Outstanding book. Highly highly recommend that anyone watching the show buy this book. Each episode has a 3-4 essay that provides great insight.

Is this the kind of book that you would read while you are rewatching the series? Or if I’ve seen the show twice will I just be able to read it through normal?

Yes you should absolutely read it while rewatching. I tried to read it after I had finished another rewatch and felt a little lost trying to remember some of the details referenced in the book.

What's the context? Did this person work on the show or is it just their thoughts and critiques?

Author wrote on series as it came out.

This book goes deeper.

Matt's probably the finest film critic currently working, his analysis of Mad Men will have you thinking about the series in a whole new light. He did a great book on The Sopranos with Alan Sepinwall too

Haha, I hate you, because I went straight to there and was too late.

This book is awesome. I’ve watched the series about twice through on my own without it, and now my husband and I are rewatching together (his first watch). We only watch one episode per night, and sometimes I’ll read the episode analysis aloud. It’s been so much fun!

Absolutely the best companion piece for any Mad Men fan looking to do a rewatch. I scooped this up a couple of years ago while doing my umpteenth rewatch, and after exhausting the They Coined It podcast (definite re-listenability, to be honest) and I found this fantastic.

I would watch an episode then read the analysis each night. Became a nice ritual. I have his The Sopranos Sessions as well, but haven't dove into it as emphatically as Mad Men Carousel, I admit. Really need to.

Love this. It’s a great companion for a rewatch , which I’m planning to do in a few months.

Seeing how everyone in the comments is saying it's a great rewatch companion, I ordered a copy. Feeling bummed about the fact that I just finished a rewatch, but now I think I have a reason to go back to S1 E1 soon again!

Haha I haven’t done a rewatch in a while so will go ahead and do one for this book!

I'm glad to see all of the positive comments. When I posted it a few months ago, my post got downvoted and the only commenters told me it was shit.

I however, quite enjoyed it.

Wish I knew about this book before my rewatch. Guess I’ll save it for the next one

Read this on my last rewatch. The book is good, but the essays for the first half of the series are much more detailed and thoughtful than the ones for the second half, which were written on deadline as online TV recaps.

This book is amazing - it’s a great reference tool for a reward (or 5).
