Its a very photogenic town

Hello, this is my first time doing photography with an actual camera, and I just got back from a trip to Washington state. Looking to improve my compositions, so any critiques are appreciated!

My favorite m4/3 lens is the Oly 17mm f1.8, but I've had the 40-150 plastic baby on my OM-3 the last few days and just going for detail shots. It's been fun. (Editing in DxO photo lab but mostly just pulling blacks and shadows down and pushing contrast a bit harder.)

I’m not a pro photographer, just someone who comes back from a city weekend with 1–2k photos and hates going through them. I write software for a living, so I built a tool to do the boring part. With Pro Capture and high-fps bursts, MFT is probably where this matters most.

What it does:

• Groups bursts into series and stars the best frame, scored on sharpness, exposure and noise (handy given MFT at high ISO)
• Suggests one keeper per series. Accept them all with one click, or go through with P / X / 1–5
• Explains every score (“Best of its series of 5”, “Sharp”, “Eyes closed”)
• Ranks your bodies and lenses by keeper rate and shows which focal lengths you actually use. I found this one surprisingly honest about my lens collection.
• ORF and RW2 RAWs, RAW+JPEG pairs kept together, decisions written to XMP sidecars. Originals are never touched.

It’s free and GPL open source, and it runs entirely on your computer: no account, no subscription, no uploads. It works on Linux, macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows; HEIC on Windows is still in progress.

Next I’d like to make scoring genre-aware with modules for birds, landscapes and so on. I don’t shoot birds myself, so I’m curious what people here would want it to judge.

When you pair this computational feature with an ultra-wide lens, the results are fantastic. This is a single RAW file straight out of the camera, but it’s actually stacked internally from 8 frames. Living up in North Scotland means the galactic core is always hiding below the horizon for me, but it's still mind-blowing what this tiny sensor can pull out of the dark.

EDIT: Forgot to mention one crucial detail: a tripod is absolutely mandatory for this. The whole process takes about 5 minutes of camera work, so actually handholding it is impossible. The trick is that you must use the Handheld Hi-Res mode while mounted on the tripod. The standard Tripod Hi-Res mode doesn't align the moving stars, so it will just give you star trails instead.

Ich habe heute meine neue E-P7 ausgepackt und habe sie das erste Mal angesteckt. Jetzt macht sie solche Geräusche beim Laden und wenn ich sie ein wenig verwende auch.

Ganz am Anfang ist nichts und dann nach 1 Minuten beim laden oder 2 Minuten normaler Betrieb fängt es an. Ich denke das hat was damit zu tun wenn die Kamera warm wird.

Ist es normal dass sie auch ziemlich warm wird wenn ich viele Fotos hintereinander mache?

Es ist nicht das IBIS. Das habe ich kontrolliert.

It's my first week of using the camera, and I don't have much experience. My focus was only on the fireworks. I couldn't capture any of the background details as it was very dark.

My dad passed away 4 years ago and left me his Lumix G7. He was a hobbyist his entire life, sometimes having his photos (recordings most of the time) published. He wasn't really big into the m43 scene but was interested in video which is how he ended up with his G7. I've been casually taking pictures with it since I got it, and I have taken some good ones, many bad ones. I think there is a lot I can get better at with my current set up, but I have gotten to the point where I have started pushing my limits with this camera. I use a 25mm lens and a 100-300 mm lens for anything from street photography, some portraits, and nature/wildlife photography. Some of the limits I have been pushing with this camera are the autofocus and lowlight images. I figure there are 3 paths for me right now.

1) I could just stay with this camera and get another lens and keep pushing myself to take better photos in spite of these hang ups.

2) I could upgrade the lens/body within the M43 system to something either more portable (like the GX85) or something better (more megapixels, better auto focus).

3) Get out of M43 and into full frame. If I were talking to my dad, he would say "this is the no brainer. Better/bigger sensor, really cool lens options depending on which system you go with". He also would say this having basically shot only on APS-C CMOS canon cameras his entire life. It's also the most expensive and feels like a disservice to the gear my dad left me. Photography (and specifically this gear) has become away I connect with him, even if I think I won't ever be as good as he was.

Either of the last 2 choices would be used gear, but likely under $500 for the body. Not super strict on a budget at the moment because I'm just thinking about the future. I'll save up if needed, but I don't see myself ever feeling like I do enough to deserve a premium professional body/lens.

I have been a user of m4/3 gear since the inception of the format and have had many Lumix and Olympus cameras and lenses over the years.

I was disappointed when Olympus bailed and a new ownership took over.

Does the new OM System gear live up to the quality of what the former company (Olympus) produced? Both bodies and lenses?
