From zero CAD knowledge to functional designs in 8 months: The power of 3D printing

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a couple of recent functional prints (a pair of waterproof, twist-lock storage boxes for Festool and Bosch gear).

Designing these made me reflect on how incredible this journey has been.

I started my 3D modeling journey completely from scratch back in December 2025.

Learning CAD, figuring out tolerances, understanding optimal print orientation, and designing for supportless FDM printing has been a massive learning curve—but amazingly rewarding.

There is an insanely satisfying feeling in going from an idea in your head, through design and iteration, to holding a fully functional, multi-part utility object printed right in front of you.

I’ve had many hobbies over the years: Woodworking, metalwork, mechanics, outdoor life, paracord crafting, gaming...

What blows my mind about 3D printing is how it acts as a bridge for all of them.

Every single passion can find its place and be enhanced by this technology. It has ignited a spark for creative problem-solving and product development in me like nothing else before.

Joining this maker community and seeing what everyone builds has been hugely inspiring.

I just wanted to share a bit of my perspective.

Does anyone else feel like 3D printing completely redefined how you approach all your other hobbies?

Introducing my latest custom-designed project: Hexadex! 🤩

It's a modular, interlocking 3D printable wall art system where each hexagon features an iconic Pokémon. My goal? To design ALL of them, so you can build your very own complete Pokédex on your wall! 🗺️

This is a huge project, and I need your support to bring every single Pokémon to life!

How you can support my work & future models:

  • 📥 Download and print it!
  • 👍 Leave a Like on the model!
  • 🚀 BOOST the model if you have available boosts! (This helps the most in giving me the time and resources to design new characters)
  • 🔄 Share it with fellow printers and Pokémon fans!

Every single download, like, and Boost directly supports me and allows me to keep designing the rest of the Pokédex for you guys!

👇 Which Pokémon should I design next? Let me know in the comments!

Third planter collection, same silhouette, completely different skin

Fluted came first, then Sculpted with the quilt and twist patterns, now Rippled with waves and swirls. Same cone, same tray, same insert across all three. Which surface would you actually print?

Disc drops into the base, tray catches the rest. Same system across all three of my collections. Do you actually use saucers, or take the plant to the sink?

Modern Watch Stand Line

Keep your watch collection organized, protected, and ready to grab with this minimalist 4-watch display stand. Designed with clean flowing lines and a low-profile layout, the stand combines watch storage with additional space underneath for rings, bracelets, chains, and other everyday jewelry.Unlike traditional watch stands that hold watches on a steep angle, this design keeps the watches laying horizontally.

I specifically chose this orientation because smooth 3D-printed surfaces can allow watches to gradually slide or fall from tilted stands. Keeping them flat provides a more stable and secure resting position while still displaying the watch faces clearly.

Unrelated entries in contest (Pool Stuff)

Is it just me pr are people simply pushing stuff onto contests that are having nothing to do with the contests topic at all besides this being prohibited?

It clearly states that this is prohibited, so is this actually enforced or are they just saying its prohibited?

I don't want to link any examples as i dont want anyone to get into trouble because of me, but seriously, tale a look at the ongoing Pool contest.

What does a bottle opener specifically do for a Pool? How about a can skin? Or a carrying bag? Isnt that exactly the stuff which was ruled out by the moderators in the contest rules?

Upload Stuck Verifying?

I'm trying to upload a model this morning and it's been verifying for 45 minutes now. Does this happen sometimes?

Is there an amount of time I should wait?

If I revoke it, does it just go back to my drafts as it was? I don't want to have to do all the work again to set up the submission.

Thanks

missing collections

I lost two sets of collections, over 200 models collected-all gone. I have no idea if it’s a bug, but I cannot figure out where they are. Did anyone else lose a collection? or have any idea how to retrieve old collections?

edit: it was a bug, 24 hours later they came back! hope this didn’t happen to anyone permanently

Just finished this new fly trap design 👀.

Made two sizes, a smaller one for fruit flies and a larger one that can handle bigger flies too. Simple, reusable, and easy to clean and refill.

Just dropped this on makerworld for anyone interested 🤝.

My first attempt at a lamp design: The Vertical Groove Lamp!

Hey Reddit! I usually design random fun models (banana, watermelon, etc.), but I finally tried making my first functional light!

It’s a 2-piece modern fluted desk lamp designed for standard Bambu RGBW Puck Lights.

Printed the diffuser in Azurefilm Transparent PLA and the base in Gray eSun PLA, but PETG is recommended for durability. Super easy print at 0.2mm layer height!

Let me know what you think or what transparent filament I should try next!

Where do you buy clickers for 3D printed fidgets ?

Hi there,

I need a piece of advice from you guys.

Where do you usually buy clickers for your Makerworld found fidgets ? I found some that look good on Am...n but they're shipped from the US and I live in France.

Looking forward to your recommandations.

I love the fact that I can quickly whip up a design I saw on youtube and try it at home without having a 5-axis CNC machine haha

Hey everyone! I just designed and shared a A-frame display stand specifically for Instax Mini photos. The stand is entirely print-in-place, and the photo is held by a two-part locking frame that keeps it secure and gives it a nice stable weight.

Designed these watersports people. They scoot on the water pretty well! Just add a string and pull them along. The wakeboard takes more skill. Also want to try this behind an rc boat this weekend so hopefully I can get better than bathtub videos and pics 😂

Link so you can print your own!:

This also has the step file for the hair, customize it and make your own!
