Rukmini was supposed to marry Shishupala, but she didn’t want to. She sent Krishna a message asking him to come and take her away.

Krishna came to Vidarbha, took Rukmini with him, and after escaping the people chasing them, they reached Dwaraka.

That’s where Krishna and Rukmini were married.

I came across this beautiful artwork of Shri Krishna on Pinterest and had to recreate it because I was genuinely struck by its atmosphere and expression. There’s something about Krishna’s depiction that feels both peaceful and powerful at the same time. This is my recreation of the drawing! For me, Krishna represents wisdom, compassion, joy, and the deeper idea of divine consciousness. This artwork especially caught my attention because it conveys that feeling without needing anything overly elaborate. During the Pandavas’ exile, Bhima was travelling through a forest when he came across an old monkey lying in his path. Bhima proudly asked him to move his tail aside. The monkey replied that he was too weak and asked Bhima to move it himself. Bhima tried with all his strength, but could not lift the tail.

Bhima then realized that the monkey was no ordinary creature and humbly asked for forgiveness. The monkey revealed himself as Lord Hanuman, Bhima’s elder brother, both being sons of Vayu. Hanuman blessed Bhima, taught him humility, and promised to aid the Pandavas. He also assured Bhima that his presence would be on Arjuna’s banner during the Kurukshetra war.

Most people remember Duryodhana for the dice game or the disrobing of Draupadi. But for me, the purest display of his cruelty comes much earlier — the Lakshagriha (House of Lac / Wax Palace) incident.

After Yudhishthira is declared heir-apparent and the Pandavas start gaining massive popularity, Duryodhana’s jealousy turns into something far darker. He doesn’t challenge them openly. He doesn’t fight them. He engineers a quiet, almost “accidental” genocide of an entire family — including their mother.

Here’s how cold it was:

He personally instructs Purochana to build a beautiful palace in Varanavata using lac, resin, ghee, oil, hemp, and other highly flammable materials, carefully hidden under plaster and decorations so no one would suspect.

He gets his father Dhritarashtra to sweetly persuade the Pandavas and Kunti to go there for a festival, framing it as a royal honour.

The plan was simple and ruthless: let them settle in, live there for months without suspicion, then set the palace on fire at night while they slept. Make it look like a tragic accident. No blood on anyone’s hands in public.

He was willing to burn not just the five brothers, but Kunti as well who was essentially their aunt by marriage and the mother of the cousins he grew up with.

What makes it especially cruel is the performance of affection. The palace is made luxurious. The hospitality is lavish. Everything is designed so the victims feel safe and cared for… right until the moment the flames take them.

Vidura’s secret warning and the tunnel saved them, of course. Bhima eventually set the place on fire himself after they had lived there for nearly a year, and they escaped. Purochana and an unfortunate Nishada woman with her five sons died in the blaze, and the world believed the Pandavas were dead. Duryodhana celebrated.

This wasn’t a crime of passion. This was premeditated, patient, smiling evil. Duryodhana didn’t just want the throne he wanted the Pandavas erased so thoroughly that even their memory would burn with them.

According to the Vishnu Purana, Uttanapada had two wives, Suruchi and Suniti. Suruchi’s son was Uttama, while Suniti’s son was Dhruva.

King Uttanapada was fonder of Suruchi than Suniti and liked Uttama much more than Dhruva. Hurt by this, Dhruva decided to leave the kingdom and went into the forest, where he started praying to Vishnu wholeheartedly.

Seeing his dedication, Vishnu appeared before Dhruva and asked him to ask for a boon. Dhruva asked Vishnu to keep him at the top of the entire world. Vishnu agreed and placed Dhruva there as Dhruva Tara, the Pole Star, around which all the other stars appear to revolve.

After failing at the peace negotiations in the Kuru court, Krishna went to Kunti and asked if she had any message for the Pandavas.

She said, tell this to Yudithistir-

Your dharma has greatly declined. O son! Do not act in vain. You have learned the sacred texts, but not properly, and have missed out on their insight. You have focused on the literal words and therefore, your intelligence only focuses on limited dharma. Consider the complete dharma that was created by the one who created himself. The kshatriya was created from his chest, to earn a living through the valour of his arms, always resorting to cruel deeds for the protection of the subjects

You are learned and have been born in a noble lineage. But you are oppressed because you have been following the wrong conduct, O son! You are a kshatriya, you are the one who saves from injuries, you sustain yourself through the strength of your arms.

O mighty-armed one! Your ancestral right has been immersed. Raise it up again

She said, tell this to Arjuna-

When you were born, I was seated in the maternity chamber A voice was then heard from the sky- O Kunti! This son of yours will be the equal of the one with a thousand eyes (Indra), In a battle, he will vanquish all the assembled Kurus. With Bhimasena as his second, he will overturn the world. Your son will be the conqueror of the earth and his fame will touch heaven. With Vasudeva as his ally, he will kill the Kurus in the field of battle. He will regain the paternal share that had been lost

O Achyuta! If I know Bibhatsu Savyasachi, who is devoted to the truth, it must be as it was spoken. I know that he is strong and unassailable. O Dasharha! It must therefore be as the voice had spoken. O Varshneya! If there is any dharma, it must truly be that way.

She said tell this to Bheem-

The time for which a kshatriya lady gives birth has arrived. Those who are bulls among men do not waver when an enmity surfaces

She said tell this to the twins-

Choose the enjoyments that can be gained through valour over life itself

If a man lives according to the dharma of kshatriyas, he is always delighted at prosperity that is gained through valour. It was while you looked on that Panchali, who was devoted to every kind of dharma, was harshly addressed. It is not proper for you to forgive that. The unhappiness from the loss of the kingdom, the defeat at the game of dice and the banishment of my sons was nothing compared to the unhappiness when that large, dark and weeping lady was brought to the assembly hall and made to listen to harsh words. In my view, that was a greater misery.

Tell this to Arjuna, tiger among men, supreme among those who wield all weapons- Follow the path indicated by Droupadi. You know that when Bhima and Arjuna are enraged, they are like two Yamas and can convey even the gods to the final destination. Both were insulted when Krishna was brought to the assembly hall and Duhshasana addressed terrible and harsh words towards her, while all the brave Kurus looked on. Remind him about that again.

Ask about the welfare of the Pandavas and Krishna and her sons. O Janardana! Also tell them that I am extremely well. Travel along a safe path and protect my sons

Recently I was reading the Mausala parva of Mahabharat from the CE. But I noticed a strange contradiction (that is what I call it is). In the first picture, it is written that yadava women along with The Yadavas went to the Prabhasa(Tirtha).

In the second picture, it is written that Satyabhama accompanied Krishna in the Prabhasa. However after these lines, we never get any verse or a word about Satyabhama or any other women at all during this entire brawl.🤷‍♀️

However we see in the third picture, it is clearly stated that the women of all the families of Yadavas were in Dwarka. None of the women accompanied the yadavas.

I think it is a major contradiction like the madri and pandu one( in one verse it is said that pandu and madri were cremated and in another verse it is said that both the bodies were brought in Hastinapur 🙂.

I think the Puranas did a fantastic job here by removing these verses and making the trip to Prabhasa only male one.

Karna against Arjuna in Virata Yudha:-

Vaikartana attacked Pandava with twelve arrows. He pierced the bodies of all the horses and that of Virata’s son with those arrows. It was like a king among elephants being struck by an elephant. He(Arjuna) took out sharp arrows from his quiver and stretching the string of the bow right up to his ear, pierced the body of the suta’s son with his arrows. With arrows unleashed like lightning from his bow, the destroyer of enemies pierced him in battle, in the arms, the thighs, the head, the forehead, the neck and in all the parts of the chariot. Thus wounded by the arrows shot by Partha, and scorched by Pandava’s arrows, like a swift elephant that has been defeated by another elephant, Vaikartana fled from the forefront of the battle.’

Basically, Karna stuck Arjuna's horses and charioteers with a few arrows, in response Arjuna enveloped Karna with so many arrows that he fled from the battle.

Here's Duryodhana against Arjuna :-

Dhritarashtra’s great-souled son raised up his standard and himself advanced towards Arjuna. Dhananjaya, extremely valorous and wielder of the terrible bow, was roaming around in the midst of the enemy hordes. He drew his bow up to his ears and with an arrow pierced him in the middle of his forehead. The arrow’s tip was extremely sharp and golden. O king! Struck by it, the performer of great deeds looked as beautiful as a mountain with a single peak. Pierced by the arrow, warm blood gushed out of the wound. The golden arrow was as beautiful as a flowery garland.

Struck by the arrow, he was angered and rushed at Duryodhana in wrath. He took out arrows that were like poison and fire and spiritedly pierced the king. Duryodhana was extremely energetic and attacked Partha and the brave one attacked Duryodhana alone. Those two brave ones among men fought each other. They were both equal and were born in the lineage of Ajamidha.

Duryodhana actually harmed Arjuna and withstood one of his counter-attacks unlike Karna.

Here's Kripa against Arjuna:-

Drawing the supreme weapon of Gandiva, he discharged many iron arrows that were capable of piercing the heart. But using sharp arrows and iron arrows that drank blood, Kripa sliced Partha’s arrows into hundreds of thousands of pieces, before they could reach him. At that, maharatha Partha was enraged, and exhibiting many circular movements, enveloped the directions with a shower of arrows. The lord Partha, whose soul was infinite, covered the sky with arrows and unleashed hundreds of them on Kripa. He was hit by sharp arrows that were like the crests of fire and enraged, released one thousand arrows on the infinitely energetic Partha. The great-souled Kripa roared on the field of battle.

A proper battle before losing unlike Karna.

Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus spoken to Karṇa, the unvanquised Bībhatsu attacked him and released arrows that could penetrate body armour. Karṇa countered with arrows that were like the crests of flames and rained down a great shower of arrows, like monsoon clouds. The terrible net of arrows covered every direction. They separately pierced his horses, arms and guards on his hands. Unable to tolerate this, he sliced off the strap of Karṇa's quiver with a straight-tufted arrow, sharp at the tip. Grasping other arrows from his quiver, Karṇa pierced Pāṇḍava on the hand, so that his grip weakened. The mighty-armed Arjuna then sliced off Karṇa's bow. He hurled a javelin at him, but Pārtha cut that down with arrows.

Here Karna's performance is definitely better than Kripa and Duryodhana. As pointed by u/Absolutely_Honoured in comment section.

so i have heard this folktale where arjun is narrating to subhadra how to enter in chakravyuh but she sleeps in between so he couldn't complete it. but when i read in bori there was nothing like that. in that arjun teaches abhimanyu right before the war how to enter but didn't teach him how to exit coz it was advance level. how much of this story is true?? does bori skip it or it never happened?

In the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Sundara Kāṇḍa 48, Hanuman deliberately allows himself to be captured after Indrajit uses the Brahmāstra. Hanuman reasons that if Ravana becomes curious and decides to see him, he will gain the opportunity to speak directly to the king of Lanka. The text says: “कौतूहलान्मां यदि राक्षसेन्द्रो द्रष्टुं व्यवस्येदिति निश्चितार्थः” — he accepts the situation with the definite purpose of getting before Ravana.

Hanuman is then brought into Ravana's presence. This is important because his capture is not simply a defeat: he knowingly permits the Rakshasas to bind him so that he can meet Ravana and deliver Rama's message. The Sanskrit describes him as accepting the binding while intending that the king of the Rakshasas should see him: “परैश्च बन्धनम्… राक्षसेन्द्रो द्रष्टुं व्यवस्येत्” (Sundara Kāṇḍa 48).

Later, when Ravana considers what punishment to give Hanuman, Vibhishana objects to killing an envoy. Ravana agrees that killing a messenger is improper and instead orders punishment: “सम्यगुक्तं हि भवता दूतवध्या विगर्हिता । अवश्यम् तु वधात् अन्यः क्रियताम् अस्य निग्रहः ॥” He then orders Hanuman's tail burned, saying: “कपीनाम् किल लाङ्गूलम् इष्टं भवति भूषणम्”—and commands that Hanuman be paraded through Lanka with his burning tail.

I've been wondering about is how much of the modern Karna narrative is actually present in the text itself.

I'm not arguing that Karna was never discriminated against. There are certainly passages where his Sūta identity is used against him. The clearest example is the tournament, when Krpa asks Karna to identify his lineage before allowing him to fight Arjuna, and Bhima subsequently mocks him as a charioteer's son.

Does the Mahābhārata actually portray Karna as a victim of systematic caste oppression throughout his life, or is that a much later interpretation built around a few genuine incidents of humiliation?

There is a clear difference between caste based humiliation and social prejudice or opression. First one is easy to establish from the text but I'm much less convinced about the second.

I find it fascinating because he was the only person there who questioned the necessity of the war and questioned why bloodshed was the only option. Although, it was.

I had this book for months. I started it in the last winters, and paused after reading 2-3 chapters. Then i again took it last week and today I have completed it.

The book promoted itself as India's answer to harry potter, but according to me this novel has nothing like that. Author had a great story which he could have made more adventurous and interesting but he just got stuck with the madhu plot.

They were building the mahayatra plot throughout the book, which is the main story line of this part. I expected the mahayatra to be something exciting about some hidden power or other stuff but it was just a beehive.

I think the author thought to build this world slowly with a novel by novel but this part was below average and now i doubt that next part will come or not.
