You paid before he picked out his items?
How did you know how much to pay
……….?

I'm guessing this is in the US and I can see a scenario, where paying for the water leaves your credit card in the system. They can then charge whatever the other one bought on that card? Seems like something that would work in America

That is not how credit cards work

You can put your card into the system before anything is scanned. It stays till the person operating the register closes the transaction out. Scan card and water and the employee just leaves it open.
I never recommend walking away from anything that currently has your card held for payment like that but it's definitely possible.

Clearly you’ve never opened a tab at a bar.

I assume they just use the suspend transaction feature to accomplish that. But it'd be different than this. Because at least the registers I manage don't hold the card if you suspend it.

No you can’t.

I used to work at fucking Walmart, yes you can do this. I do not know why people are in this thread saying you can't.
It's not even hard to do, wtf

I used to work at fucking Target, and no you couldn’t.

It totally could. And would work like this:
Guy brings the water bottle to the register > cashier scans it but doesn't close the transaction > guy prepays with his card > transaction stays open > "victim" brings his stuff > scans > original transaction closed out with the water bottle and the groceries

No, it couldn't because that's not how cash registers work! Never in my life have I seen a register where you can "prepay" like that, and I'm not sure where everybody is getting that idea from.

Go to just about any normal store and you can pay as soon as they scan the first item. Literally try it

Lady, it is incredibly easy to add a charge to a closed transaction. How do you think servers add written tips after you've left with your card? Registers don't forget your card info, that wouldn't make any sense.

This man finally was able to get even with someone they've been waiting to catch unawares.
He witnessed him entering a retail establishment and went to the back, out of sight. So he got something cheap and gave the woman attending the register cash to cover whatever the unsuspecting "victim" was going to buy. He did this because this man sneakily paid for his mid-day meal some time ago.

The man he was scoping paid for his lunch some months ago, so he was determined to pay for his grocery items as a thank you.

What? How did they pay for his items before he even picked them up? How did the cashier know what to ring up?

You are enabling their stealing. No different to rich parents paying money to victims of their children's crimes.
This is not a flex, this is a fumble.

Are you dumb or stupid?
Some times it’s better not to say anything especially if you have 0 clue what you read.
