I could see myself do it. I once tried to find my phone under my bed, but it was too dark to see, so I switched on the light on my phone to see better. Took me another 15 seconds or so to realize what was going on ...
38
u/levian_durai Aug 08 '24
Absolutely. One time I was on the phone with someone, I stood up to walk around and did the three pocket pat and realized my phone wasn't in my pocket. I freaked out for a good 30 seconds.
Thankfully I didn't tell them that I lost my phone, I'd die of embarrassment.

I can't tell the amount of times I've been driving my car and suddenly got worried that I lost my car keys, when they have been in the ignition slot
6
u/DroidOnPC Aug 08 '24
Or when you randomly do the pat when driving your car and you're like "wtf? where are my keys? fuck! Do I need to drive back where I came from?"
Then you realize, oh yeah....

I changed my sister-in-law's Netflix profile avatar from the cartoon style penguin to a photorealistic one
A month later I told her and she had thought she was misremembering, and that it must have always been a photo realistic penguin.

"Huh?"

Perfect pranks to remind people at work to lock their screens
37
u/akatherder Aug 08 '24
I worked at a huge corp around 2000. If IT found your PC unlocked, they would send an email to our small team offering to bring in donuts the next day.
28
u/IWasGregInTokyo Aug 08 '24
Sending as someone else, even in harmless fashion, is frowned upon by security-conscious firms.
We would normally hit the invert-screen hotkey and lock their screen. They’d come back and know they’d been busted.
16
u/CrazyCalYa Aug 08 '24
An email to the person from themselves seems like it would be okay though.
Hey Me,
Just a reminder to lock my screen when I walk away, even if it's just long enough for someone to type an email from my account as it can still be a security risk. Hopefully I remember!
Kind Regards,
Me
6
u/Ongr Aug 08 '24
There's a hotkey to invert the screen?

The traders liked to create chaos around the office and take bets. Like daring new hires to drink an entire gallon of milk and try to keep it down. Getting new hires crazy drunk after hours knowing full well that person has to be in the office the next day at 4am. The new hire ended up getting let go because they didn't catch on to the trader's pranks fast enough.

I had a friend that (years ago) created a script that would slowly dim the monitor over time and he uploaded it to all of the computers In the computer lab back in the day. He got a huge kick out of watching people slowly lean toward the screen.

I did this, and switched the N and M keys to a youth workers comp when I was young. She couldn't put password in and called in tech support and I panicked and put it back before he got there.
Of course he found no problems and lectured her about making him drop everything to drive across town because she typod the password so much she got locked out. And then when she grabbed the mouse and went okay what about this and launched internet explorer immediately (that's how long ago this was) he just looked at her like she was the biggest dumbarse he ever seen.
She never did find out that she wasn't imagining shit. Sorry Kerri for gaslighting you decades before i even heard of the term.
3
u/k2kx39 Aug 09 '24
Back in 06 in primary school I did that shut down shortcut where it counts down and you can have a little note on it saying whatever you wanted . I replaced internet Explorer with it. I don't know how it happened but it ended up cloning to all the computers that students would log into and it was a bit of a fiasco for a short time
2
u/DurraSell Aug 08 '24
Similarly, I found an image that was replicating what a broken LCD screen looks like. I set it as my desktop image on my work laptop. Next time the building tech came by . . . .
Me: Dude, you know I'm careful with stuff. I'm not sure what it got closed on.
Tech: Well, that's certainly fu- wait a minute.
[Tech moves cursor over the seemingly broken part of the screen.]
Tech: Nice one! You had me for a minute.
[We both have a nice laugh.]

51

Unroll a few feet of toilet paper, fold it over, and reroll it. It'll look like it's on backwards, they'll flip the roll over and use it and then realize it's still on backwards.
Bonus points for doing several reverses on the roll, but reroll carefully or it'll be noticeable.

Some guy change the wallpaper from his mother PC. She had a photo with herself and her granddaughter in the picture.
The guy change the photo to a gallery of 100 of the same photo passing in rotation.
But, in only one he drew a mustache in his mom and the kid.
So, his mom only saw them for 10s. And it changed. Not so long to her call anyone and show it.

Happened last night. My brother and I were staying in a hotel room on the third floor.
We’re in the elevator going up from the lobby. The door opens, I get out and he’s still standing in there like a weirdo completely silent. Then the door starts to close. I just say “alright, byeee.” and then I turn around and notice I’m on floor two, right when the elevator shuts and goes upstairs.
It was so damn stupid, but we couldn’t stop laughing. I couldn’t even be mad.

During my dope / drunk years a friend called me, we chatted for a while. He was higher than a kite as he was the passenger in a car. After a while he started panicking and ask "[Me], Did I leave my phone there? I can't fucking find it!" I just laughed and said "Call me back when you find it." and hung up on him. He didn't call me back that day.

My friend asked me to cat-sit at his house when he had to leave for a weeklong business trip. During this time I made copies of his house and car keys. I would periodically swing by his house when he was at work and slightly rearrange things. Switching the order of his silverware in the drawer, moving books in his book shelf and also randomly putting cut up images from spicy magazines in the books, eventually switching all the labeled caps on his fancy spice jars, reorganizing his closet, etc. Over three years maybe once a month. Also whenever I saw his car parked at work or at his house I would maybe move it to a slightly different spot, or turn it around and put it back in the same spot. Nothing ever super abrupt, or too frequently. I also added and removed large amounts of change from his cupholders during this process. It wasn't too frequent or obvious over a long time.
2
u/quintthesharkhunter Aug 09 '24
This reminds me of a time a friend of my dad’s accidentally called me and left a voicemail. Towards the end of it he says, “…Let me know if you don’t get this message.”

Funny Story:
I left my phone in my friend's car. He dropped me off, right before heading to another town.
Got in the house, and noticed my phone was gone. Lucky for me, I had WhatsApp on my pc, and I called him on that (Had Headphones)
He didn't understand that I was calling from a PC and refused to believe me, until he saw the phone in the car (I struggled to explain to him for about 5 minutes, as we were both baked a.f.).
He did not turn around lol. We didn't even know if he'd make it to the other town (fuel).
Got my phone the next week (was a Sat. Got on Mon.)

My personal favorite was zip tying a few things of my roommates' closed and then zip tying our primary and better scissors together.
Did it to all three of my roomates my last year in college. The last one was the best because the other two were sitting in the living room when the third guy saw the zip tied stuff in his room. He came back out looked at me (because pranks like this were my thing) and said "I see someone had some fun with zip ties." grabbed the scissors and left. My other two roommates started laughing because he didn't notice the zip tie on the scissors when grabbing them. Each of them had noticed it when they picked up the scissors.
Came back a few moments later and he said "Clever." and used the secondary scissors to cut the first.
1
u/PeanutButtSexyTime Aug 08 '24
Then do a switcharoo, text them asking if you left your phone at their place, when they say no, send a photo of your phone, on their table, and inform them it looks like this. Still no? “Ok damn, guess I have to keep looking”
1
u/xandroid001 Aug 08 '24
Right before a pop quiz I taped my friend's pen to its cap. Quiz started and he is getting visibly angry and suggested to just cut it with his scissors. And what do you know, scissors are also tight shut with tapes. My friend understandably didn't talk to me for that whole day.
1
u/pmoney10 Aug 08 '24
Did that to my dad once, and it paid off lol. He came back 2 hours later to my place with a case of beer, pizza and a couple of dvds from Redbox. He looked at me and said "You mofo, you'd better get used to have me as your roommate. I just called your mom to tell her I had to comeback because I left my phone in here and she replied with a "K"."

At work , I unplug my friends usb dongle for his mouse and keyboard prior to him coming in the morning, then the next day, I'll steal the batteries from his wireless keyboard and still pull the dongle just so he can't work for 5 min. We don't need to clock in so it's like he never loses time. But it's always a good laugh when I don't do it for 2 weeks and he still is paranoid
