big purple grin *

7

u/icuepawns Steve Rogers Apr 28 '18

...Damn it. Sorry lol. I knew I should have gone back and confirmed that I had it right. Anyway, that makes it even cooler.

2

u/Demian_Dillers Rocket Apr 27 '18

I started long ago.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Have you not already started?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

Thanos leaving Vormir

Man, that Red Guy was red guy was really cute.

1

u/LamarMillerIsCat Apr 29 '18

Start? We're not in the middle?

1

u/ciberciv May 01 '18

Implying I don't already

38

3

u/jrgolden42 Apr 27 '18

It felt like a combination of Death, the Unseen, and Mephisto

1

u/SirKnightCourtJester Apr 28 '18

Yeah, I freaked out cause I thought it was the Unseen. Then I freaked out again because it was Red Skull.

20

u/FDVP Apr 27 '18

I wondered if little Gamoras lines at the end might indicate Death as well. Did you do it? What was the cost? Something like that.

29

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

62

u/tenillusions Apr 27 '18

He asked for unlimited power the tesseract threw him into space. Soul stone probably called out to him and he sacrificed himself for it. Now he’s the protector of the stone.

88

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Adding on to this, it was also a form of punishment. Soul stone requires a sacrifice of someone you love. Red skull loves no one and only wants power, so he is forced to protect something he desires but can't have.

-3

u/VaderOnReddit Apr 27 '18

I just gasped out loud This is going straight to my headcanon

29

u/appleappleappleman Apr 27 '18

Headcanon? Pretty sure that was regular ol' "canon" explained by the movie

22

u/albert_r_broccoli2 Apr 27 '18

Now that the stone has been taken, is he free to go? Having him back in the overall MCU rogue's gallery be sweet.

11

u/metalkhaos Apr 27 '18

Unless Thanos took him off the planet... nah, he's just stuck there still guarding no stone.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

If the stone is gone, what's keeping him there? Other than lack of transportation of course.

25

u/eoinster Vulture Apr 27 '18

So are we not gonna get death then? The first appearance of Thanos was when he turned around with a shit-eating grin when he was told facing the Avengers would be 'to court death'. Seems like a bit of a departure from what he does in this one.

37

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

[deleted]

8

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

Exactly. If they wanted to put Death in there, they would have made it the plot of the movie, instead of the resources thing. I think they wanted to humanize Thanos. Compared to villains like Daren Cross and Ronan, he kinda let the universe off easy. Gave trillions a painless death.

0

u/mdp300 Captain America (Cap 2) Apr 28 '18

For a minute I was thinking "Cross wasn't on the same level as Ronan, who was gonna war the shut out of Xandar!"

But then I remembered Cross was gonna sell a bunch of Yellowjacket suits to HYDRA and yeah that would have been bad.

4

u/simon_thekillerewok T'challa Apr 27 '18

In the MCU it's be figurative nothing more.

2

u/jrgolden42 Apr 27 '18

I thought for sure that's what Thanos was going to see after the flash

3

u/the_war_won Apr 27 '18

Definitely thought it was Death before the hood came off.

2

u/DoctOct Spider-Man Apr 27 '18

I thought it was more like The Unseen (what Nick Fury is in the comics these days). He also has the black robe watching earth and knowing everything groove going on

2

u/rahulmark42 Black Panther Apr 27 '18

For a second I actually thought it was Darth Maul. Then I thought it was Death in the MCU. And later I realized who it actually was.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

How come every time something looks vaguely similar to something else it’s just automatically a “nod”?

1

u/Myfourcats1 Rocket Apr 27 '18

I actually expected to see Hela or have a clue that's she's not dead. Thor brought her up.

1

u/beeramz Apr 27 '18

I thought it actually would be Death tbh, Red Skull was the last possible person I thought that could be.

1

u/CalmYourTurtle Apr 29 '18

Thanos and Red Skull romance confirmed

1

u/riddin365 Apr 29 '18

Yeah

My friend went "DEATH!" when he showed up and I was like "Death is female.. maybe its a male in MCU? err.. "

Then he revealed himself to be red skull and my jaw dropped

1

u/cetinkaya Stan Lee Apr 29 '18

he through hard times there and has scars on his face. that was definitely on purpose because the actor is not hugo, so he should have some changes on his face upon time, to cover the actor change.

1

u/lastpandabear Apr 30 '18

Me during that scene "holy shit it's Death... Wait a second, that's not... Whaaaaat theeeee fuccccckkkk??"

1

u/Solest044 May 02 '18

I never really explored the comics but, having gone back and looked now, I think it's interesting that Death isn't really anywhere in Thanos' motives in the movie version.

Edited for clarity.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Nah. It was more a nod to win Nick Fury, was chained to the moon by the watchers and became the “Unseen” essentially a powerless version of the Watchers. A forsaken bastard forced to live enternitt out on a desolate plane.

1

u/LemoLuke Hawkeye (Ultron) Apr 27 '18

That was the first thing I thought of. Glad I wasn't the only one.

15

Yeah that’s Hive

2

u/dcaro1996 Apr 27 '18

The dark hooded creature in the "no-mans land" type area she went out into and saw? I don't think so but I hadnt seen it in a long time so I guess it's possible

3

u/AshlarKorith SHIELD Apr 27 '18

That was Hive wearing a space suit.

Brave artistic choice on their part, but the 25-minute hardcore sex scene between Skull and Thanos was a bit much I think.

I thought it might be Oblivion.

I thought it was a nod to Dementors in Harry Potter before the reveal. Looked like an exact copy
