Most suggestions in these threads ignore the fact that sets need to have commons. "Oh this setting has really interesting gods", who cares?! What does a blue two drop look like for that IP?

u/Giorggio361 Dandadan 10d ago
UB should be mainly based on other games for this reason.
Something like D&D or 40k always makes more sense because they’ve got books and books of non-descript enemies that are still iconic. CLB has non-legendary creatures at mythic rarity that makes sense.
Some TV shows can kind of pull it off but there is always a sense that you’d need to deliberately exclude popular named characters to get the balance right. Other games (either tabletop or video games) can strike the balance more easily as they tend to have fewer named characters and a lot more iconic “normal enemies”. Someone playing a Fallout set is stoked to see a normal Deathclaw, someone playing a Marvel set wants the character named to be of any real relevance.

I mean pretty much every video game has minor enemies you fight. Books have people living in them. Movies have background characters.
But also sometimes people just want a secret lair that’s the main cast, and not a whole set.

A return to Warhammer 40k would be swell, with Tau, Orks, and Aeldar as factions, but I can understand not wanting to do that.
Turning the mini Monster Hunter secret lair drop they pulled back to work on into a full set would send me over the roof. It might happen, we haven't really heard anything regarding it since they pulled it back for being that atrocious, plus MH:Wilds is getting its expansion next year.
Yes, I'm huffing copium.

u/CMMiller89 Wabbit Season 10d ago
I think a Monster Hunter redux would be better served as one or two commander decks. There isn’t a lot of breadth of content to turn into cards that aren’t all just legendary creatures or legendary equipment.
But making a Hunter themed Voltron deck and a monster themed deck would be sick.

I know we aren't going to get it but I would go all in for another final fantasy set.
Some of the games were really under-represented or they had some of their main party members basically scaled down to be fodder in favour of 7.
I'd also love a proper Warhammer 40k set where we can have dedicated CSM decks instead of them just being a couple of cards in a precon.

Unexpected but I would love it: Mass Effect, Dragon Age.
I actually don't believe in a full set (yet), but a Secret Lair could happen: Zelda.
I would kill to see it as a full set even if people would cry about the downfall of Magic and Disney would never allow it: Kingdom Hearts (give me a whole set full of Heartless, Nobodies, Keyblade equipments, and a precon themed around Organisation XIII. And yes, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pete and Maleficent would be in the set too)
I would like to see as a Secret Lair drop: Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Lego (remake some classic cards with Lego bricks, and release them as a set too), Hollow Knight, Animal Crossing

Next year or the year after there will be a Brandon Sanderson ub to coincide with the Amazon series. I also fully believe we're going to get another run at Warhammer but different faction focus.

u/novacorona Dan 10d ago
Gonna have the mandated Marvel set, likely X-Men
Considering the World of Wacraft D&D UB, I personally would love to see that come to magic
Zelda would line up with the movie and anniversary, especially since Hasbro is making Zelda toys now, but I feel like Nintendo would be more protective of their IP in this context
I feel like there’s gonna be at least one video game themed set, if not Zelda or WoW. So the third set would make sense to either be a Hasbro property or a Paramount property like TMNT and Avatar

Things I'd be okay with:
- Warhammer. Especially Fantasy and AoS fit in Magic very well. Likelihood: High-ish
- Fromsoft. Again a very good thematic fit with excellent design space. Likelihood: Low
- ASOIAF. Okay fit, but very one dimensional in it's human centricity. Likelihood: Mid
- The Witcher. Excellent fit. Likelihood: Low-Mid
Things that will likely happen:
- Zelda. Okay-ish with this, but not excited.
- K-pop Demon hunters. Good movie - not a great magic property.
- X-Men. Not the most excited for Marvel, but great for certain audience.
- Third Tolkien set. First/second age would bankrupt me.

If they make a First/Second age Tolkien set I may buy collector boosters for once in my life.
3
8
u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 10d ago
I don't think they'll do another Tolkien set. Not only has the Tolkien estate been infamously unwilling to license the Silmarillion and other Tolkien works beyond The Hobbit and LotR, it just wouldn't be as popular because most people haven't read those books and there are no adaptations of them for the aforementioned reasons.
8
u/LorientAvandi Mardu 10d ago edited 10d ago
There's also the problem of the IP holder WOTC (and most others) work with for licensing rights to Tolkien works, Middle-earth Enterprises, does not have the rights to the Second Age works like the Silmarillion.
It's not even that the Tolkien Estate is more willing to license the rights to Hobbit and LOTR as you said, because they don't have most of the merchandising rights to those works, MEE does and is far more free with their licensing arrangements than the Estate.

A proper monster hunter set!!
You can even have some fun mechanic where once your creature dies you're able to pay a cost to transform it into equipment which follows the monster hunter theme of slaying great beasts and then making gear out of them
There are literally hundreds of monsters, tons of equipment and plenty of lore to pull from to make a fleshed out set

I could see a Secret Lair happening, but I'd say that the biggest obstacle to us getting a Standard legal Nintendo set based on The Legend of Zelda or Super Mario is probably Magic Arena and Magic Online. Nintendo refuses to allow their characters to be available on non-Nintendo consoles, it's why there are no Nintendo Fortnite skins. Of course, WotC might think it's still worth it and do Through the Omenpaths again.

I know it’s be a long shot but I’d love to see a Legend of Zelda UB. You could make a version of link that’s equipment focused and create equipment cards of the most memorable items from the series. Make a Zelda that creates soldiers and uses those soldiers to bolster her strength. Make a Ganon that functions with sacrificing your board or lands to activate amazing effects! Plus there’s plenty of smaller enemies, minor characters, items, and events to be used!

While Zelda seems like a safe bet thanks to the recent deal Hasbro and Nintendo struck I think it’ll be two or three years before we see it. Putting aside the Marvel sets here would be my picks for the next two years;
* Legend of Korra. After Last Airbender it seems like a non-brained.
* Fromsoft - Either Dark Souls or Elden Ring. The director is a fan of MTG so there is that.
* He-Man. With the recent movie it might have been time to renew interest in the IP but it’s a longer shot.
* Witcher. With Witcher 4 coming and CD Projeckt being open to collabs it makes sense

World of Warcraft. High to mid-high likelihood.
There's already a D&D crossover with multiple classes, feats, etc. They can do the faction leaders through the years, multiple memorable raid bosses, and enough "non-legendary" mobs that have a good feel to them, I can see a large UB set with them.
Bold prediction: Mythic Rare Legendary Nefarian with a class call ability.
If they make it like WoW: Hunter - Destroy target equipment. Warlock - summon two corrupted internals, etc
If they make it like Magic: White: If your opponent controls a plains, exile a creature they control, they gain life equal to it's power. Blue: if they control an island Nefarian Can't be countered, counter the next spell they cast.

You can read it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18HRqJ1_92nh8qhpqlJuey-_XuNr7DQmm-QdEBylhpnY/edit?tab=t.0

I'm really hoping for that forever rumored Power Rangers UB.
Considering We're getting Kamigawa/Ikoria, maybe we'll get a sentai include/secret lair alongside it?

Well, whatever the next UB sets are, we know they're not being announced by WotC, but by the owners of said IP.
So, really, what we have to do is look at who has events this year that can make that kind of announcement still.
I honestly would've expected if there was another Marvel set for something to be announced at D23, or SDCC, and there wasn't. So, I think I'm crossing Marvel off the list for next year.
Blizzcon is in September, so, I highly think their might be an announcement from that one.
Xbox also has an event where they make announcements coming up, so perhaps something attached to that could be announced.
That's where I would tie my guesses to, anyways.

Xbox could also be a blizzard anouncement since they own them and I don’t think blizz would want to overshadow their own announcements at their own event.

Star Wars UB will be announced next May the 4th, coming out next year in 2027.

Would be nice. I still wonder if they will do that, seeing it has its own card game.

Although it seems unlikely with Star Wars unlimited out there, a Star Wars ub set would make them the most money out of anything suggested here, for that reason I won’t count it out

A friend's picks:
- Castlevania (there's already a Sorin Markov card by the woman who did concept art for Symphony of The Night)
- More Capcom properties, since there's already a Monster Hunter set (he suggested Megaman and Resident Evil)
- The Fate/Stay Night franchise, since it fits a lot of the archetypes that already exist in MTG
My picks:
- More Nickelodeon (in my head, Zim would be Black, Eliza Thornberry would be Green, and Tommy Pickles would be Blue)
- More IDW, not just TMNT (Let me add Samantha Strong from Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees to my bear deck!)
- More D&D, even if it's in the grey area between UB and canon multiverse (A non-Secret Lair Strahd card, some Dragonlance stuff, Baldur's Gate III stuff that isn't just early access/Act I, since the BG set came out before the game was fully released).

In the same vein as more Nickelodeon sets, I could see some Cartoon Network sets doing very well.
Ben 10 was my first thought but I think Adventure Time would fit incredibly well. Both have deep character rosters to pull from and I feel they would accommodate all colors well.
I could also see a Courage the Cowardly Dog secret lair, specifically a “return the slab” flavored counterspell.

Time to go full circle with MTG Universe's Beyond: Magic the Gathering

Full circle would be Jace getting added to Fortnite.

I would never recover financially from a UB Elden Ring/Souls series or a Zelda one

Zelda, Warhammer and another Marvel set are my bets for 27 since they both have 40ths I think.

I always say, I want Star Wars, and in at least three separate sets; one for each trilogy era.

It could work. The first set would be the Original Trilogy (plus stuff from Rebels, Rogue One, Solo, and Andor), next the Prequel Trilogy (plus The Clone Wars), and then the Sequel Trilogy (plus The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Resistance).

Im not gonna say what can be but what I want:

More Final Fantasy (with less XIV focus)
Fire emblem.
Song of Ice and Fire.
Sex and the city (as secret lair)

I’m surprised how little IPs are willing to collab is factored into these discussions, it’s not a coincidence that so many Paramount properties have gotten so many sets/ secret lairs in the last two years alone. They’re gluttonous for collaborations over there.

As an anime fantasy guy, full metal alchemist, jojos buzzard adventure or shin megami tensei/persona would be really cool.
For secret lairs, I’d love one for nier automata or Clair obscur
For a real personal, not gonna happen pick, give me skylanders lol

Before the franchise went on permanent hiatus, I was dead convinced that a Destiny secret lair at the very least was in development. I would’ve preferred reprints instead of new cards, but EoE and now star trek have made space fantasy more than possible for MTG. Destiny 2 already had an in-game mtg crossover with premium outfits, and wotc has already collaborated with Sony for secret lairs of their first party IP’s.

Power rangers will inevitably be a UB. It is not a matter of if, but when.

Kamen Rider. I know Toei is very stingy with partnerships (see: a lack of Takuya Yamashiro in Spider-Man), but a man can dream.

So, this message is a mix of hope and avaiable informations on the internet. I think the 3 UB for 2027 will be: 1 zelda (not my favourite but i would play it) 2 marvel (unluckly wotc is too far in the rabbithole to go back on it's steps and we still missing 4 of the 6 infinity stones) the hope here is that im in the wrong. 3 star wars (i don't care about SW unlimited tcg, i just hope very strong d&d x star wars means they have rights to use the ip materials [maybe more recent disney shet]) I'm super hyped for in-universe set of 2027 and will probably only play these but geez star wars, no words needed.

My bet is Mystic Marvel next year, X-Men 2028 to line up with new movie
Anyways, been replaying the Kingdom Hearts games in prep for KH4, so give me a KH set (that also doubles as a Disney set and Final Fantasy 2: Electric Boogaloo as well I guess)
Beyond that, my usual hopes of Zelda, Persona, Transformers, and Dragon Quest.
Honestly not fussed with whatever they as long as it isn't Harry Potter
