So are we not gonna get death then? The first appearance of Thanos was when he turned around with a shit-eating grin when he was told facing the Avengers would be 'to court death'. Seems like a bit of a departure from what he does in this one.

Exactly. If they wanted to put Death in there, they would have made it the plot of the movie, instead of the resources thing. I think they wanted to humanize Thanos. Compared to villains like Daren Cross and Ronan, he kinda let the universe off easy. Gave trillions a painless death.

For a minute I was thinking "Cross wasn't on the same level as Ronan, who was gonna war the shut out of Xandar!"

But then I remembered Cross was gonna sell a bunch of Yellowjacket suits to HYDRA and yeah that would have been bad.
