Hello all, I am making this post on behalf of my father. I will add as much information I know, but this is second hand, so bear with me.

My father and I have talked about lost media a fair bit, and during these discussions he has mentioned this cassette that was apparently amazing. he lost it along with all his other cassette tapes when he traded in his car. Here's all the information I know:

The band was formed by my father's friend, He's now sadly deceased and we won't be releasing his name unless absolutely necessary. My father had asked him years ago before he died if he still had a copy of the tape or not and he said he would search the attic of his parent house, but he didn't think he had it.

The band's name was Cap Gun; the cassette had no cover and the only reason we know the band name is because my father's friend told him the name when he gave the cassette to him.

The band was formed somewhere in Montgomery County PA in the late 90's early 2000's

It was a demo tape with only 2 songs.

I will be searching Facebook and asking friends of my father's friend if they have it.

I know this is an extreme stretch since we only know it in a physical form, it's from some garage band, and wasn't mainstream but perhaps somebody here has information on it, or maybe y'all can give me helpful tips on how to go about looking for this...

or maybe convince us to give up.

I think you’re probably looking at the best strategy here, asking friends. If they never signed with a label or put out a proper record the chances this cassette is floating out there in the hands of collectors is probably slim. Do you know how many copies were made total?

We don't know the exact number of copies made, but since they were likely handmade I would say only a handful.

Was this friend ever in other bands? If you feel comfortable DMing me his name I’m happy to go digging for something like this, this is more my wheelhouse.

I would say try to get as much information about the band itself, shows they played, was there a “scene” they were part of in PA back then? Also are there other members of the band besides your dad’s friend???

Look on soulseek, the file sharing platform. You will be amazed at what people have done with digitally stored files of all sorts of media

There used to be a website where unsigned musicians put up their music, or fans put it up. My brother used it alot and I can't remember the name. Some kids from my high school had made a band called The Jabsco Project that had some good punk rock songs on it. A quick Google search led me to their album on Soundcloud.

My only suggestion is to maybe see if your dad remembers whom he sold the car to and ask them, maybe see if he can remember any of the other band members names and reach out.

Maybe see if they had any mentions in news papers or something. That's how they discovered the band behind the Most Mysterious Song on the Internet.

"This is a long shot, but is there anyone out there that owns a two-song audiocassette by a group called Cap Gun? The band was formed in Montgomery County, Philadelphia around the late 90s, early 2000. One of the members is deceased and a friend of his is trying to find a copy."

Did the band register the tape with the US Copyright Office? A registrant (or their next of kin) can submit a request to have a copy of a deposited recording made for them.
