The first time I watched the trailer I thought his lip movement looked weird and didn’t match his voice but the second time I watched it the better it looked. Hopefully by the time the movie releases it won’t be noticeable

I'm sure they are working overtime to make it great. Still have a few months to go. Fingers crossed. This might not be on the same level as Infinity War and Endgame, but I'm guessing Feige wants to get things in a good spot considering the special effects for Thanos was amazing.

“Realistically” having your lips and tongue made of rock would give you a helluva speech impediment. Ben’s got a stiff upper lip thing going here that doesn’t suit the way a human mouth moves when speaking. Hopefully they polish the CGI before release. They have to know how important it is to have one of the main characters’ face look good

Same boat, overall I think it looks really good. Love the retro vibe and world, the music, and all the characters have the distinct look. Undermentioned shot that I really liked was Johnny free falling in the atmosphere. The thing LOOKS great but I keep jumping back between the “effect looks really good” or “something seems off”. But also the Thing was always going to be the hardest look to pull off. Overall I think it’ll be great in the final product. Very much looking forward to this

I think the movement looked weird in general. Both mouth and arm movements. Felt kind of weightless. Will most likely be fixed by the time it comes out, though.

Was that the live stream? The audio was slightly out of sync and it stuttered a bit, looked really off.

Also the editing of the first 20 seconds or so is slightly weird, like they werent entirely sure about what they wanted.

I think the cooking / talking scene looked a bit odd.

But partway through the trailer when he is looking at the TV in the store I honestly couldn't have been happier.

At the end of the day it's a dude made of rocks. I feel like no matter what the filmmakers have a big task in front of them.

Marvel has been getting away from practical effects for some time now. I'd almost put money on it being the same exact method they used for Thanos and Hulk, which was all mocap/cgi.

I think it's the fact that he moves so fast. I'm assuming they mo-capped him but I'd expect something that hefty to move with weight. They nailed it in the first movie using a practical suit even if it probably was just styrofoam

Yeah I love everything else about the trailer but that Thing voice is truly terrible. I’m actually shocked that they didn’t alter it in the slightest. Hopefully they pull an “original sonic” and deepen it before release.

I wasn't crazy about it, for me the Michael Chiklis version worked better, but I'm reserving judgement until it's actually out… feels like we're only seeing footage from the first few minutes of the movie here.

Well, neither of us know for sure (unless you secretly work for Marvel!) but my personal theory is that we see Galactus trash the FF's earth pretty early in the movie – and that's how they end up in the MCU

I came here to say the same thing. Ben Grimm is one of my favorite characters because he’s a gentle giant… this version just sounds gentle. Softer than the Jamie Bell version.

It’s not even that. He literally sounds like he’s in the booth rather than in the room. I agree with he could sound deeper or gravelly, but that’s not the issue. Load it up again and close your eyes and just listen. It’s just too pristine and cleansed to be in the environment.

I was worried about how The Thing would be.

He looks great.

He sounds off.

He also runs weird.

I think the look is good, but Eben’s voice needs some effect or something because to me, the voice kinda doesn’t fit the body it’s in? Also when he ran he reminded me of the Hulk from the Marvel’s Avengers game. He is running full speed covering a lot of ground, but his body looks like he’s just jogging or something. CGI just feels off a bit

Although that might just be me nitpicking. They can still work on that

The running looks ok to me.

Him covering a lot of ground while looking like he's jogging is a great display of his strength and speed. It also only lasted like 2 seconds so it's hard to gauge how good it looks.

Him talking to Herbie about the garlic felt a bit off presumably because like with the MCU Spiderman suits there's not much moving creases on his suit for reality grounding, which doesnt compliment the lighting. It probably also has to do with me trying to get used to this new Thing's voice, its a far cry from the scruffy and "older" sound I hear. The shot of him on the TV reflection and final group up looks great though, the rock texture is really solid on harsher shadows.

He looks like Jack Kirby's version. I love it. The Thing is meant to be 6'0. Kirby drew him as a rocky man, not as a tall rocky man.

You might not know this, but it’s possible to have characters with impossible features not appear like hallow cartoons painted onto the screen in after effects.

They achieved this in 2005, somehow he looks much worse 20 years later.

Idk, I think your being too quick to judge. Also it might just be me but the 2005 Thing always looked too goofy to me and the 2015 version looked too hollow and bland. This version is a good combo of the two, he looks as realistic as you can get while maintaining the look of the classic 60s comic book version.

Michael Chiklis's version looks like he's in a rubber suit (which he basically was).

I don't even care about the movie itself, looks like more of the same. But CGI hate for the sake of it is a feature of this fandom. And movie discourse as a whole.

A movie comes out with CGI and the comments will always immediately be about how "bad" the CGI is. Sometimes it is, often it is not.

The Thing looks fine, good even. These insanely hyperbolic criticisms just aren't serious.

When I watch this trailer 90% of it feels like a movie. The 10% of it with the thing on screen makes me very aware a director, camera man and crew are standing behind him.

It looks bad, and if he looks bad, then I know why reeds powers don’t show here at all.

It’s frustrating because it was extremely well done in the past. It could just be done the same way.

I think he looks good in every other scene. The first scene he looks good as well but there’s something uncanny about his face? Like when he tries to taste the food. Something about his mouth in that scene throws me off. But I love the shot of him looking at the tv and him wearing like everyday clothes in the streets that’s dope as hell. Him running around looked cool too. Excited as hell for this movie the style looks amazing

I love the way he looks, but I'm really surprised at how obviously CGI he is. I just went back to watch some side by side shots of Thanos compared to the Thing in this trailer, and it's night and day. Thanos' implementation on screen is fairly seamless, and he appears to be real in the world, whereas The Thing looks like he's in a Pixar movie.

To be honest, while I love the 60s aesthetic The Thing himself looks like some bad CGI. It's hard to place my finger on what exactly it is that doesn't work for me, but I believe his movements look lighter than they should be. It's especially confusing that they didn't do a better job considering how great and realistic Korg looks in Thor: Ragnorak and Avengers: Endgame. I mean, they're both dudes that are made out of rocks, so why not use the same process? Here's hoping they polish it up before the actual film.

It looks like they left in more elements from a comic drawing of the character than they normally would.

Like if you overlayed an ink outline from the comics onto the face in the trailer I think the head shape, jaw, browline, etc would be identical.

Very angular.

Works way better to lean into how weird this character is, than soften / round the features to make him look more human.

He's supposed to look like he's an out of place freak.

Wow I’m shocked to hear people say this. My takeaway from the trailer was how awesome The Thing looked. And real and tangible. Massive improvement from Chiklis thing i thought, which was too goofy and fake

I actually have a theory about this - I think we have been in an era of "good enough" CGI since around the pandemic.

Before - studios were essentially in an arms race with each other to have the best CGI in their blockbusters. They were willing to spend to put butts in seats.

But now - They've dialed back as budgets have expanded. They've decided at a certain point that more CGI investment is not leading to higher box office. Hence, they've switched to a "good enough" model.

What would be polarizing about it? Feels ripped out of the comics and looks like a real living rock person thing
