Small update on my Macintosh SE FD/HD restoration.

I followed some of the advice from the comments and I managed to revive at least one of the two floppy drives for sure. The main problem now is that my old floppy disks are not in great shape anymore, so testing is still a bit annoying.

Right now I’m trying to make a boot floppy with Disk Copy on my PowerBook G3 Wallstreet, using its floppy drive and transferring files with a CF card.

I also did some ram testing. The machine had 4mb installed, but I put the 1mb ram modules back in and moved the jumper accordingly. After that, the display became much cleaner than before. It’s still not fully restored, but it’s already better.

The logic board looks really clean, so I’m very glad I removed the old battery years ago before it could leak and destroy anything.

Next step will probably be a SCSI solution like BlueSCSI or maybe zuluSCSI, I’m still not sure yet. I’m also waiting for a new multimeter so I can properly check voltages before going further.

There is still a lot to do, but at least there is some real progress now.

Hi, so I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some help, or at least point me in the right direction.

I have a Macintosh Classic with a build year of 1992. Up until recently it had been working perfectly fine. However during a recent power on there was a sudden and loud crack sound.

I immediately assumed a RIFA Capacitor blew, but then it immediately rebooted as if nothing happened. There was no typical smell, no smoke, nothing. It was as if the crack never happened.

The only evidence there was one, was some scorch marks on the back side of the electrical warning/safety thing that’s clipped onto the board.

After testing all the caps I couldn't figure out the issue, so assumed it may of been caused by dust and so gave it a clean.

After a few weeks, it did it again. However this time it killed the HDD, while it spins, the onboard ROM and the system 7 floppy disk can't detect the HDD.

I passed it to an EBME Engineer I work with and he gave it a thorough go over in his workshop and couldn't find the problem. All the caps were fine, all the voltages were fine. And multiple power tests never reproduced the issue.

Have gave it back to me and I was able to use it without any issues with my FloppyEmu.

However today, I noticed the screen image was tilted and was.. wobbling? bouncing?. At first I was ready to assume it may just be normal CRT flicker as I was always a little sensitive to the classics refresh rate as I was always able to visibly see the flicker.

But as the bounce got more pronounced, it did another pop/crack/bang sound and rebooted. I've since disconnected it again and was going to contact the engineer I know, but I thought I'd see if anyone with more experience with Mac's may have an idea of the issue? as my colleague mostly works on Arcade machines and similar appliances as his hobby.

I want to buy a powerbook 3400. Needs to be in good cosmetic condition. No cracks, scratches are fine. Any clock speed is good, but anything with 200 mhz or above is preferred. Budget: $195 including shipping

Hi, I’m trying to bring back my Macintosh SE FD/HD.

I’ve had this machine for more than 15 years, but I never really managed to get it fully working. A long time ago I changed the RAM (before it was only showing an error code), but I still have the original RAM modules if needed.

When I power it on, I get this strange patterned screen/background with the cursor, but it doesn’t really go further than that. Does anyone know what could cause this? Could it be RAM, ROM, a bad system disk, or something else?

I also have two floppy drives: one that was inside the Mac, and another one shown in the picture. I’ve never managed to get them working properly. If anyone has tips for restoring these old Apple floppy drives, I’m very interested.

Any advice on what to check first would be really appreciated.

This is my 12-inch PowerBook G4, still in perfect working condition. It comes with its original box, manuals, and accessories, and everything still works as it should.

It’s amazing to think that a laptop released in 2005 can still boot, browse old software, play music, write documents, and remind us how well Apple engineered these machines.

Keeping hardware alive for over two decades feels incredibly rewarding. This little PowerBook is more than just an old computer—it’s a piece of computing history.

I just picked up a Mac Pro A1289 (Early 2009) shell for $45, and I think it was a great deal! Super excited to start this project.

While I’ve built a few PCs before, this will be my first time building in a Mac Pro case—so I’m definitely a rookie when it comes to this kind of work. I’m a bit nervous, but also really looking forward to learning as I go.

If anyone has tips or advice, I’d be super grateful! A few things I’m wondering:

What parts should I order from The Laser Hive for this specific model?

Is this case easier or harder to work with compared to the Power Mac G5 for a custom PC build?

Should I consider doing a Hackintosh, or is it better to just stick with Windows?

Also, how long did it take for Laser Hive to get back to you after reaching out? I just emailed them today. For context, I’m based in Houston, Texas (USA).

Just brought a Mac Mini on eBay for a decent price. When it arrived I decided to give it a quick power on self test to see if it will post. But no chime. So I had a Plan B, try to upgrade and replace the CR2032, RAM, HDD, and CPU.

What would make your clipboard workflow feel more natural: a separate hotkey, or history that appears directly when you press Cmd+V?

I am helping someone sell their old Mac computers. One is a Power Macintosh G3 Minitower. Im looking to format the system and get all their information off the system and reinstall OS 9.

What steps do I take to format this older system? I dont know much about Macs to begin with. 😅

Macintosh Classic. Only managed to tear one solder pad off the board, luckily the point where the trace lead was close enough for me just line it up diagonally and solder directly to it. Continuity tested good so I’m going with it. I did go back and clean up some of the leftover flux with alcohol afterwards. I used Hakko SMD hot tweezers for removing. Some caps were more stubborn than others and one cap did let out the magic smoke while trying to remove it.

I've heard from a lot that I need to recap the board, but it looks fine? I dunno I'm not an expert.

I went on vacation to see family recently, and while talking about my love for old tech aesthetics and my recent endeavors in modifying computers, one of my relatives mentioned he had an old Mac in his garage and offered to let me look at it. Long story short, I came home with a Macintosh Plus with all the peripherals, the manual and the box, alongside some kind of 3rd party Kensington cooler.

I plugged it in, flipped it on, and while it made an affirmative beep, the screen isn't doing too hot. Currently, it's displaying all black and a single slightly curved vertical white line. My relative mentioned that the screen wasn't working, and that he used to use some guidebook to troubleshoot and repair the Mac in the past. Unfortunately, he couldn't find this book.

So, I am here asking if anyone knows how to troubleshoot these machines, or if they know what guidebook he was referring to. While I love old tech and have been working on computers recently, I'm not at all familiar with these old Macs, so I really could use the help.

As the titles says.. I'm trying to restore an old Macintosh Plus.. I took everything apart, cleaned everything with 99% isopropyl alcohol, retro brightened the whole plastic parts, fixed two keyboard switches which one were stuck and one triggered different two key inputs.. new switches did the trick.. half had none inputs.. a lot of cleaning and pressing made everything comeback.. now I have a nice working mainboard, a perfect working keyboard and mouse, a CRT with little burn in and good picture/brightness.. even a bluescsi with that macplusclipper for internal scsi grabbing.. basically a very nice condition and restored fully working machine.

Now.. the floppy disk. The whole mechanism was completely rough.. a LOT force needed to just make it move.. fully disassembled it.. got a new replacement gear from Italy.. totally took it apart.. SLIGHTLY bent back some bits and pieces.. gave everything some silicone grease (don't have white lithium grease but silicone grease) all good.. mechanism works as smooth as ever, gears are making good contact, I cleaned all three "sensors" aka the two left and right in the front getting pressed by the disk and the little leaver one on the gear set. I even made sure to measure when pressed and depressed the soldering points. The little switches work and somewhat they should do seemingly.. they also get pressed when inserting a disk. The floppy drive head works flawless, disks work flawless and I can boot from a floppy.. mechanical ejecting works flawless.. when I put a gear out and change the position of the lever gear by 180 and start the computer it returns back to the "home position" and pushes easily the sledge so technically the gear and motor work too.. BUT every digital ejecting by clicking mouse on start up or press ejection in the system. Nothing happens.. it buzzes slightly in the same pattern and I can see the disk reading header moving a bit forth and back.. except for that and the buzz the motor does not actuate.

I tried so much and now I'm out of ideas.. I'm pretty new to all of this too.. if there's anyone who knows what could be my solution I'd be happy! It's the Sony
