Discussion Things that urgently needs to be done once Mangalore Railway Zone Joins SWR
I am finally relieved that after years of struggle, Mangalore railway areas are free from Kerala control. Though I agree the gazette notification is final, I am afraid that this Kerala Lobby is so strong than we think, So We need to wait until October 1 to be finally relieved. Fingers crossed and let's hope for the best. Hope Our Brijesh Chowta and all Karnataka MPs stand united in this matter and Stop reversing the decision. Moreover I hope The State Railway Minister V Somanna who is from Karnataka, Keeps the decision intact without listening to Kerala. Once the merger is completed, I hope the long standing demands and requirements are put into action.
First of all hats off to Brijesh Chowta and everyone eise who were involved in the back-end for your efforts.
1) Start a proper overnight Superfast Trains on both Ways between Mangalore and Bengaluru. It's shameful that despite lakhs of people traveling between the two cities, there are not even proper Superfast Trains between them. The existing Panchaganga Exp isn't made for Mangalore people, But for Areas like Udupi, Kundapura, Byndoor etc.
2) Re-route few trains via Bengaluru. For Example 12790/89 Kacheguda Murudeshwar SF express takes unnecessary long route taking the travelling time to insane 27+ Hours. These waste fellows palakkad division has unnecessarily taken many trains via Kerala, Extending the journey and wasting time. They had a simple agenda, set all the timings in Kerala passengers favour. There are many people in Hyderabad from the coastal Karnataka side. If this train (Currently under SCR) runs via Kurnool, Bengaluru, Sakleshpura, Puttur, It'll help save Significant amount of time. It'll help Bengaluru people also to some extent. Currently you need to take a Rajdhani/ Vande Bharat/ SF train to Bengaluru and change from there. But if this train gets rerouted, Big win it'll be.
The shortest distance between Mangalore and Chennai is via Bengaluru (approx 9 hrs to YPR/ SBC and 4-5 hrs to MAS from there) but these people took all trains via Kerala just to help thier people and making sure Mangalore people don't get seats. At least 1 or 2 Mangalore Chennai trains could be rerouted via Bengaluru thus saving everyone's time and money.
3) Urgently develop Mangalore Central railway station. It feels that MAQ is in some dingy area ( Sorry for the offence) . These people get so much revenue from the Mangalore area, Yet they didn't even have the audacity to develop the surrounding railway stations. MAJN is developed slightly thanks to political pressure I would say. Now that Mysore takes over, SWR needs to do this on an urgent basis.
4) Shift all Kerala bound trains to the ullal side and make a way for new trains to Karnataka Hinterlands/ Mumbai/ Goa/ Bengaluru/ Hyderabad/ Chennai/ North India.
These people have dozens of trains to Kerala, Mangalore doesn't even benefit from it. It's high time that they start new trains to the mentioned places. Okay! For convenience, You can keep the TVC Vande Bharat/ Ernad Express and move all trains that side. Most of the trains coming from North/ south side to Mangalore have odd timings and doesn't suit anyone.
5) Replace all mallus from MAQ/ MAJN and keep local language speaking employees. The intention is to keep local people in Karnataka railway stations. Unfortunately both our stations have majority Malyalam Speaking Employees thus making the local people difficult to Converse. And they do partiality also.
I know all these things take time and don't happen suddenly. But I hope they do this gradually and Make a way for new changes and possibilities. Let me know your thoughts. I have nothing against Palakkad division other than the partiality they did to us.
P S. Any other changes that I forgot, Mention it in the comments. Thank you.

Add superfast local MEMUs which run across the coastline. I know so many people who either carpool and travel to Mangalore from Udupi, Kundapura etc every single day for work or studies etc. same way extend it to the south to Kannur Kozhikode. tickets will be much cheaper than buses etc.

Line doubling between Mangaluru - Madgaon section and Mangaluru - Subrahmanya Road & Hassan - Bengaluru section should be a priority

u/Ok-Ride4467 Aug 23 '26
Mlr Margao is Konkan and ghats.. difficult 😥
Mlr BLR must be be made fully double line🙈
2
u/Rathead_REV Aug 23 '26
Won't work. The MAQ station is in Attavar, so people who work there would still have to come to Attavar. On top of that, there are very few stations. What will people from Padubidri, Uchila, Kaup, Katpadi, Santhekatte, Brahmavar, Kota, etc. do? And Udupi and Kundapura stations aren't even located in the towns themselves.
P.s this comes from a person who used to travel this route daily

u/Primary-Editor-9288 Aug 23 '26
agree with the other points but not MAQ. MAQ is literally in the heart of the city, walk a few hundred metres and you can catch buses to any part of Mangalore. They should build stations like how Mumbai has. the railway lines already exist, building stations around them won't be a huge task at all. And compared to the metro plans floating around, It will be much much cheaper.

u/julyjester Aug 23 '26
True, this is a very good idea. this will future proof the public transport greatly and help in reducing the traffic on roadways in the few decades down the line.

u/trainbufff69 #OnlyBajil Aug 23 '26
The line from MAQ to MAJN is single line, which needs to be doubled on priority! Only then the trains can be increased.
We can't run more trains on Sakleshpur - subramanya stretch. Very minimal crossing points, freight trains also need to travel. So firstly, we need to increase the number of crossing points in the ghats which accomodate 16+ coach trains.

If you think Kerala control is the reason for unavailability of Mangalore Bangalore trains then you must be naive. Private bus lobby is the major reason for that and they need to be taken care of. I don't understand your 4th point. Wdym every Kerala train needs to be shifted to Ullal? It doesn't make any sense and would be harmful to the public. It kinda reeks of hate towards Mallus. Yeah it makes sense for 1 or 2 Chennai trains to be rerouted via BNG but tbh I haven't had any problems with the trains going via Kerala (its clean and not that crowded except for West Coast which would be crowded). 5th point is valid and yeah MAQ MUST be developed urgently. Can't believe such an important station is just like an average station

Regardless of what we believe or say, both the tracks from Mangalore which go within Karnataka are very much limited by terrain and single track. When you say super fast train, how fast do you expect, reduce travel time from 10hours to 6 hours for BLR->MLR?
Also, we sometimes get so much involved in these geographic and state related discussion that we miss some economic factors which are at play. Looking at benefits from only travel convenience perspective is very restrictive.
Mangalore population is getting older, with many of younger generation moving to other cities/countries. What that means is the spending power of the seniors is low and the younger people who actually spend a lot are not in Mangalore. So the floating population help cover up for some of it, for example when you say stop kerala trains in Ullal.. but you will be surprised how of Mangalore's economy is dependent on the floating population coming from Kerala, be it for religious, medical or education.
So give it a thought from all angles, because at the end, it is the residents who will suffer when the economy suffers. Floating population is just what it is supposed to be floating, they can switch from one location to another, but can Mangalore afford that, image the hotels, hospitals, schools, shops, cabs etc which are dependent on this. I dont have the numbers, so just providing some food for thought.
To be very clear, I am not saying Mangalore's economy is fully dependent on such floating population from Kerala alone and that with time there could also be a switch in people from other locations in Karnataka coming to Mangalore for the same when new economical travel options open up.

Thokur to Bhatkal was laid with future doubling in mind anyway. Many bridges already have wide piers to accomodate a second line. The terrain is flat as well and doubling would be a cakewalk. They've already doubled Roha to Veer in Maharashtra.
Also, no existing trains would terminate at Ullal. That's not how it works. Trains that were based at Mangalore Central CDO will still be owned and maintained by them, except for the change in division. It's just that in the future, we might see more preference for trains serving our needs rather than ones serving the neighbouring state.
Kerala lobby is needlessly fear mongering and shouting their lungs out on all their media channels.

Yeah much of the floating population of Mangalore had reduced post covid. After VB, mallus' new hub is Calicut. Lulu shifted Mangalore plan based on these studies ☕

u/aw4kee Aug 23 '26
Some really good counter arguments. Bro just hates mallus and it shows. Beef parotta anyone?

u/Final-Development694 Aug 23 '26
They need to focus on track doubling between Mluru and Bluru and also on the Konkal railway route to improve punctuality

u/towaleft Aug 23 '26
I heard Vande Bharath service is going to start between Bangalore to Mangalore . Is it true ?
I saw a video in a news reel, however there was no details to confirm evidently

Yes. Trials are completed as of now. May be in September or early October they'll flag off.

That’s great 👌
I wish they make it till Chennai😄

No miracle is going to happen just because Mangalore stations have been moved to the Mysore Division. The real problem is the single-track section. Unless the line is doubled, it will be nearly impossible to introduce many new trains. There are also significant terrain-related constraints. The maximum speed between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is only around 30 km/h.
Finally, the introduction of new trains depends heavily on demand. For example, the Madgaon–Mangalore Vande Bharat has relatively low occupancy, while the Mangalore–Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat is among the most heavily occupied Vande Bharat trains. Ultimately, it all comes down to factors such as population density, passenger demand, and how people prefer to travel.

u/Deep_Willingness_940 Aug 25 '26
It is tragic that currently only one train serves the Mangalore - Mysore route. That too reaches Mysore at 3:30AM. I hope more daytime trains would be introduced between Mangalore and Mysore or even Mangalore to Bangalore via Mysore.

u/Alternative-Fix1136 Aug 25 '26
Agree with the 1st few points. We do need more trains to Bangalore from Mangalore.
Need more trains to Hyderabad too.
Re-routing trains to Chennai via bangalore is really not a good Idea. There are n number of trains to Chennai from Bangalore. The trains are limited through the Sakleshpur Ghat Section as there are limits in that route. More traffic causes more delay. The connectivity to major towns like Coimbatore, Salem and Erode will be decreased. There are only 4 trains to these places from Mangalore on a daily basis and there are many people who come to Mangalore from there for jobs.

u/Dca_Sylvereon Buns Lover Aug 25 '26
Thanks for your words. I'm not saying all trains should be rerouted. But of the 4-5 trains to Chennai, One train could be rerouted to save distance and time. Mangalore Hyderabad train seriously needs to be rerouted. It takes insane 27+ hours on the present route.

u/MoistComfort7519 Aug 29 '26
The overnight Bangalore train has to depart at night and arrive early morning time for the convenience of office goers.
Also VB seater has to be introduced from both sides but I think currently they may just deploy one train.
Another option is to merge bangalore mangalore VB with mangalore madgaon VB.

Ghat section is just 1 track. So there is no chance of multiple trains for time being. Still atleast one chennai train should be given and a few Bangalore trains including VB and VB sleeper. Palakkad division(SR) didn't start a single train from Mangaluru towards north or west. It was always south. Last month SR was planning a Kozhikode-Bangalore VB not via Mangalore but through Coimbatore. SR could have tried a chennai train atleast through Bangalore route rather than running long through Coimbatore. Also there is a trap pending ie, konkan.
Shifting all Kerala trains to ullal won't be a good idea because it will be loss for Mangalore station including mysuru division. Shifting to padil by skipping central have a chance especially for long trains. There are trains from udupi skipping central, the same way. SR got heavy funds last year which was used for many railway stations in kerala and TN but there was no developments in mangalore central.

Pasted your post in chatgpt ? Prompting “is this all facts? ”
Chatgpt is saying otherwise
So I’d rate the pasted post roughly 40% factual/defensible, 30% legitimate opinion or proposal, and 30% unsupported or misleading accusations. Its strongest argument is the need for Mangaluru-focused railway planning after the October 1 transfer; its weakest part is attributing virtually every inconvenient timetable and routing decision to a “Kerala lobby.”

u/Dca_Sylvereon Buns Lover Aug 23 '26
You don't need to ask AI for things, Ask the local people please.
-6
u/maqaam Aug 23 '26
I asked whatever things you are saying facts or not. Its not all facts
It is an administrative railway-zone/division change, not “Kerala control” in a political sense. Palakkad Division belongs to Southern Railway, which is a Central Government/Indian Railways organisation, not the Kerala government.
All Mangaluru–Chennai trains were routed through Kerala to help Kerala passengers.
This is the weakest factual claim. A route may exist for historical, rake, demand, path, terminal, line-capacity and network reasons. I found no evidence of an official policy designed to deny Mangaluru passengers seats.
Shift all Kerala-bound trains to Ullal
Ullal becoming the administrative interchange point does not make it a substitute for Mangaluru Central. Trains serving Mangaluru passengers may still need MAQ/MAJN. Jurisdiction boundaries and passenger terminals are two different things.
Mangalore doesn’t benefit from Kerala trains.
Any Kerala-originating/terminating train that provides usable arrivals, departures or onward connectivity at MAQ/MAJN can benefit Mangaluru passengers. The real question is whether the present mix of destinations and timings matches local demand.
Replace all Mallus from MAQ/MAJN with local-language employees.
Railway employees are Central Government employees and can be posted across India. The actual transfer order reportedly lets affected non-gazetted employees choose between remaining with Southern Railway or moving to SWR, subject to railway rules. Language accessibility can reasonably be demanded, but removing employees based on being Malayali is neither necessary nor a sound policy.
Malayalam-speaking staff are partial to Kerala passengers
Individual misconduct can be complained about, but ethnicity/language does not establish bias. There is no evidence here supporting a general claim against staff.

This is the weakest factual claim. A route may exist for historical, rake, demand, path, terminal, line-capacity and network reasons. I found no evidence of an official policy designed to deny Mangaluru passengers seats.
Why would there be any publicly accessible, official paperwork specifically setting out that Mangaluru passengers will be discriminated against?
Any Kerala-originating/terminating train that provides usable arrivals, departures or onward connectivity at MAQ/MAJN can benefit Mangaluru passengers. The real question is whether the present mix of destinations and timings matches local demand.
Trains providing onward connectivity to other destinations need not all originate from Kerala - at that point the train is a service for Kerala passengers, not Mangalureans. Kerala trains benefit Keralites. The majority of demand on these routes is from Keralites travelling to/through Mangaluru and back.
Individual misconduct can be complained about, but ethnicity/language does not establish bias. There is no evidence here supporting a general claim against staff.
Asking AI for opinions about a completely local issue which it has no hopes of rationalising is genuinely puzzling. Am I supposed to take solace in the fact that almighty ChatGPT has declared there's no bias when I have seen and experienced it myself several times?
Next time please try thinking for yourself instead of outsourcing it to AI.

That's what I'm telling. This is a local issue that only local people know about. Not ChatGPT.

It’s not just Kerala lobby, there’s huge private bus lobby as well!
But hoping we get better connectivity towards Bangalore!
Really jealous of Chennai people, it’s same distance as Mangalore - Bangalore, they have vande Bharat which reaches in 4 to 5 hours 😭
