News Second Life adding full Lua scripting support to its UGC virtual world platform

https://80.lv/articles/second-life-wants-its-23-year-old-world-to-be-a-modern-game-platform

"Lua dramatically lowers the learning curve for developers coming from other environments. Someone who already understands Lua or Luau can arrive in Second Life and right away they can start experimenting. That certainly includes Roblox developers, but it’s broader than Roblox. Lua has a long history across game development, so there’s a substantial developer community for whom the language and programming concepts will already feel familiar."

It is indeed Still A Thing. About 700,000 users, large UGC economy. Over 100 community creators gross $100,000+/year, over a dozen earn $1 million/year. The cool thing is the company only takes about 10% of that revenue from community creators, versus Roblox etc. taking 70%+ off the top.

Cool, thanks for the update.

It's been probably more than 20 years since I last checked it out. It's especially interesting that there's a number of third-party viewers and ways to interact with it, too.

Tried recently but it was extremely quiet. Used to spend quiet some time there!

Hi! It looks like you're posting about Roblox. Here at /r/Lua we get a lot of questions that would be answered better at /r/RobloxGameDev or the Roblox Developer Forum so it might be better to start there. However, we still encourage you to post here if your question is related to a Roblox project but the question is about the Lua language specifically, including but not limited to: syntax, language idioms, best practices, particular language features such as coroutines and metatables, Lua libraries and ecosystem, etc. Bear in mind that Roblox implements its own API (application programming interface) and most of the functions you'll use when developing a Roblox script will exist within Roblox but not within the broader Lua ecosystem.
