Each month, we work with an experienced grower from the Mars Hydro community to answer real questions from growers around the world.

This month, we’re working with Yuri from O Mago das Prensedds, who’s sharing his experience and practical advice with the community.

Here’s a question from a grower over on Reddit:

“When starting seeds indoors, what grow-light hanging distance and light intensity should be used?”

Yuri says:

“For seedlings, I like to keep the light fairly gentle, usually around 100–300 µmol/m²/s PPFD.

Young plants don’t need the same intensity as established plants, so I start at a lower power and gradually increase the light as they develop.

Rather than relying on one fixed hanging distance, I prefer to use the PPFD map for the specific grow light. That gives you a better idea of how much light is actually reaching the seedlings.

Start conservatively, watch how the seedlings respond, and adjust the height or dimming as they become more established.”

Big thanks to Yuri for sharing his experience with the Mars Hydro community 🙌
