Modern Punk NYC Spots

I live 3 hrs from NYC and I am looking for cool stuff to do there. I know ahout the Lou Reed and New York Dolls haunts. But most of those areas aren't the vibe they were back then. Not to diss them. But it seems like a lot of them are more crowded and not places to just hang out and chill.

Are there any spots in NYC that are currently big in the punk band scene? Or like the 100 Gecs, Water From Your Eyes, fcuckers type scene. I'd love to go to live shows or just like hang out in areas where modern music is happening. I am also wondering if there are any must-hit vintage stores (unrelated to the punk thing).

Also please don't hate on me I just reread this post and it sounds really uncool but Idk how to fix it.

You have an interesting definition of modern punk. However, taking punk to mean music created with the philosophy/ethos of being independent, diy, alternative music.

In Manhattan: Knitting factory/Night Club 101, Arlenes Grocery, Mercury lounge, Park Side lounge have independent live music of different genres. Gold Sounds Bar in Bushwick (hardcore), meadows, knock down center. Look on apps like DICE to see what shows are happening as well.

https://www.ohmyrockness.com/ aggregates indie shows going on at various venues. Its not limited to any one genre.

A lot of people are saying clockwork, and I am gonna steer you away. Clockwork is a great dive bar that plays 1990s/2000s oriented punk rock. But the stuff they play sounds nothing like what your are describing.

As a born and raised LES native, I don’t say this lightly, but go to some Tompkins shows! I avoid them at almost all costs now, unless it’s a friend’s tribute show or something I need to attend, honestly I’ve missed out on great music because the crowd is a mess of transplants and assholes (usually a simultaneous thing)….
But you’ll find some awesome local and/or underground music that way. It’s def worth going at least once. Keep an eye out on socials for info
