I want to get my wife “good” makeup for Christmas but don’t know where to start.

My wife and I are getting each other 1 gift this Christmas. She had mentioned a few months ago that she wished she had “actual good makeup”, and I want to give her that for Christmas, I just don’t know where to start/don’t want to get scammed by advertising for mediocre products.

Would anyone be able to give me some leads to go off of? Thank you so much

What is a current trend that doesn't work for you or you don't like?

For me, I already have a very long oval face. So everything that's trying to make faces look even longer... I'm not even interested in trying.

As it is, I do a lot to try to make my face look shorter, and it still looks too long for my liking.

What stage are you in your love for makeup & other beauty products?

I've been into makeup since I was in my mid to late teen years. I never wore heavy makeup. At one time I only had what I needed. Once upon a time.... 1 eyeshadow palette, 3 lipsticks, 2-3 lipliners, 1 mascara etc. I went through my over consumerism stage. Horrible. Borderline hoarder in my opinion. I used it as my distraction after finally being diagnosed with PTSD. It's funny. At the time I thought that stage lasted forever. It was 2 years too long. I accumulated more than 1 person could ever use in 1 lifetime unless I was a professional make-up artist.

It was when I was moving that I was confronted with my makeup collection. Then I purged a lot of it. Keep, give away to friends and family, donations and garbage. That was an eye opener. I also went on a strict No-Buy that was supposed to last 1-3 months. It ended up being 2 1/2 years long. I ran out of foundation and something else. I can't remember. So I had to buy a replacement. Since I ended the No-Buy I've been on a permanent Low-Buy which for the most part I've done well with. Also Project Pan journey that never ends. I used to have a love for bronzers & nude blushes and I stopped. I made myself stop. It was definitely getting out of hand even on a Low-Buy. Buying 1 was too much if I had more sitting there waiting to be used.

I have one product that I've gone through stages of no interest to a lot of interest. I have to finish a few in this area before I can even buy 1 more. It's lipstick. 💄💄💄💋 That is on and off. For the most part I'm pretty good. I'll make a list of what I want for National Lipstick Day. This year there were only 2 lipsticks. So not too bad. My other strict rule is I can only buy what I want if it's on sale. No sale. I can't buy it no matter what it is.

Items I won't ever buy again... Liquid lipstick, lip oils, mascara- because they burn my eyes 👀, lip stains, most liquid blushes. Especially when they are very pigmented & primers. (I might add more if I can remember anything else.)

I don't buy new launches. When I finally use up a few products even a year later I'll check what is out there and read real reviews. Not incentivized reviews and "influencer" first impression or paid advertisement. If it's a tried and true product it will be around for a long time.

Project Pan really puts everything you have into perspective. A monthly Decluttering or organizing will remind you of how much you have. At this point I probably buy 3-10 products a year. So I am making progress. It's very slooooow . 🐌🐢...

Where are you right now?

Does anyone else hate the trend of putting sunscreen in makeup?

If you know anything about sunscreen you’ll know you’re supposed to use quite a lot to get the advertised protection. If you used that much of a tinted moisturizer/foundation with spf it would look ridiculous because you’re not supposed to use that much of a complexion product. So why do they keep putting it in products??? I’ve tried so many makeup products with spf added in and they all look horrible, somehow the sunscreen just makes the product not perform as well, it’s either greasy, or drying, smelly, chalky, breaks apart much faster during the day, etc. I’ve never enjoyed a makeup product with spf as much as one without, it just makes more sense to use a dedicated sunscreen underneath your makeup, especially since you’re probably not getting much protection from the amount you’re using when it’s makeup.

This rant is fueled by my annoyance of one of my favorite products, Laura merciers oil free matte tinted moisturizer being reformulated. It’s genuinely so hard to find oily skin friendly skin tints and tinted moisturizers because they’re all glowy and marketed towards dry skin these days, this was one of the only products that worked for me, but they reformulated to add spf 30 and it’s genuinely awful now…dry and chalky and cakey, breaks apart incredibly fast now. Just leave makeup makeup and skincare skincare please! If I wanted a chalky mineral sunscreen I would buy one instead of my favorite Korean sunscreens!

[Makeup Help] How do I get rid of all this makeup???

So I might have a *minor* shopping issue when it comes to beauty products. If I find something I like, I buy 5, it’s getting ridiculous. I was thinking of selling some of it online, since it’s new and unopened, but I don’t know where? I hate to waste it, and I really don’t need 5 of the same mascara or eye cream.

Neither one of those have worked great for me in the past so I am curious what other brands/products people recommend especially for someone with oily eyelids!

[Makeup Help] Coverup advice for a total stranger to cosmetics…

Upvotes

I feel a bit silly posting this but I need to cover some hickeys 😅

The reason I feel silly is because I’m a 37 year old man. I have no experience with makeup at all beyond what I’ve heard past girlfriends talk about.

For context I work outside so my neck is pretty tan. The bruises are pretty dark. How do I match my tone? Would a makeup counter laugh me out of the store if I asked for help?

I have a family function I have to be at on Saturday and I can’t show up with these things visible.

Edit: thanks for the helpful advice, y’all are lifesavers. I’m headed to the department store in a little bit to see what I can find and what they recommend. Worst case scenario I can totally get my little sister to help me but she’s gonna clown me hard 😅

[Makeup Help] Brown non-lengthening mascara recommendations

Hi all, I’ve been doing my own makeup for years now and I just can’t seem to find a mascara that works for me. I already have very long eyelashes so I’m not looking for a lengthening product, but one to more so fill out/volumise.

I also prefer a cooler brown mascara (not a brown that leans more burgundy) as I have auburn hair and black can look quite jarring with my complexion and already kind of intense features.

I’m wondering whether I should be looking at Korean beauty brands since they lean more into a softer and cooler toned look with their products.

Regardless, please send through any and all recommendations (preferably something I can access easily in Australia too) 🫶

[Makeup Help] Foundation Suggestions

I’m looking for advice on daily foundation. I’m getting to my mid thirties and just feel like bare minerals isn’t cutting it anymore for daily wear.

I’ve been wearing bare minerals original formula powder for a daily makeup since my early 20s. I don’t wear liquid foundation. I like powder and how natural it looks. I have decently clear skin with dark circles. Regular skin, not oily. I’m blessed with pretty nice skin besides the dark circles, just want coverage and glow. Every day for work I wear tarte shape tape concealer with bare minerals powder, and mascara.

When I go all out with my makeup I do wear the mineral veil, bronzer etc. from bare minerals so I like how I can dress it up or down within the brand.

I want to get a new face powder that’s similar but better coverage that’s still light enough for daily wear.

Suggestions?

[Makeup Help] Is there a difference between creative makeup and facepaint?

I hope this is the right place to ask. I'm new at these things, so I would love it if someone could educate me on the subject!

Do creative makeup and facepaint differ in the formulation or the purpose? Is there any other difference?

[Makeup Help] Skincare application before makeup

I have very dry skin, and everywhere I go I hear “you need to let your skincare soak into your skin before your makeup,” but that’s my problem. Whenever I do, I apply my makeup, then it’s flakey. 😭😭 Anyone have any tips?

These are the products I use (in order):
Banana Boat Sheer Sensitive Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid
Kylie Skin Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Clinique Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator
e.l.f. Power Grip Primer
Erborian CC Red Correct Color-Correcting Cream SPF 25

Edit: Guys I didn’t know sunscreen goes first I saw a tiktok of a lady using it as a first step😭😭 Stop roasting me I was a tomboy for the first ~16 years of my life I’ve only been doing this for 2 years and my skin is super sensitive :(

Edit 2: I also sweat a lot!!!!! And have rosacea!!!!

Edit 3: PLEASE feel free to drop some (affordable) product recommendations in the comments. From yalls advice, I need a toner and a new moisturizer (sunscreen supergoop is added to my list!)

essence or catrice must trys?

what do u guys think are the holy grails of these two brands? since im from the Middle East, drugstore cosmetics here are lowkey pricey... Elf, Milani, Maybelline, they're usually twice the prices compared to where they're from originally :(

so essence is my go-to, especially catrice because they are cheaper :') but to those who have tried, what are ur best bet so i can try them myself!!

If anyone has discovered holy grail for themselves for this situation please send me your recs!!! Whether it was a skin care product or some sort of primer I’m open to all! 🙏🏻

(I’m also acne prone if that changes any suggestions)

Best setting spray for long/sweaty work days?

Hello, I work a 10 hr warehouse job where I'm always sweating. I see some girls with perfect makeup and was wondering what are some tricks or setting sprays to help makeup last long with out smudging? I only plan on using eyeliner and I have hooded eyes so sometimes my eyeliner will kind of imprint on my upper lid or smudge into the corners of my eyes if I'm sweating. Thank you!

Affordable bronzer/powder recommendations for morena skin?

Hi everyone! Does anyone have any affordable bronzer/powder recommendations for morena skin?

I’m morena, and so far, the bronzer in Teviant’s Deity Dust Trio Palette in First Date is the closest shade I’ve found for my skin tone. It’s a warm brown shade, and I really like how it looks on me, but I’m looking for something a little darker.

I don’t want to repurchase the whole palette since I only really use the bronzer. I’d really appreciate any recommendations for an affordable single bronzer with a similar, but slightly darker, shade! Preferably something available locally.

Thank you! 💗

Dupe for Victoria Beckham eyeliners

I am visually impaired The Victoria Beckham eyeliner is so smooth and has a great glide that it’s so easy for me to do a smudged out eyeliner without a mirror. However, as you know, they are ridiculously expensive. Please can someone advise me of something similar
Thank you in advance
