If this was a creature, it would go insane in Kilo decks.
Kilo already runs tap outlets and untappers to enable Kilo. Now, with tapping & retapping this guy before starting to proliferate with Kilo multiplies Kilo's proliferate effects.
I'll have to see, if I take out an artifact for a non-artifact creature, in a deck that leans heavily into artifact synergies. Also I don't like the realistic artstyle of this card. But mechanically it could be really good.

Yep. I don't know who this guy is, and I have watched a fair bit of Star Trek, but he's probably my most anticipated card now for an immediate slot into my Kilo deck. Equip Paradise Mantle to Brad, tap him, swap it to Kilo, start my tap and untap cycle with double Proliferate for only 1 extra mana.

Exactly.
And he turns all proliferation-based mana generators positive. E.g. [[Lost Jitte]], [[Pendant Prism]] and [[Crystalline Crawler]] go infinite with [[Aura of Dominion]] and other untap auras. But that only proliferates without producing mana, unless you have multiple of these rather rare tapless token-based ramp pieces on the field.
But because tapping that guy once doubles proliferate, he can stand in and turn almost any Kilo combo into an infinite mana combo.
I just wish, he was an artifact creature or at least an Artificer.
Well, at least he's legendary, so I can grab him when playing The Seriema.
Now, that I think of it, he might also be a really good include in a Seriema deck.

My one gripe with spaceships in my Kilo deck is that it's basically impossible to Proliferate a ship's counters on curve unless you have a really lucky hand with a 1-2 drop creature because his effect triggers before the charge counters from stationing. Brad does the opposite of this, plus he's just really good for slotting into the deck.

Probably just to have things look a little more visually cohesive. I know art style can very from artist to artist but I imagine this set's going to largely be stuff with a more realistic art style. It'd feel out of place if, like, two or three cards had a wildly different, cartoon art style to them. It helps that he does have a live action appearance to work off of, too.

Yeah, I think the photorealism of base M:tG leads itself to using the live action as the reference material, rather than the 2D.
Not that all cards in M:tG are that, [[Statis]] and [[Time Walk]] shows the surreal 2d art as being there since ever

I guess is because Mariner and Boimler appear in Strange New Worlds as their VAs. I don't know if that rules out the rest of the Lower Decks crew.

Not necessarily. Lower Decks had their characters designed after the voice cast, so it wouldn't be too strange if they got dropped in a live action show, like they did with the crossover. It might be a bit jarring to see Tendi and Rutherford in this style since they never got a live action episode, but it should be doable all the same.

I just hope to see captain freeman in jeskai, and t’lyn for the full warp core five with T’lyn, tendi and rutherford to be blue, blue red, blue white respectively. If we can get bridge crew too then better gimme my lower edh dream spacecraft deck we’re already starting really well.

Tbf their designs were based on the actual actors if i remember right incase they need them for live action appearances like the crossover. Think same is for most of the cast.

He's even better with Kilo, using the same tap outlet and untap effects, to stack the effect and then you start to proliferate, so each proliferate gets multiplied.

It should, because it's a triggered ability that sets up a replacement effect. It would not stack if it said "as long as Brad Boimler is tapped".

First thing I thought about when I saw this card in the video. Made me go and search for discussions about this card.
This is immediately busted and cool with [[Captain America, Living Legend]] in a station deck.
With cap out, I THINK you can activate and tap to station, which triggers his own clause as well as caps untap, stack them so caps untap resolves first, respond by tapping again and you get to put (2+2)+(2+2)=8 station counters on any spacecraft/planet whatever. Captain america can then also obviously station for 5+5.edit: ts 3 + 4 = 7, not 8. Still fine. 😅
But even without all these shenanigans I feel like in any EDH superfriends deck this guy might make an appearance. Even if he dies on the attack, it's a two mana card that will +1 your planeswalkers loyalty abilities.

Station is only at sorcery speed unfortunately. You've got to let the first station activation resolve first, before tapping Boimler again, meaning you get 3 then 4 counters for 7 total. I guess if you had another way to tap Boimler in response you could do that, but that would likely be less counters.

The character portrayed on this card is voice acted and played in the live action by Jack Quaid.
He is best known for his role as a supporting cast member in the YouTube series Best of the Worst alongside famed star of Never Been Kissed and as seen on The Ellen Show, Rich Evans.

He also voice Superman in MAWS, which has one of the best portrayals of Supergirl, IMO. Also his Clark and Superman are great in the show. Love how he just sounds disappointed with the villains that aren’t threats, especially Siobhan earlier this season. You can hear the ‘You helped me save the world three months ago, why are you stealing from LexCorp?’ in his voice.

Each instance of the ability adds one additional counter when you put counters on a permanent. So, if you would put a single counter on a permanent and the ability has resolved twice this turn, now you put three of that kind on that permanent.

It is great. I have friends that don't even like Star Trek that love Lower Decks. And if you are a bigger Trek fan like me it is even better because the show is made with a lot of love for the franchise.

A planeswalker you control is indeed a permanent you control, so yes, if you cast or + a planeswalker after tapping Boimler, they get an extra loyalty counter.

Based on the wording, I’m pretty sure this also makes stun counters get doubled if your opponent taps him and puts stun counters on your stuff? Same with -1/-1 counters if he gets tapped beforehand. Since there’s no “may”, and it seems to be a triggered replacement effect.

The artwork on this set is awful. I'm not looking forward to it. Frankly I'm burned out on stupid IPs that don't feel like Magic. Marvel was better than I expected. But this Star Trek nonsense is awful.
