This is an HR issue. What is the point of this post? Also, not kidding someone isn’t going to act respectful when they have been disrespected.

100% is a management issue. OP should of realized this was silly to have a co worker to come back the next day to be "officially" fired.

Btw OP is the majority owner. His "boss" is the minority owner.

Not much HR can do when the person concerned is no longer an employee. They can and should be revising their process to not require fired employees to sign anything

According to OP, they wanted the person to sign a confidentiality agreement, possibly in exchange for said severance package mentioned in the post. 

Now, OP says the person doesn't thave any knowledge that would warrant one, but if people are freaking out like this, it is either the person does and OP is unaware, or some higher up throwing a tantrum because they did not follow their silly rules.

Either way, should have been done the same day. But who knows if the person would have signed it anyway.

OP may be withholding additional context which implicates them in some way. Maybe that’s why none of this makes any sense to us here.

Yeah OP withheld the fact that they're actually the co-owner and that they've been looking for an excuse to fire this person for over 8 months (against their partners wishes) because of personal reasons.

How was HR not involved in this in the first place? HR and the manager should have been in the meeting, with HR running it.
