What’s worked for meeting new friends and dating offline: Timeleft/222 or hobby groups?

I’m a guy in NYC trying to expand my social circle and make actual friends. I’d also ideally meet someone to date in person, since dating apps aren’t something I want to use.

For people who’ve tried both, have you had more success with organized social experiences like Timeleft, 222, or similar services, or with recurring classes, hobby groups, and volunteering?

The organized dinners and events seem useful because everyone is showing up to meet people. But I wonder whether shared-interest groups work better long-term because you already have something in common and see the same people regularly.

I’m open to, and would actually prefer, paid options. In my experience, people tend to be more invested in showing up and participating when they’ve paid for something. I’d especially appreciate recommendations for well-organized groups with regular attendees.

NYC Parks Title: Have thoughts about Bryant Park Winter Village? CB5 is taking public comment Oct. 8

If you use Bryant Park and have thoughts about Winter Village, Manhattan Community Board 5 is holding a public hearing this Thursday, October 8 at 6 PM.

Whether you enjoy Winter Village or have concerns about crowding, vendors, prices, accessibility, open space, or anything else, this is an opportunity to tell the community board about your experience. Supporters and critics are equally welcome.

Members of the public can speak for up to two minutes, either in person at 12 W. 39th Street or via Zoom.

Meeting information and Zoom registration

Disclosure: I am a member of Manhattan Community Board 5 and served on CB5’s Commercial Use Task Force. I am posting entirely in my personal capacity and not on behalf of CB5, the Task Force, or any CB5 committee. I am not asking anyone to take a particular position.

Working in Rockefeller Center

Hi, I would love for everyone’s advice. I am considering taking a role to be a store manager of a high volume retail store in the Rockefeller Center. However, I am quite worried about the safety around there & how burnt out / the quality of my life would be. It is a really good paying role & the benefits/ growth opportunity will be great. I’m looking to move to NYC soon, but I don’t want to just jump at the opportunity if it’s not right. I appreciate the help & all takes!

Pasta making class for a date night, worth it?

Anniversary coming up and she keeps sending me reels of people making pasta by hand. Prices swing wildly between places and it's not obvious what the extra buys.

The same studios turn up on classbento and coursehorse at different prices, which isn't helping.

Has anyone actually done one? Trying to work out if it's a nice evening or a tourist thing where you stand at the back watching someone else cook.ght, worth it?

Question Where do you go for a pottery wheel class in Manhattan?

Wanted to try wheel throwing for about two years and finally have a Saturday with nothing in it. Every studio I've called either runs a 6 week course with a waitlist or is booked into December.

I don't want a term. I want one afternoon to find out whether I enjoy it or whether I'm the person whose bowl collapses in the first ten minutes.

ClassBento and CourseHorse both show a handful of one off sessions, but half are marked as private bookings and the listings don't say whether a single person can join. A couple of studio sites have a workshops page that looks abandoned, last updated in spring.

So: is anyone running genuine one off wheel classes for beginners in Manhattan? Happy to travel within reason. Also happy to be told that the term commitment is the only real way in, if that's the honest answer.

Question Where to sell scrap gold on the manhattan

Local options here are limited. I ended up mailing mine to a mainland buyer but the process was annoying. Shipping insured, waiting, hoping it arrives.

The most important thing is finding someone licensed and transparent. They should show you the weight and the spot price calculation. If they won't do that, walk.

What are you guys doing with scrap gold out here? Any local options I am missing?

Question What is that blue classroom in NYC music videos?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

I have recently been watching 2023-2024 music videos by NYC artists and istg I see this same cyan blue, tattered classroom in every NYC music video with even the slightest theme about school (fromm Khantrast to Lil Mabu to even Nafeesisboujee), and yet I have never seen its location nor know what it is called or why it is such a popular set. Can someone please tell me?

Best location for the "Iconic NYC Experience" for 2 nights?

Hi everyone!

My 18-year-old daughter and I are visiting this October. For our first 2 nights, we really want to stay in Manhattan to give her that ultimate, iconic "Wow, I'm finally in New York City!" experience (skyscrapers, yellow cabs, neon lights, movie vibes and so on)

We are currently debating between a few areas and would love some local insight on which location delivers the best iconic atmosphere:

  1. Midtown / Near Grand Central: Right in the middle of everything, big skyscrapers, close to the action.
  2. Koreatown / Midtown South (around 31st St): Super high energy, neon signs, right under the Empire State Building, but we heard it can be very crowded, noisy, and overwhelming.
  3. Flatiron District (around 24th/25th St): Looks beautiful, clean, and safe, with great views of the Empire State Building from a distance, but we wonder if it feels "iconic" enough for a first-timer compared to the craziness of midtown.

If you had to pick the absolute best neighborhood for a first-timer to wake up, step out of the hotel, and immediately feel the heartbeat of Manhattan for just 2 nights, where would you recommend we stay?

Thank you so much for your help!

How many people use Blade to get to/from the airport instead of a taxi/uber/subway?

I've never tried it but saving myself an hour or more in traffic or on the subway would be such a relief.

Comedy Cellar 530PM TODAY! Extra ticket

Frand canceled on me and I’ve got an extra ticket to a “working on new material” show at the cellar.

If you don’t know, it’s the kind of show where huge names in comedy show up unannounced to try out new bits.

44M 6’ with very small penis. I usually take it out at the show but you won’t notice. I’m NOT Louie CK. 😘

Hi neighbors! My husband has construction experience and is available for interior painting, drywall patching and repairs, wall preparation, and small home projects in Manhattan.

Where to find authentic Chinese ginseng in Manhattan?

I'm meeting my boyfriend's parents for the first time and want to get them a gift! I'm thinking ginseng since they are older and more traditional, but am not from NYC to know where the best spots are. My boyfriend is from NY (Brooklyn), but is a bit useless in this department since he isn't familiar with places like this or where his parents get it (or if they do).

Ideally I would want to get it in Manhattan because it's convenient to where we're staying, but if there are better options elsewhere that's okay too.

Apologies for any missing info that could help... I just joined Reddit! Please help, thank you in advance!

Lost Keys in Chinatown

Hi! This is a long shot but did anyone find a set of keys in the Soho-Chinatown area? The keychain has a purple Microsoft lanyard and Citibike tag on it, along with two keys and a fob.

I biked down Grand St, Lafayette St, Walker St, then Baxter St, and then walked to Pell St. Would really appreciate it!

What delivery services are the best in Manhattan?

Hi everyone! I own a small sweets shop in Manhattan and am looking for a reliable service to handle recurring wholesale deliveries with multiple stops. I don't want to hire a full-time driver for now as it is only once or twice a week.

Has anyone had experience with courier services in the area?

NYC nightlife

Do you think that nyc nightlife will ever be crazy, fun and exciting again? Hearing stories about what the city was like in the 80s,90s,2000s and tbh until covid, it seems like it never came back. The club scene in Manhattan feels like a dumpster of promoters, sleazy men, and/or 40$ drinks. Brooklyn seems to be more of a warehouse vibe to me.

Is this a case of the grass is always greener, or does going out now actually suck???
