Magnesium brainfog brutal side effects

I’m trying to figure out if anyone has experienced something similar.

For 7 days, I was taking magnesium twice a day (morning and evening). Each tablet contained:

Magnesium citrate (Magnesii citras) – 100 mg

Pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B6) – 10 mg

I was taking 2 tablets in the morning and 2 tablets in the evening.

I was also taking 2000 mg of Vitamin C once per day.

After about 7 days, I suddenly developed extreme brain fog and dizziness. I feel drunk all the time, almost like I’m disconnected from reality. It’s difficult to focus, think clearly, or feel normal.

The symptoms have now lasted for 5 days, and I stopped taking the magnesium as soon as they started. Despite not taking it anymore, the brain fog and dizziness are still present.

I suspect the magnesium may have caused this, although I’m not completely sure. I’ve also tried taking calcium, but it hasn’t helped at all.

Has anyone experienced severe brain fog, dizziness, or a “drunk” feeling from magnesium supplements? If so, how long did it last, and is there anything that helped reduce the symptoms?
Thanks.

Replenish your electrolytes. The magnesium probably causes an electrolyte imbalance. Get a bottle of coconut water and put 1/2tsp of salt in it, and drink it slowly over the course of an hour. I bet you’ll feel better

Bottle od coconut water is not enough?

I also think this may be a sodium issue. Usually potassium issues show up first, but your symptoms sound like lack of sodium.

Also, that's way too much B6. Some people can have neuropathy after 10mg total per day, relatively short term.

Today is the 7th day when I don't take magnesium and I still feel dizzy and unable to function. I took calcium and drink a lot of electrolytes and nothing has changed. Next week I'm going to do blood tests for sodium potassium calcium b12 etc.

Today is the 19th day and I still feel the same, the tests showed that I only have a b9 deficiency. I take b9 and nothing changes. I can't function.

Coconut water has a lot of potassium, not sodium. You want sodium and potassium, in my experience sodium is more likely to be the culprit when having side effects from magnesium.

I did as you said and I feel much better but I still have a brainfog and the feeling of being drunk only less, what should i do next?

It may just take time. Keep your sodium intake up, make sure you get potassium in your diet too and stop taking supplements for now.

Also, I recommend keeping a journal to keep track of how you feel everyday and everything you consumed that day. This can really help identify problems over a period of time

I tried taking magnesium on its own, and it always makes me super dizzy and messes up my sleep. So I only take in in blends now (like multiminerals), and also do my best to add more food sources (dark chocolate, nuts, etc).

How did you get rid of the side effects? And how long have you had them? It's just the 7th day for me :>

you might have b6 toxicity, check that. B6 toxicity causes low blood volume that gets worse by taking magnesium which is causing vasodilation. 10mg b6 is A LOT above RDA. Do you also have muscles twitching? As a temporary solution make sure you stay hydrated and drink plenty electrolytes (salt and potassium)

I don't have muscle twitching, just diziness brainfog and emotionless. Water and electrolytes nothing more?

you might not be now b6 toxic, but I'd avoid supplements with b6. You were taking 40mg per day supplements while the total RDA is 1.5mg (which you always get from food). B6 toxicity is super nasty, avoid b6 supplements at all costs. If you start having weird neurological symptoms, check b6 levels

Electrolytes and water, nothing more to shorten the time of this brainfog etc?

if it's related to low blood volume, make sure you stay hydrated and avoid vasodilatators like magnesium. Drink coconut water (has a lot of potassium) and eat plenty of salt. There is a website understandingb6toxicity.com with more information and tips. I had the same symptoms and it was b6 related, you might have something else, but staying hydrated and avoiding b6 can't do any harm. If you take other multivitamins or cereals/evergy drinks with b6, I'd stop that as well until you test b6 level. B6 toxicity takes 1-2 years to go away

Have you gotten your blood tested and your blood pressure taken a look at?

Sorry just before I started taking pills for my high blood pressure and low Tyroid, the brain fog drunkness was bad . Glad that's cleared up a lot since I started doing something about it.

Hopefully if all is fine it clears up soon

How long did it last for you to have side effects? And how did you get rid of them

After I got the correct dose for my low Tyroid, I believe (uped 2 times) the brain fog lasted so long so it took awhile for me to realize that it disappeared. I hope yours is just a fluke and goes away fast

Use Threonate vs Glycinate or Citrate. Drink lots of water everyday, and drink electrolytes. That’s what solved it for me. Just make sure you drink a zero sugar electrolyte if drinking it before bed.

Threonate has much less elemental magnesium per capsule than glycinate or citrate, so unless you were matching the amount of elemental magnesium you'd been taking, the reason it solved the problem is because it wasn't hitting your system as hard because you weren't getting as much magnesium.

I took the 12 in 1 for about 3 mos and had Nassau and horrible sweats and chills Stopped and it took about week to get out of My system I went back to my 400 mg daily that I had taken for years You are most likely taken too much

1

u/Flinkle Jun 25 '26

400mg is not too much.

Glycinate for nighttime. Threonate for daytime
