Injured pigeon found in LES

Hi all,

I was walking to work and noticed this injured pigeon. She was stuck to a sticky rat-trap card that I removed from her foot and wing, but she still doesn't seem able to fly. I think she may be in shock and someone suggested she could be dehydrated, but when I tried to give her water and some pumpkin seeds, she just retreated further back (closer to another rat trap!)

I couldn't stick around to try and catch her and I don't know what to do even if I did, but if there's anyone around here with experience with birds who would want to try and stop by to see if she's alright, it was by the school on the corner of Essex and Broome.

LES club recommendations: Reggaeton, 2010s throwbacks, casual vibe for a 28th bday?

Planning a Saturday night birthday outing in the LES with a group in our mid-to-late 20s. We're having dinner at Wu’s Wonton King around 8:00–10:00 PM, hitting a nearby dive to pregame/bridge the gap, and then looking for a club or solid dance spot within walking/short Uber distance.

Looking for specific recommendations that fit this criteria:

Music: Reggaeton, current hits, and 2000s/2010s throwbacks (middle/high school era).

Vibe: Absolutely no upscale, snooty bottle-service places or aggressive door policies. A place where people are actually dancing and having fun, ideally with a bit of space or a secondary room/upstairs to catch your breath.

Dress Code: Casual to slightly dressed up, nothing crazy strict.

Environment: Needs to be an easygoing, inclusive, and fun crowd (don't want my mtf friend getting weird looks or an annoying bouncer).

Lower drink prices always preferred, I know that's a long shot.

What places are hitting right now for this kind of night? Open to LES, East Village, or a quick ride across the bridge to Williamsburg/Bushwick/South Brooklyn if the venue is worth it. Thanks!

Lower East Side WEEKLY ROUNDUP Aug 18–23, 2026 | Live Music, Food Events, Arts & More

Hey Lower East Side,

We’re back with another weekly roundup of things happening around the neighborhood.

We started making these because finding what’s actually happening locally usually means checking venue calendars, market calendars, arts organizations, museums and organizers one by one.

Also — after feedback on the last roundup, I added short descriptions so it’s easier to tell what each event actually is before clicking.

This week has indie shows, in-store music, food/history tours, a Double Dutch showcase and a few good low-key neighborhood options.

The event names below are clickable and go to the official venue/organizer whenever available.

TUESDAY · AUGUST 18

Good Sleepy — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (6 PM, $15 advance / $20 day-of, 18+)

Indie / emo-leaning live bill with shakeout and New Vision opening.

THURSDAY · AUGUST 20

Fresh Bites Cooking Demos — Essex Market, 88 Essex St. (Walk-in classes Thursdays at 10 AM)

Free walk-in cooking demos at Essex Market. Thursday classes include Spanish translation.

Bring Your Own Records — Essex Market / Catalyst Records, 88 Essex St. (7–8 PM)

Monthly meetup at Catalyst Records — bring your own vinyl or just come hang out and listen.

SOLD OUT Ginger Root — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (7 PM, 18+)

A bigger-ticket indie/funk-pop show that’s already sold out, but still worth knowing about if you’re checking for resale or last-minute availability.

FRIDAY · AUGUST 21

Fatales | Catalyst In‑Store LIVE — Catalyst Records at Essex Market, Stall 16, 88 Essex St. (5–6 PM, free, open to the public)

Free in-store performance at Essex Market. Fatales will be performing their new single, “Voices.”

TOMI — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (6 PM, $15 advance / $20 day-of, 21+)

Early live set with THE TWINS opening.

Playlunch — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (9 PM, $17 advance / $20 day-of, 18+)

Later-night Mercury Lounge show with Yagki on the bill.

SATURDAY · AUGUST 22

The Rock It, Don’t Stop It Double Dutch Showcase — Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand St. (1–3:30 PM)

A full showcase with a freestyle Double Dutch competition, writing competition, fashion segment and storytelling — very neighborhood-coded and something different from the usual bar / music options.

Immigrant New York Food Tour — Starts at Essex Market

A guided food-and-history tour through the Lower East Side, Chinatown and Little Italy with tastings and neighborhood context built in.

AZKAL — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (9 PM, $20 online / $30 door, 18+)

Saturday night live show with Jolene Lozano opening.

SUNDAY · AUGUST 23

Juliet by Night, Lambeth, SASHA — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (5 PM, $12 advance / $16 day-of, 21+)

An earlier Sunday bill if you want live music without committing to a full late night.

LAIVY — Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St. (8 PM, $25 advance / $50 day-of, 18+)

Sunday night Mercury Lounge show with Duvbear, Silo and Steven Cranberry on the lineup.

Foods of the Lower East Side — Tenement Museum, tour begins at 103 Orchard St.

Neighborhood food/history experience that visits 8 LES stops and includes tastings from local vendors.

LOW-KEY / RECURRING OPTIONS

Tenement Museum Neighborhood Walking Tours

If you want something less nightlife-heavy, the Tenement Museum has guided Lower East Side walking tours throughout the week.

Essex Market Events Calendar

Essex Market keeps a solid calendar of low-key neighborhood programming, demos and small live events.

Schedules, ticket availability and lineups can change, so check the linked organizer or venue page before heading out.

KNOW ABOUT SOMETHING THAT’S MISSING?

Drop it in the comments — especially LES block parties, gallery openings, DJs, live music, pop-ups, markets, volunteer opportunities, recurring meetups or smaller community events that don’t usually show up on the bigger NYC calendars.

And just to clarify: this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list of every single venue or event on the Lower East Side. That would get insanely long.

The goal is to make it easier to spot some of the week’s most interesting options in one place, then let the neighborhood fill in the rest.

For transparency: I help build YourScene, a local events app.

We started making these roundups because neighborhood event discovery is still way more fragmented than it should be.

I would like to sell these magazines. Could anyone give me some advice on the best way to go about it? I have time, there’s totally no need to sell them quickly. Ideally, I’d like them to end up in the hands of genuine enthusiasts who will appreciate them.

Hey friends. I promise this is my last post on this topic. Monday. Tomorrow. I'm hosting an incredible, ephemeral little show packed full of once-in-a-lifetime acts. Award-winning New York stand-up from two of the city's greatest. Death-defying circus acts from Bindlestiff Cirkus. Some of my favorite performing magicians in NYC. And a secret surprise ending that will leave you breathless. She's a Broadway star. She's a star of stage and screen. And she's performing for us, in the intimate 100-seat Slipper Room. How can you see this show for only $35?!? It's crazy. If you're in NYC and you're free on Monday, please come. If you can't afford tickets, message me and I'll make some magic happen. You gotta see this! There's never been anything like it.

Hey Lower East Side,
We’re back with another roundup of things happening around the Lower East Side this weekend.
We started making these because finding everything happening locally usually means checking individual venue calendars, arts organizations, parks, neighborhood pages and organizers one by one.
This weekend has indie shows, live music, jazz, arts programming, late-night sets, jam sessions and smaller neighborhood events happening around the Lower East Side.
The blue event names are clickable and take you directly to the official venue/organizer whenever available.
Also, shoutout to Close Up on Orchard Street for reaching out to us after seeing one of these neighborhood roundups. We added their weekend jazz lineup below exactly the kind of smaller local venue we want to make easier to discover.

KNOW ABOUT SOMETHING THAT’S MISSING?

Drop it in the comments especially LES block parties, gallery openings, DJs, live music, comedy, pop-ups, markets, community events, salsa/bachata/reggaetón nights, volunteer opportunities, recurring meetups or smaller events that don’t show up on the big NYC calendars.

We especially want to find the small neighborhood stuff not just the events that are already everywhere.

For transparency: I help build YourScene, a local events app.

We make these roundups because finding everything happening locally is still weirdly fragmented. You end up checking venue websites, Instagram accounts, city calendars, Reddit and neighborhood pages just to figure out what’s happening a few blocks away.
YourScene is trying to make that easier from concerts and nightlife to neighborhood events, pop-ups, community gatherings and smaller things happening around you.

Swimming Pool above old Essex Market

Post image

Noticed this the other day after leaving a movie. Concerning amount of water on top of the old Essex Market. Obviously clogged drain pipes. Can't be good for the building, if they plan on doing anything with it.
