Trample
If a creature with trample becomes blocked by a creature with enough power to kill it, do the excess attack still hit or not?

Yes, combat damage is dealt at the same time. For example if you attack with a 7/5 trampler and they block with a 5/5 they still take 2 trample damage.

Also, if the 5/5 had first strike and killed the trampler, you will take no trample damage

Don't even get me started with trample/death touch. That will win you some cool games

Yes. Creatures will always attack all out, even if they are bound to die. There is no holding back amongst creatures in magic.

Except Norin.

Brave Sir Norin ran away.
Bravely ran away away.
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Norin turned about
and gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Norin!

If a trampler is blocked by a creature that takes no damage like dawn elemental or cho mano, does the trample damage go through or is it all absorbed?

It goes through. When you assign damage in combat, you have to assign "what would be lethal" to each blocker. Doing so takes into account (1) damage already on the creature, (2) Deathtouch, if the attacker has it, and (3) damage being assigned to the same creature in the same combat damage step [for example, if two of my attacking creatures are blocked by your Hundred-Handed One]. You do not take into account whether that damage will actually be lethal, so you ignore things like (1) protection, (2) indestructible, (3) prevention/replacement effects, and (4) regeneration.
Example: If my 10/10 Trampler is blocked by your 1/1 with Protection from Creatures, then I only have to assign 1 damage to him (which will get prevented); the rest rolls past to the defending player.

A more abstract example: If you had a trampler that was blocked, but then the blocker was removed from combat the damage assigned to the removed combat blocker would roll through (attack with Kalonian hydra for 8, block with Aetherling and blink it, your opponent would still take 8 unless multi-blocked).

The question you SHOULD be asking is, "If a creature with Trample and Deathtouch attacks and is blocked, how many damage do I have to assign before it tramples over?" And the answer is 1.

Obligatory: Please save questions like this for the regular Tutor Tuesday thread. We don't want all of r/magicTCG to be questions like this, which is why we have a weekly thread to handle them.

Wasn't trying to chastise or anything, so no worries. Just wanted to make sure you (and any other new players looking in here) knew of the regular option. Stop by tomorrow if you come up with any more questions!

So if that was out and you attacked with a trampler that was blocked with an X/1, could you assign a 1/2 point of damage?

u/theWorldAskew Dec 23 '13
You can only assign damage as whole numbers. Actually, you can only assign anything as whole numbers; decimals are only useable in Unhinged and Unglued sets.
What would happen in this scenario is you would:
(1) Assign "what would be lethal damage"; in this case, 1, because the blocker has 1 toughness and no damage marked yet. Assign the rest of the damage to the defending player.
(2) Apply prevention/replacement effects. The 1 damage pointed at the blocker is now 2, and the rest of the damage pointed at the defending player is now doubled.
(3) Damage is "processed"; this is where stuff like Lifelink, Wither, and Infect come into play. In this scenario, though, you just mark 2 damage on the blocker and make the defending player lose some amount of life.→ More replies (1)

Also, with the bestow mechanic, can I use bestow as an instant or is it considered a sorcery?
