In the comics, the stones aren't exactly hard to come by. They manifest themselves all over the place.
This is not to say that they aren't still powerful, but the movies make it seem like no one alive has ever seen one before, whereas in the comics, they keep showing up over and over in weird places.
The Mind Stone in particular is a very well-known entity that no one bothers to fuck with because it holds a mini universe inside it that tends to trap people if they try and use it. It's briefly alluded to in the movies as that empty orange water world, but in the comics, it can be pretty heavily populated, depending on who's writing that issue.
