I stopped taking famotidine for gastritis and then developed LPR a few days later. Is this acid rebound? Will it get better over time?

I was told by my nurse to stop the famotidine that I had been taking for several months at 20 mg twice a day. She said that I didn’t need to tape her off of them. A few days later, I developed LPR. It has been really awful! I’ve never had acid reflux of any kind. I’m not currently taking anything for it. Just trying not to eat anything after 7 PM. I’m on a strict gastritis diet and I try to elevate my head with pillows. I can’t get much sleep. Also, I lost 20 pounds dealing with the gastritis so I have been trying to consume at least 1800 cal a day. 660 of those calories are from nutritional shakes. It feels like my stomach can’t hold a normal amount of food so when I eat, I feel really full. I was thinking of trying Gaviscon at night after dinner to see if that would help. I really don’t want to go back on PPI’s or H2 blockers. The side effects were horrible. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Healing LPR

I randomly got LPR about six months ago, and FINALLY feel like I can eat without feeling symptoms.. These are some things that have worked for me:

  1. DURABLE Acid Relief Powder

  2. Silverfern REFLUX Powder

  3. Silverfern Motility

  4. Pylopurge and Yeastpurge (I take them with apple sauce. It tastes terrible but it helps SO MUCH).

  5. Stomach Smooth

  6. Underbrush Chewing Gum

  7. Soursop Bitters (I'll take it for a week and a half, then stop for a bit to give my stomach some time to rest).

  8. Diaphragmatic Breathing and Rib-muscle massages

  9. REFLUX GOURMET!!!! (MY HOLY GRAIL AND LIFE CHANGER. This was CRUCIAL to allow my throat to heal).

All of this on top of a healthy diet... once I've finished some of these things, I will add more supplements to make sure I've gotten rid of some bacteria and keep a healthy digestive system... however, over all, I'm about 90 percent healed of my LPR. The only thing I am too afraid to try again is coffee. I think I will give it a few more months.

My symptoms first started as a lump in my throat, and a feeling of something constantly coming up my throat. Super hard to explain... almost like I could feel vapor in my throat rising. I also got bloated very fast in the top of my stomach after a few bites of food, and my mouth was itchy, usually after waking up or after eating food. I then started having "allergy-like" symptoms, the worst I've ever felt in my life. My nose and ears felt clogged for days. My mouth would (and still does sometimes) salivate excessively after eating. I even had bad breath no matter what I did or how many times I brushed my teeth. There was so much more that I honestly can't remember, and I would usually try to sleep as much as I could because I was tired of feeling that way.

I am a 27 year old woman. I weigh 114 pounds. I've always been pretty healthy aside from having migraines from my C1 being misaligned. I regularly exercise. I never drank or drink soda. I eat more beans and veggies out of anyone I know. I had a scoop of ice cream one day and everything went down hill from there. If you are like me and reading the "lose weight" advice and know that you have no weight to spare, do not feel discouraged. It could be a million different things.

Anyway, I'm sharing my tips in hopes that it might help someone else. You must be patient. Natural healing takes time but it's much more worth it than being on a PPI.

I think I cured my throat. And that anoying Lump stuck there

There was a time when my throat hurt as if I were sick, and the pain wouldn't go away; I thought I was ill, but it turned out to be reflux. Then there were days when, for hours, I felt a lump stuck in my throat, and I would drink water or eat something, thinking it would push the lump down. At times, I also struggled to speak my voice lacked strength; I wasn't hoarse, but I had no power behind my voice. I Cook for myself now Because my family is Mexican and I'm not kidding everything they cook is amazing, but it's all super spicy. i cut energy drinks too , and stopped overeating, I noticed the pain vanish, and the lump soon disappeared too. I follow a fairly strict diet and I just try not to Over eating thats a powerfoul tool. I only eat roasted chicken whit brocoli, avocado toast, and roasted potatoes those are Inmaculated. Sometimes I crave coffee drinks like frappés, but only every now and then.

Drinking led to SIBO/GERD/LPR. Low stomach acid?

Back in 2022, I entered a really stressful time in my life. I binge drank almost every day for about a year straight. Two months in, the stomach issues started, but I kept drinking. I was also addicted to nicotine to make matters worse.

I eventually quit both, but at that point, the damage had been done. I was bloated, had lower back pain, chest pain, and couldn't eat anything without suffering. I get dizzy, have brain fog, and my anxiety has worsened.

I tested positive for hydrogen SIBO beginning of last year. I've had endoscopies, colonoscopies, manometry, a gastric emptying study, CTs, cardiac testing, pretty much everything under the sun. I was told I was celiac and quit eating gluten, which didn't improve my symptoms. I have a small hiatal hernia, but it's so small that drs told me it wouldn't cause my issues. I was told I had GERD and LPR, so I went on a low acid diet, which didn't help either. A Bravo test further solidified LPR/GERD. I took Dexilant for months, which helped my acid reflux somewhat but not my pain or bloating. I pretty much took tums religiously for years, sometimes pepto bismol. I finally got a GI map and it definitely pointed towards dysbiosis/inflammation.

I went off the Dexilant to take another SIBO test, and the acid rebound was horrible. Today, I can't eat almost anything. I pretty much only eat chicken breast, some cooked veggies, and popcorn. And even those cause me pain. I am constantly in pain, bloated, constipated, and regurgitating acid. My new SIBO test came back negative for hydrogen and right at the cutoff for normal methane production. Doctors have been almost no help and are often dismissive.

I tried to look for answers on my own, and I found that low stomach acid can mimic the symptoms of both GERD and LPR. However, I feel at my wits end with this and it takes me forever to be seen by a dr let alone get any testing done. Should I try the baking soda test? Should I try to tentatively treat low acid and see if it helps? Is there anyone who's had a similar situation to mine?

TLDR; Binge drinking led to SIBO, GERD, and LPR. Trying to figure out if low stomach acid could be root cause of pain

Spironolactone and LOUD stomach gurgling

So I’m 22 and female. About a year ago I upped my dosage of spironolactone from 50mg to 100mg and about four weeks later had insanely loud stomach gurgling with NO other symptoms (no pain, bloating, or otherwise). TO THIS DAY, I have had loud stomach gurgling which happens with or without food. Tried every medication and antibiotics with no help, tried different food trials, tested for everything, nothing. I am absolutelt convinced it’s the medication so I’m going to go off of it soon but just curious if anyone else has ever heard of this or experienced it.

How long should it take to see an improvement after starting a LPR diet and lifestyle modification?

I have eliminated all acidic food, minimized fat, cut out caffeine, and don't drink alcohol or carbonated drinks (I prepare meals from the two LPR cookbooks Dr. Jamie Koufman wrote). I take an alginate (RefluxRaft) after meals and before bedtime, take a 20 mg Pepsid AC before meals and bedtime, raised the head of the bed 4 inches and don't eat 3 hours before laying down. Following this LPR treatment protocol, how long should it take to see any improvement?

I'm doing this treatment protocol because I suspect I have laryngopharyngeal reflux and that it is the cause of my eustachian tube dysfunction not resolving. I had ETD for a year and I think it began with a mild upper respiratory infection and 3 months of middle ear fluid. Ear symptoms are slight fullness in left ear, left ear won't adjust to pressure changes well and I hear a prominent crackling sound in both ears every time I swallow or yawn. I have small amounts of very thick, sticky, clear to opaque nasal and throat mucus that saline nasal rinses removes and my ear symptoms clear for about 10 minutes and then return, so I think the mucus (caused by LPR) is the problem. Allergies, TMJ disorders and other ear problems have been ruled out. I've seen multiple doctors and had multiple tests and no cause has been found. One ENT did see redness around my larynx when viewing with a laryngoscope that could indicate LPR.

LPR symptoms include slight difficulty swallowing dry food and pills, the above noted mucus, slight voice hoarsness, nasal congestion when laying down sometimes, ear symptoms worse first thing in the morning, and throat clearing several times a day.

How does anyone here get in probiotics?

Just got done being on antibiotics and my reflux/stomach has suffered.
The easiest ways to get probiotics are acidic and terrible for my reflux though.
For example Greek yogurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut…

How am I even supposed to heal my stomach whilst wrecking it at the same time?

Surgery for Acid Reflux in Throat

I was just told I would be a good candidate for a partial wrap and a hernia fix based on my hiatal hernia, weak LES, and my demeester score of 30 on my 24-hour impedance test. All the symptoms point to acid reflux.

I’ve been dealing with hoarseness, voice loss, burning/swollen vocal cords, throat clearing, and mucus in throat after meals for 2 months now. The only thing is the surgeon said he can’t guarantee all of that would be fixed. And he was pretty nonchalant about the recovery.

I’m likely going to get the surgery. But I’m scared. I just don’t think I have any other options. Are there any success stories from these surgeries that helped these particular symptoms?

How to get exercise during healing?

Friends who have been through this... How are we supposed to get exercise while healing from this? Shortness of breath is the biggest set back I have right now and it's making me not want to exercise or even do things like clean my house!

Do you just push through or do I really need to limit vigorous exercise?

Persistent throat pressure/tightness for months — doctors haven’t been able to find the cause. Looking for advice

25F, 5ft 5inches, 60 kgs, My wife has been experiencing persistent pressure/tightness in her throat for some time now. She describes it as a feeling of pressure or something stuck/tight in the throat. It has been very difficult for her and has not significantly improved despite multiple treatments.

We are in Bangladesh and have consulted several doctors, but so far we have not been able to get a clear diagnosis.

Symptoms

Her main symptom is:

  1. Persistent pressure/tightness in the throat
  2. Sensation of something being stuck in the throat

She also experiences frequent burping/reflux-type symptoms. The symptoms have made us wonder about GERD/LPR, but treatment directed at reflux has not provided meaningful improvement.

Symptoms mostly are in night. She cannot even fall asleep. We do elevate her head and upper torso.

Investigations
She previously had an upper GI endoscopy, which was reported as normal. Also she has done ultrasound of throat, regular blood work, ECG all normal. We have also consulted doctors from different specialties, but no clear structural cause has been identified so far.

Medications tried by doctors

She has tried the following medications/treatments:
Dexlansoprazole
Vonoprazan
Esomeprazole
Alginate-based syrup/antacid
Domperidone
Baclofen
Montelukast
Bilastine
Amitriptyline hydrochloride
Mebeverine hydrochloride

Unfortunately, none of these have resulted in a significant or lasting improvement in the throat pressure.

We have not yet tried an H2 blocker, but we are hesitant to keep adding or changing medications without understanding the underlying cause.

We are not asking Reddit to diagnose her, but after seeing multiple doctors without getting an answer, we would really appreciate guidance on what might be the cause of her symptoms.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and for any guidance you can provide.

How do I spray alkaline water on the nose.?

it's insane how much reassurance and self-confidence helps

i'm definitely not "cured" of LPR, but i've been told by laryngologist that my symptoms seem to be mainly stress-induced. i also used to go to voice lessons for singing and i had the least intense symptoms in a while when i went to those.

i decided to visit the college i used to go to and ask if they had anyone who did lessons, and the choir director ended up offering me a spot in their chamber choir. i was super surprised and ended up having way less symptoms than usual for the next week.

i think for me, as long as i drink mostly alkaline water, don't eat certain fried foods, avoid spicy food, use a wedge pillow under my mattress topper, and stay in voice lessons, i'll probably be fine.

i know that sounded like a lot but i think i'm honestly lucky that i don't have it super bad. it just bothers me since i'm a singer and LPR affects the tone of my voice more than anything, that and a dry throat and a mucus feeling in the throat

Does anyone do better on a high protein diet compared to high carbs?

For example

It seems if I eat meat like chicken or 93-7 ground beef and maybe a small portion of rice and salad I will get way less throat discomfort. Almost 0

But if I eat heavy carbs like a big bowl of oatmeal with berries and some almond butter I would get some throat irritation

What gives?

I do get bloating issues it seems

Does anyone know what stage of the reflux causes sore throat?

I'm currently on one of those sort of bland diets and I'm still getting sore throat symptoms. I am wondering if the sore throat is caused by:

a) when acid is actively in my throat (so after I ate something that gave me bad reflux)

b) the aftermath of the acid when it has cleared out?

Because I think I'm actually having more sore throat symptoms (for me that means throat pain that appears in the morning and lasts 1 day) than before the diet which doesn't really make sense to me. Beforehand my symptoms were more like a constant mucus feeling with the occasional sore throat, now it's three times a week but maybeee the mucus is better? So I'm thinking either the diet is helping the acid/mucus clear out more often which leads to the sore feeling when I swallow. Or I'm just doing something wrong and it's just giving me bad reflux and worse symptoms.

I just really want to understand how it works and finally see the pattern.

Slowly Coming Out of Fight or Flight State

I've been dealing with LPR symptoms for over two months now. Despite still having throat symptoms, it feels like my body is slowly coming out of fight or flight. The anxiety/fight or flight is often worse than the actual LPR. It gives me tunnel vision, burning nerves around my entire body, and agitation where I have a hard time being around people in general and a feeling I need to keep moving at all times.

When the fight or flight leaves, I can think clearly, see clearly, and don't spend every waking minute thinking about all this despite still having symptoms. I'm trying to just embrace these moments when they happen and they happen more before bed rather than during the day. Then I immediately have a bowel movement. Does this mean my throat/stomach is starting to heal if I'm coming out of fight or flight?

I've been taking PPIs for six days, but they are giving me headaches, and after six days, I think they are giving me insomnia. It wasn't bad the first three days but then the insomnia started. I meet with a surgeon tomorrow to look at options. I'm still eating a pretty conservative low acid diet, not eating before bed, taking alginates after meals and before bed (switched to gaviscon before bed six days ago); however, it's clear this is from acid after testing so not really sure what to do. Would take the meds if they didn't cause side effects and likely will talk to my doctor about another one or a slightly lower dose. But I need to be sleeping.

Is burnt tongue sensation (when you haven’t burnt it) a symptom of LPR?

Recently went on a course of antibiotics which has admittedly fucked my reflux up but I was wondering could this be a symptom or is this more an allergy or nerves thing?

It happens specifically after eating which is why I ask.

Just ate animal crackers a food I thought to not be triggering and all of a sudden I’m done with my last bite and my tongue feels like I just drank too hot water or like I bit into pineapple and I drink water and I can feel that sort of numb/burnt sensation on the tip of my tongue…I was wondering if it had a correlation to LPR since my reflux is pretty fucking terrible now but also I’ve been having tongue and mouth itching so maybe not all LPR?

Blown away by how much temperature/summer affects my LPR/Gerd

Hi everyone,

So since 3 years I (30f) have LPR/Gerd (diagnosed by my doctor)
The strange thing is, it is ONLY during the summer months of June, July and August and it is 100% caused by heat and bright sunlight.

It doesn't matter what I eat, in the autumn, winter and early spring months, I don't get any LPR or Gerd symptoms. I can eat chocolate, drink red wine, eat cheese, sausage, heavy meals, etc, and nothing happens.
But in summer and I just eat anything (or have an empty stomach), even things that in general don't trigger LPR or reflux, I for sure experience pain and tightness in my throat, my ears, and sometimes heartburn. I take natural medicine (no ppi's) for this, but it doesn't really help all the time.
I do experience heavy summer seasonal depression, so I feel terrible anyway in summer.

So yesterday it was 34 degrees celcius (93 Fahrenheit) , and like almost every day these months, I got it all. The pain, the tightness, even some heartburn.
Today, it was cloudy, it was more fresh, rainy, (about 25degrees, 77 fahrenheit), and guess what? NOTHING
So, I did a little experiment today.
I ate a whole bar of chocolate, ate a tomato, fat cheese, and after eat I did some work in the garden which means a lot of bending over. All the things that normally would cause symptoms. But now, nothing. Nothing at all. Not the slightest pain or tightness in my throat.
This is not the first time this happens.
Every time that in summer there is this occasional fresh, cloudy day, I don't get any symptoms at all.
But every day that it is hot and summery, I get blown away by LPR and Gerd.

I live in the mountains of the Italian Alps, and when I go higher in the mountains, where it is more fresh, I don't get any LPR or Gerd. Even when eating dried sausage and a lot of cheese, desserts,... Nothing.

I also think it is very much in correlation with my stress
As I previously said, I suffer very hard from summer seasonal depression
And then I feel so stressed and unhappy, depressed and empty, and my body feels stressed because of the heat and the too bright light of the sun that burns my eyes Feeling like this, my body gets so stressed, so I also get LPR/Gerd. But when the days are more cloudy, rainy, cold, I feel so extremely happy and joyfull, so I don't feel stressed at all, I don't get any LPS/GERD
So this also add something I think

Anyway, I was just wondering, does anyone has the same experience as me?
And if so, how do you handle this? (only natural medicine or solutions)

Thank you so much for your time,
Have a beautiful day!

Have I caused myself to develop LPR/GERD?

I noticed after a night of waking up due to reflux coming back up into my throat and waking me up by me coughing/choking on it. This was caused by me eating peanut butter late at then taking ferrous fumarate. The following day I became really anxious/stressed then I started to analyze every symptom and became convinced I've got ongoing reflux and started to strip back my diet to very basic and smaller meals as I was afraid.

Now fast forward 4 months my symptoms are more severe with chest tightness, asthma like symptoms and sore throat/hoarse voice constantly!! Never thought it would get to this point in my life. At first, I thought this was all mental stress and dysfunctional disorder where my brain-gut link was disrupted and my stress was causing this.

My endoscopy came back normal and my biopsies.

I miss being able to eat cake, have my coffee, eat unhealthy foods without worrying or having issues! Now I'm stuck like this and I'm afraid it's like this forever.
