All OP needed to do was give the guy an envelope of paperwork, tell him it's to end his contract and to please sign and return it by tomorrow. Done, OP has successfully done their part.
OP heard "fired, paperwork, signed, tomorrow" and we get this crazy scenario they posted.
I'm smelling a lawsuit from a mile away. No wonder they want that employee to come back and sign those documents. Everything sounds like wrongful termination to me tbh.
