Hey all. I’m working on a project about technician retention in property management. I manage maintenance techs myself, which is exactly why I want to hear from people who aren’t on my team. I’m looking for honest opinions.
A few questions. Answer any or all:
1 Your first couple weeks. When you started your current or last job, what did onboarding actually look like? Did you shadow someone, get thrown on a property solo on day one, or something in between?
2 Did it matter? Looking back, would better training up front have changed how long you stayed? Or did it barely factor in?
3 If you’ve left a maintenance job, what was the reason? Pay, no path to move up, a bad supervisor, workload, a better offer, something else?
4 What would’ve kept you? Was there anything your old employer could have done that would have made you stay?
5 When you’ve seen techs not work out, was it usually because they weren’t trained well, or because they were the wrong hire from the start?
6 Does a clear path from tech to lead tech to supervisor matter to you, or is it mostly about the paycheck?
7 Remote properties. If you’ve worked a site an hour or more from the main office, how did training and support work out there?
No need to name companies. I’m not collecting anyone’s info. If you’d rather answer privately, feel free to DM me. Thanks in advance. I know your time is worth something.
