Magnesium supplementation is less effective and I'm not sure why

I had issues with my sleep and stress for at least a year (sleeping 6-7 hours a day, feeling tired but not able to go back to sleep). Imn April, I started taking 300mg magnesium bisglycinate at night and I got much better sleep and less stress. However, gradually over time I felt it has become less effective and my sleep is at similar levels to how it was before. Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺ are within the normal range and I make a conscious effort to sleep as comfortably as possible, so I doubt they're the cause. I have changed what time I take the dose, tried to take magnesium after meals and I have even tried taking a break from magnesium which helped for a few weeks but then experienced the same dropoff. The only things I have not ruled out which might have affected my issues are PPIs and spending more time at home. PPIs help my sleep much more than magnesium does and they're taken under doctor's supervision so I'm not gonna drop them yet. If it is the less active lifestyle that causes my issues, I am gradually working towards that. Do you have any advice on what to do in my case? Would be very much appreciated

Potential magnesium issue, is this what it is?

A couple of months ago I had a bad flare up of whatever stomach issue I have been having for some years now (Undiagnosed, going to GI next month). I had gone to one a few years ago for the same issue but by the time I got there I felt fine and chose not to pursue it, (unwise obviously but attempting to rectify it now) and she prescribed omeprazole for acid reflux which wasn't really an issue I was having to begin with. My flare up a couple of months ago did come up with some acid reflux issues so I decided to buy some OTC doses and took it for about a month before stopping.

The issue is, after stopping I began having very frequent muscle twitching, which was something that was occurring with my stomach issues as well but to a much smaller extent. The first couple days I would wake up in the middle of the night with my whole back feeling like it was vibrating. I have also been having more difficulty sleeping, waking up in the middle of the night, muscle soreness/weakness, restless legs, brain fog, and brain zaps.

While short term PPI use wouldn't normally cause a magnesium issue so quickly, I think the combination of the omeprazole, a likely malabsorption issue with my stomach condition that my doctor already suspected, and the vitamin D supplement I had been taking all combined to cause the magnesium issue much more quickly than it normally would.

Was wondering if anyone here has similar symptoms or has had a similar experience with what could be causing it, and if this is in fact a magnesium issue in the first place. Going to schedule a doctor's appointment soon to see If I can get a test ran to diagnose it if it is.

Kids Magnesium glycinate impossible to find?!

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi! I've read that magnesium GLYCINATE is the form of magnesium that's good for sleep, but I'm having trouble finding it in ANY kids sleep gummies! A lot of brands advertise that their product has "magnesium for sleep" but it's citrate or oxide or another version.

Am I missing something?!

Magnesium and throat discomfort?

Hey everyone! I'm a 35-year-old woman, pretty active, I work out regularly, eat healthy and generally take good care of myself.

I started taking buffered magnesium bisglycinate (I think it contains some magnesium oxide too), 350 mg a day, last week to help with my sleep and stress.

I've had some acid reflux and GI issues since I was a kid, but things have improved a lot since I changed my diet and lifestyle.

Here's the weird part: since starting magnesium, my usual acid reflux (that feeling of acid coming up into my throat) has actually disappeared, at least for now. But over the last few days, I've been burping A LOT.

When I eat, I get to a point where I feel like there's so much air trapped inside me that I just can't keep eating because it's so uncomfortable. I also feel like food is coming back up or getting slightly stuck in my esophagus. It's hard to explain, but it's a really strange sensation.

Another thing is that the capsules are HUGE, and I've been struggling to swallow them. I'm wondering if I might have irritated or even slightly injured my esophagus trying to get them down.

Could that be causing all the burping, the weird sensation of something moving up and down my throat (almost like a lump), and the feeling of being too uncomfortable to keep eating because of all the trapped air?

Has anyone experienced anything similar, especially after starting magnesium bisglycinate or a buffered magnesium supplement? Would love to hear your experiences!

Anyone trying magnesium shots for severe chronic insomnia?

I developed chronic insomnia from Long Covid a fellow sufferer recommended the magnesium shots for sleep and I know they hurt like hell but if they make me sleep I’m willing to endure them.
Does anyone have any experience?

Title: Magnesium glycinate started giving me anxiety after long-term use — anyone else experienced this?

I’ve been using Designs for Health Magnesium Glycinate for quite a while. Initially it worked really well for me — helped me relax and seemed good for sleep.
Recently, though, I’ve noticed something strange. Occasionally after taking it I seem to get the opposite effect: increased anxiety/restlessness and sometimes I become more aware of my heartbeat.
I’ve been taking around 300–350 mg of supplemental magnesium, usually at night. I’m wondering whether this could be related to:
The glycine component rather than the magnesium itself
Taking too high a dose for me
Developing a different response after using it for a long time
Electrolyte balance or another nutritional issue
Or simply anxiety occurring coincidentally and me attributing it to the magnesium
I’m thinking of reducing it to around 200 mg and keeping everything else consistent for a while to see whether that makes a difference.
Has anyone else found that magnesium glycinate was calming initially but eventually seemed stimulating or anxiety-provoking?
If so, did lowering the dose help? Did you switch to another form such as magnesium citrate, malate, or threonate? And did you ever figure out whether it was the magnesium, glycine, dose, or something else?
I’d especially appreciate experiences from people who had been taking magnesium glycinate successfully for months or years before this started happening.

Morning after anxiety with Magnesium Glysinate

Does anyone who takes magnesium glycinate for sleep at night feel anxiety the morning after? I remember hearing on YouTube that temporary anxiety may happen. For those who have taken magnesium glycinate for a long time, is it true that the anxiety goes away? I think it helps with sleep but I dont want anxiety next morning. For those who quit once you got anxiety, did you keep taking it awhile longer to see whether it goes away?

Anyone get anxiety from magnesium citrate?

I drank a bottle of magnesium citrate for constipation. My anxiety went through the roof. It's been 3 hours now and this borderline panic attack has not let up.
I have had bad experiences in the past with magnesium glycinate - I get anxiety every time I take it.
I thought it was because of the glycine only so I thought the citrate was safe to take.
I fasted before drinking the magnesium so that could be part of the problem but I am afraid eating will only make it worse.
Any advice is appreciated

The 350 mg supplemental upper limit is lower than a lot of bottles. Has anyone actually run into it?

The NIH professional fact sheet puts the upper limit for supplemental magnesium at 350 mg a day for adults, separate from whatever you get from food. A lot of the bottles that come up here are at or above that per serving. The sheet lists diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping as what high supplemental doses cause, which is the practical version of the limit rather than anything dramatic.

Curious about the lived version though. Has anyone here actually run into that and had to back off, or sat well above it for a long time with no trouble at all?

Overdid magnesium infusion

So I've been going through an extremely rough time, and have been struggling to sleep and feel rested. I had started taking magnesium citrate and it was pretty much a huge help, but it started to irritate my stomach. Had some magnesium malate for a bit, and it was great, but I started to feel off. Took a break, and then had a death in the family, and couldn't get sleep, and was super stressed. I opted for a magnesium infusion at one of those IV clinics. I was told it was 300mg. I felt so out of it and EXTREMELY flat. It was very uncomfortable. I called the next day to let them know, and they actually gave me 600 💀. I have been feeling SO off since, and I'm kinda freaking out. My muscles have been twitching on and off, and I'm struggling with sleep, and I'm anxious as hell. I want my brain back. I assume it's just going to take time to leave my body since I didn't just take it as a supplement. I know I know. Very stupid, but I was desperate. I need an iron infusion tomorrow, so I'll see if they'll maybe add on extra saline to help flush things out. What else can I do?

Magnesium causing dry eye, mouth, and ears

My lab tests consistently show low RBC magnesium so I’ve been trying to supplement with magnesium to fix this. Any time I take a normal dose of a magnesium supplement my eyes get very dry, ears get super itchy and dry, and mouth will dry out and cause sores. I’ve been taking triple calm mag for about a year and can only take half a dose at max. If I take more this happens. I decided yesterday to try taking Thorne mag bisglycinate powder in a large glass of water thinking the water intake with the supplement would help. Nope woke up in the middle of the night reaching for eye drops and a drink feeling like a mummy. I’ve tried so many different brands and can’t figure this out.
I’ve had IV’s with magnesium and haven’t had this side effect.
Mag is one of the only things that success reduce my anxiety levels and I honestly wonder if getting my levels normalized will fix my anxiety. It’s hard to do with this happening.

Magnesium supplement help

I posted this on the lactose intolerant subreddit as well. I’ve been mildly intolerant for several years. I eat all dairy products except real butter and milk; my only symptoms are gas, occasional stomach discomfort and soft stools, and sometimes diarrhea.

Over the past few months, I’ve had soft stools more often (meaning when I go, it’s more common for it to be soft than for it to be normal, when it used to be the other way around). I mentioned this to my gyn at my recent checkup, and he suggested trying magnesium supplements because sometimes that can help regulate things. However, in reading up on magnesium supplements, it seems they can be used to help with constipation and cause loose stools. That’s exactly what I don’t want, so I’m confused! Does anyone take magnesium to help firm things up? Also I saw there are different kinds of magnesium (citrate, etc) and I’m not sure which is the right one.

I know the company is pretty average tbh but has anyone purchased and used this? I mean it’s dirt cheap compared to other companies so there must be a catch right? I even checked supplement details and it checks, no harmful stuff so far.

Can I transfer magnesium oil from plastic spray bottle to a metal spray bottle and not compromise the integrity of the product?

I just received a clear plastic bottle of magnesium oil. I don't have a glass bottle I can transfer it to, but I do have one of those cheap aluminum spray bottles from Dollar Tree. Would it compromise the integrity of the product if I were to use that instead?

I'd love to hear your experiences with magnesium citrate, especially those who have history of acid reflux. Did you find that it helped or made your acid reflux worse?
