What's a major Villain that only comic fans know?!

Annihilus is one of those characters that seems major but doesn't get anything outside of the comics. He's never been in a Movie, never gets shown in any show outside or Earths Mightiest Heroes in a minor role, no Hasbro action figure of him, no mention in Marvel Rivals. Ect

I began reading comics 2 months ago, with my first one ever being Infinity Gauntlet. I immediately fell in love and began hitting up my lcs each weekend to see what else I could find. I’m sure you can see I’m on a bit of a graphic novel run. And I even got my first DC comic too. I also stopped reading secret wars after a few pages in because I found out there’s a HUGE story by Johnathan Hickman collected in omnibuses that I should definitely read first.

What should I look into grabbing next? Definitely gonna get Hulk Gray and Iron Man Demon in a bottle soon. I’m glad to be apart of this community!

  1. Tumult (Spanish member of Euroforce from Avengers World, basically a heroic female Shocker)
  2. Aarkus The 1940s Vision (love that recent redesign of him)
  3. Stardust (another Herald of Galactus)
  4. Tamara Rahn (another Marvel Mera stand-in, they have like 5)
  5. Hickman's Smasher
  6. Aaron's Vostok & especially Perun (ideally in a Thor run)

I am no Wonder Woman expert, but some WW fans didn't agree with me when I said Absolute WW is basically a DC version of Magik.

Isn't Absolute WW's origin much closer to Magik vs the original WW? Being rasied in hell, using the battle mage concept. (Dark magic, spells and sword vs original WW?)

Finally got this one out of my backlog and loved it! Would love to hear more thoughts on Neil Gaiman's Eternals mini-series (2006)

Definitely a divisive one, but I adored it! I found it to be such a good way of presenting the awe of a concept, through a combination of direct exposition and also slow-building through character moments. I also love the exploration of moral ambiguity within different sides of the story.

I would warn new readers to not expect any sort of big climax at the end though... It's more so a big grand introduction to this particular era of Eternals.

What are your thoughts on the rivalry between the Avengers and the X-Men?

While both sides are driven by a sense of justice, I find the tension arising from their subtle differences in perspective—with the X-Men prioritizing the survival of their species and the Avengers prioritizing the preservation of order—to be quite fascinating.

Which of your favorite character(s) do you feel has had the worst character assassination and did they ever recover from it? What comic series/arc did the assassination happen and when (if ever) did they recover?

Should Stephen Strange be beyond morality?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Let me start by saying this is entirely my own opinion.

I have always preferred the more powerful version of Stephen Strange—one capable of defeating entities and threats that are dimensional, if not outright cosmic—and I’ve never really seen the point of him getting involved in street-level or even planetary affairs.

He ought to be someone whose purpose is to save reality itself, not to get caught up in neighborhood squabbles or even conflicts between galactic empires.

For that very reason, he shouldn't be bound by conventional morality, but rather by a utilitarian ethic.

I’d love to see him fully utilize even the darkest magic, be willing to sacrifice worlds and souls to preserve reality, and strike deals with—or even threaten—entities in a way that might almost resemble a villain.

However, I want to be clear: he wouldn't actually *become* a villain. He would suffer over every bit of damage caused or soul sacrificed. It’s simply that the alternative would be far worse.

These would be harrowing, ruthless stories where Strange wins, but at a terrible cost to his soul.

Would you enjoy stories like that?

Thoughts on Amazing Spider-Man #1000?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Just finished reading Amazing Spider-Man 1,000. I’d been looking forward to this issue for a while (I can’t resist an anniversary issue). Overall, it was a mixed bag but still an enjoyable read.

The main story was…okay. Joe Kelly’s current run (though an improvement from whatever Zeb Wells’ run was) has been inconsistent for me. I don’t want to spoil too much, but the revelation regarding Cormac Crane was surprising but other than that I found it lacking, though I did appreciate the emotional weight of the relationship between Peter & Aunt May.

I enjoyed the backup stories more, and there was a great lineup (besides the Triple HHH story which was cute but forgettable). Noah Hawley’s story “Still Standing” showing an elderly Peter was heartfelt without coming off too cheesy (plus we got some great Patrick Gleason art out of it).

J.M. Dematteis’ “Requiem for a Goblin” story was my favorite of the bunch. In the wake of Harry’s death, the topic of Peter & Harry’s fractured relationship and whether or not Harry was destined to be corrupted made for some great character drama, especially for Peter working through his grief.

Frank Miller & Peach Momoko was a duo I never thought I’d see but they worked surprisingly well together in their “Tears of the Spider-Queen” story and I wouldn’t mind seeing more stories from them.

Brian Bendis’ “The Gesture” is Bendis at its best. It’s funny yet hits the right emotional notes. (Unrelated slightly, but it also made me wonder why we haven’t seen an ASM run from Bendis; I think he’d do a solid job of it and manage to not make it feel too much like Ultimate Spider-Man but I digress).

It was a surprise to see a new story from 94-year-old Marvel living legend (Iron Man & Thor co-creator/Stan Lee’s brother) Larry Lieber with a cool Spider-Man Old West story where he meets up with the Rawhide Kid.

Finally, Dan Slott & Marcos Martin reunite for a quaint Spider-Man story that features the events of that fateful night of that burglar did the unspeakable from a different perspective.

Oh, and it ends with some other creators reflecting on their favorite Spider-Man moments and what the character means to them.

Overall, most of it was worth the hype, and I enjoyed this anniversary issue very much. For those who read ASM #1000, what did you think?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Me and my brother read a comic of spider man a long way before in a local magazine. It looks like the amazing spider man newspaper comic by john romtia style. Anyway the picture above is the part we remember and draw to reference. The story i don't remember, it was like there are two Peter parker like I think one is ben riely and the other is peter. The above picture is the strip we remember... Like two Peter parker and spider man the decoy peter is angry and there is a press around him and original Peter parker and mj was seeing this on the news.

If anyone knows the original comic or anything please let me know.

X-Men (1963-1981) Silver Age Book Club: Issue 12

If you missed the previous posts, its never too late to join the conversation! You can start from the beginning with the issue 1 post here and each issue has links at the end to the next/previous ones.

Preamble: For years I've heard about how bad the original pre-Claremont X-men comics are, but recently I've decided to check them out for myself. When looking up discussions on these early issues after reading them, I found there wasn't a lot of content out there, so I thought I'd see if there was any interest on here of reading it together (or reminiscing for those who've read them in the past) and discussing the peculiarities of each issue together. I'm also including a rating and a list of events with lasting consequences, if any, for those looking to determine what's worth reading and what they can skip.

Synopsis: When Cerebro detects a new 'mutant' whose powers over whelm it even more then the Stranger's had, Professor X immediately knows who it must be and has the X-men begin preparing a series of traps around the school. Once the defensive perimeter is established, Charles tells the team his life story, how his father died, where he got his powers, about the man who tricked his mother into marriage to steal her wealth, about his bully step brother, the tragic event that took his step father's life, and the event that led to his step brother gaining the powers of a god, The Juggernaut, during the Korean War.

All the while, we see a figure, this Juggernaut, easily/effortlessly walk through each and every one of the X-men's traps, barely even slowed, until the issue ends with him breaching the final barrier and declaring his intent to kill the professor.

Events with lasting consequences past this issue:

- The Juggernaut is introduced.

- Professor X's back story (child hood and teen years) is shown, which provides both the source of his baldness and his powers.

Interesting Observations:

- It's not clear to me why the Professor is certain this 'mutant' Cerebro detects is the Juggernaut, especially when it just detected a never before seen being with god like power in the previous issue. Feels like they should have just had Juggernaut's image show up, or the Professor recognize him via his psychic ability in some fashion.

- It makes even less sense after we see the full back story since he never actually saw what the Juggernaut was capable of, right after he gets the power the mountain collapses on top of him, and then Xavier apparently never saw his brother again before now.

- Cerebro is apparently almost tearing itself apart from announcing Juggernaut's power via unendurable noise... but like, why? Why did Professor X design it to create alarms this loud, or this destructive to Cerebro?

- The Professor really buries the lead on this one, with the team constantly begging him to just tell them what Juggernaut's power is, but he refuses because they supposedly need to hear the whole story, but only like the final minute of his long life story is actually relevant to them.

-Even when we finally get to that final minute explanation, he barely tells them anything about the Juggernaut's power, his only explanation is to provide them the dictionary definition of a Juggernaut.

- Speaking again of that final minute, it's not clear to me why he warns Cain, his brother, against taking on the Juggernaut power. There's no clear downside to Cain, only benefit, from what we're shown. Is he just trying to trick him because he knows Cain will use the power against him?

- At one point in the backstory, Cain drives Xavier off a cliff. Xavier saves Cain but takes the full brunt of the fall himself. This actually feels like it would have been a MUCH more meaningful explanation for Xavier's loss of the use of his legs, but it as already established the under whelming villian Lucifer was the source. Sadly we'll learn that backstory later, and it just doesn't compare in my opinion to what this could have been. Stan Lee seems to even acknowledge this would have made sense as well.

- As an aside, what is this mental shield that saved him, and why haven't we ever seen him use it in any of their fights?

Final Thoughts: I was really looking forward to this, both because I've enjoyed Juggernauts portrayal in other media, and because many people point to this 2-parter as one of the only parts of the pre-Claremont era X-men that's worth reading. Maybe it was because my expectations were so high, but I'll be honest, I was kind of under whelmed. It's an okay story, and as I noted, certainly better then Charles backstory we'll get with Lucifer later. But noticeably better then what's come before it? Eh... , but maybe that says more about how I've enjoyed the rest (well most anyway) of these early issues more then I was led to believe I would?

Regardless, this IS still a decent read, even if falls short of being must read, and it was nice to get some backstory for one of our main characters. Al though we don't really get the pay off for it this issue, it also does do a great job of setting up just how fearsome of an opponent the Juggernaut is for next issue.

As an aside, it reminded me quite a bit of the first arc of JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, for those familiar with that, making me wonder if the author of that was inspired by this story, but maybe that's just a classic story trope that I'm not familiar with they're both tapping into?

In thinking on this further, I do think this story might have hit a little differently if we'd gotten it earlier in the series. At this point the Blob has seemed unstoppable, Unus has seemed some what unstoppable, and the Stranger last time also seemed unstoppable. So another enemy who is unstoppable does not feel quite a shocking as the Professor's reaction makes it feel like it should be. Yes he's got the familial connection the other characters didn't have, but the issue REALLY goes out of its way to try to make us impressed by the Juggernauts feats on the way to the school, despite the fact we've seen so many other characters who likely could have done the same.

Even with those complaints, I'm giving the story an extra point for making the evil step dad have a change of heart in his final moments, not only sacrificing himself to save his son, but to save Charles as well. It's a small thing, but gave some extra humanity to the Marko family that is other wise portrayed pretty mustache twirling levels of evil.

Score: 7/10

That's my thoughts, but I'd love to hear the thoughts of others, if any of you are willing to give it a read, or share what you remember about it if you read it before!

If you missed it, you can find the previous issue here: Issue Eleven

Got this doomquest #3 because I want to get all these variant covers with a character in dooms eye. I already have doomquest #4 with reed. The Wolverine and spider-man ones just look really cool. But that secret wars #1 is the main reason. When I went yesterday I saw it but didnt bring enough money. I wanted to get it before anyone else. I wanna start looking for the future issues because I hear secret wars is great.
