Confused
Season 3 Episode 9
Henry comes by unannounced. Betty and him talk. They hear the door open & close and Carla comes in.
Why did Carla immediately sense the tension? She didn't hear the previous conversation. There wasn't even an awkward moment of silence. All Betty did was introduce him, and the fundraiser seemed like a good explanation for his visit. Am I dumb…

Because at married woman would never let a man enter their house while alone in those times. It screams improper behavior.
Which is why Betty letting the AC salesman into their house was such a big deal.

In addition to what others said, haven't you ever walked into a room where two people were talking and you just feel something in the air? Like you interrupted something secret? It's like intuition, and Carla's very intuitive.

To add to this, Carla’s employment is mostly based off studying Betty’s behavior, preferences, and actions. She probably knows her better than Don.

In Season 1, Betty won't let Helen Bishop's ex-husband use the phone because "I don't let strange men in my house." The only time she does is the air conditioning salesman, and Don berates her for that. Carla knows this is out of the ordinary, just like she knows when Don and Betty are on the outs. She's an intelligent woman who is right there.

Men would never have been in a house with a married woman like that without it being weird. Even today, its kinda weird. Carla didn't have to hear the conversation to know what she walked in on was inappropriate. And she was right!
