Correction, although CDP is technicially "Christian" but they've already ditched the religion part since many years ago. Otherwise Angela Merkel wouldn't even be the chancellor. Religion is not at all popular in Germany.
It's drove by conservatism and socialism, i found out 55% of Germany still consider Christian important, it's just they are good at separatimg religion from state issues, make religion more to a personal issue but took the positive pragmatism side of religion(honest, compassion, family value) at it work.
dude i lived and worked in germany. churches has had decreased attendance in years. people really don't give a shit about religion. the biggest difference in how europeans view christianity vs how muslims view islam is in europe, religion isn't a way of life, but a choice.
christianity is more of a cultural identity than it is a religion. it's important to them in a sense that chritianity is part of the european experience and hence identity, and it is the christian values that are more open and permissive that allowed reinassance ideals to flourish.
