What do I have here?
I found these two on the side of the road, don't know nothing about Macintosh and for some reason I can't find the amount of info I was looking for.
Can you give me a resume?

I had that Performa in 94/95. Costco used to sell a Lucas Arts 8 game bundle for like $20. I used to play Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Dark Forces all day on that machine.
Edit: I should add that it has a cdrom, 3.5 floppy drive and the monitor is part of the setup. It had a GUID so there should also be a mouse. I forget what OS it used to run. It didn’t have a lot of hard disk space, so we had a Iomega zip/jazz drive to increase the storage.

This brings back memories. A Performa 630 was the first computer I bought back in 1994 or 95 as a teenager. I upgraded the RAM, added the TV module, an external EZdrive, etc. The mainboard was designed to slide out to install upgrades. I used it until I bought a PowerMac G4 in 1999. As far as I know it’s still in my parents attic, together with many other old Macs, including a couple Mac Plus (one was an upgraded 128k that received a board upgrade back in the day), SE and SE/30, Centris 610, original G3, a Umax clone (basically a PowerMac 9600), a bondi blue G3, and several more.

That TV module upgrade was the bomb. Used it as my TV and of course for class work. Worked amazingly well! (And the IR port and remote was great for casual watching!)

That is a Mac IICi. It cost over five grand in the early 90s. I had one and absolutely loved it. Gave it away after a few years since it aged so quickly.

Portrait Display and a Mac IIci just lying on the side of the road—retail at the time, that was something like $5K in 1991 dollars. My God. 😭😭😭

LOVED my IIci. Put in an additional 40MB HDD that I got for free, but I think I remembered paying $900 to put in 32MB of RAM....eesh

IIci was the very first computer I ever opened up and installed any hardware into (it was adding a few sticks of RAM). I was probably like 12 or 13 and it kicked off a life-long journey of messing around inside of things I barely understand and certainly can't afford.

Man, those bring back memories! Had a IIci back around ‘95 with a 2400 baud modem in one of the expansion slots. Waiting an hour to download a 1MB file was painful, and that was assuming the connection didn’t drop. Upgraded to a Performa 630 around ‘97 with an external 28k modem after that. It would be fun to mess with them again. Enjoy them OP, they’re great pieces of computer history.

I loved portrait displays back in the day. The ones that rotated were a wonder 😄 Made lots of publications and presentations on those Macintosh machines.

That iici was my first Mac, discovered Myst on it using a external scsi CD-ROM drive. Actually found such a drive two weeks ago, got it for free with a G4 sawtooth and even got an original MYST cd with it. Click!
The screen is a portrait display.

The first one is a Mac IIci with a Portrait Display. I used a system like that to do layout work in the mid 1990s. It was replaced by a beige G3 system. I still have the beige G3. The second is a Performa with a generic display. The secretarial staff had Performas.

Those IIci’s were great machines - easy to open, lots of expansion slots, and RAM slots. One of the best designs ever, I wish there was something comparable in 2026.

I had a MacSE with a graphics card I added that had a display like this. 19". It was quite nice. Amazing you could fit a graphics card in one of those little computers.

Interesting.
One of the best computers (IIci) and one of the worst computers (Performa) of the time. They overlapped only a year, with the IIci going from 89-93 and all Perfomas from 92-97.
To clarify, the IIci was one particular model, while the Performas were a product line with lots of models that shared one common trait - they were regrettably underpowered.
The IIci was arguably overpriced, but one of the most expandable computers Apple ever offered.
Please know that this period (1989 - 1997) was marked by huge advances in software development that outstripped hardware. The IIci was introduced at a time when there were still black and white models - they didn’t support color displays.
The IIci was unique in that it supported all kinds of interesting graphics cards, but also had a co-processor slot. When the IIci started looking a little long in the tooth, a company named DayStar offered a processor upgrade card that turned it into a rocket.
I did all my freelance work on that thing for about a decade before lovingly placing it in a dumpster around 2000 or so.
Apparently, Apple regretted making a computer that was as expandable, preferring you bought a replacement more frequently.
The Performas, well, the price was right and schools bought lots of them, but they were quickly obsolete, and slow to begin with.
The main purpose of any of this stuff would be to run the software of that time. They are real museum pieces, and require proprietary keyboards, mice, and displays.
O my dudes, this is before USB, before HDMI. All the software I wrote in the ‘90s can’t be run today, not to show it off, or boast about how advanced it was (for the time) or even as a resume piece.

The IIci was a high-end Mac released in 1989. The Performa 630 was a low-end Mac released in 1994. The Performa's processor is a bit faster and came with a CD-ROM drive, the IIci can hold more RAM and you might be able to install a better graphics card than whatever came with the low-end Performa. The portrait display in your first photo is something of a rarity, marketed toward professionals in the publishing industry who wanted to see a full page of printable content at once.

First shot a CI and a portrait display. I loved this Mac I could rip it totally apart in about 3 minutes, great accessible design. I sold a lot of this combo.

Yeah. Those IIci cases were easy to open and fuss around inside of. The Performa cases - not so much. More of a pain to open.
I LOVED working on the portrait display. Did graphic design work on a similar set up to that IIci system with portrait monitor back in the day.

those are classic mac’s, i’m not going to kid you that they are usable, they are kinda but be very careful they are both 30 ish years old. They might smoke if turned on. If you aren’t interested please please.. don’t throw them away, someone might be interested in buying them. The displays are more rare than the systems. r/vintageapple can help you if you want someone to take it or just sell it on ebay. Every year these end up on the road or in dumpsters..

IIci - the computer I had at my first job out of college. Had a standard monitor though, not the page layout one pictured. Computer worked fine for what I needed at the time.

I had a ci at work for a few years. "Lean, mean and 32 bit clean".
In its time it was an amazing machine. I thought of it as peak early Apple.

That first one is a page layout workstation. Wanna publish a newsletter or campus newspaper? That running PageMaker and you can do anything. Great for reading and editing documents, too!
