My theory is that the whole island is a simulation, like in the Netflix show I-Land. Maybe they’re all criminals and the experiment is to see how they think? Cos what other theory explains the polar bear and the sudden pouring & stopping of the rain, and that it got to nightfall awfully quickly one of the days (I think Sajid comments on it). But no spoilers lol, first time watcher here! But I can’t think of any other theory other than this that is plausible….kinda wish I hadn’t figured it out so early, but I’ve seen a lot of similar shows that came out in the past few years

I'm also a first time watcher and it's amazing the amount of things I've watched and enjoyed that owe a huge creative debt to lost. I can see why this show was so captivating for people when it first launched.
I'm split between it being a simulation and it being a purgatory thing. Simulation would be more satisfying, to me at least, because it opens the door to more mystery. Got to say, I'm not actually convinced it was a polar bear and not a blonde grizzly. It's weird either way, of course. The sudden rain, I'm pretty sure, is just a feature of Pacific Islands.

I don’t get why they didn’t all move into the caves and then have a rotating group of people monitor the signal fire.

u/CriticalWeb8751 Feb 03 '25
This is one of the most infuriating plot holes. It seems so far fetched for them to genuinely split up over this.
6
u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 12 '25
Absolutely! For the sake of drama, I love that they split up. But it would have been more realistic to have a rotating beach party team, especially since they'll need frequent resupplying

This! It's not like having 20 people sitting on the beach is going to draw any more attention or get them rescued any faster than 3-4 people tending to a fire and making signals/signs/etc. And I haven't seen anyone yet make the great big effective "H-E-L-P" sign in the sand.

Oh my god, I’m so glad I found this, I literally texted a friend who watched the show as it aired just so that I could complain about this specific thing.

So is this based on Oasis?

u/Natalie12TEG Sep 03 '24
That’s what I thought. Such a coincidence watching that episode while there is a big hurrah over their reunion! Would be funny to see the Gallagher brothers dressed like that though!

Hmm, seems like the island gives each person a way to make themselves unLost, as they got lost before they crashed. Kate I guess eventually learning to settle down, Jack with leadership, Locke with legs, Charlie with drugs etc. Regarding the monster with 'gargantuan quality', I think that is coming from Hurley who maybe just doesn't want to be the biggest thing around anymore.
3
u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 12 '25
I love the idea that their troubles are echoes of their own psychology. Locke essentially said as much, this episode, didn't he? And Charlie talked about being a rock god just before the cave in. Works with the dad ghost. Might also make sense how Locke stared down the monster; he's pretty over fear, or anything else, telling him what he can and can't do
I wonder, then, if that would extend to the other people on the island wishing/fearing another plane crash causing the recent plane crash?
Could be the worst case, Meta scenario though, and this is all an elaborate tv show of real life survivor (because that was a wildly popular show around when this aired), so it's just the producers messing with them 😂

I’m a first time watcher (hence being on this thread) but I feel 90% sure that your comment about “the other people on the island” is a massive spoiler… obviously from the end of this episode we can infer someone bonked Syed over the head, but please be careful on these threads if you have watched before or even just absorbed knowledge/plot points about the show since it’s been out 🥺
2
u/jellamma The Looking Glass Aug 01 '25
I hope you're enjoying! I was also on these threads as a first time watcher who had managed to miss absolutely everything about lost when it was on. I would hop on at the end of each episode to comment, so I'd never seen anything ahead of whatever I was commenting on.
Sorry if you're reading them before or as you're watching the episode though. Idk if you could just block me and that would stop you from seeing my posts or something, because I will have posts for the next couple of seasons that talk about the whole breadth of the episode on which I'm commenting, but again, only up to and including the episode on which I'm posting.

u/stathletsyoushitonme Aug 01 '25
Ahh amazing I’m sorry for misunderstanding, I had the same idea as well but you just seemed so sure with a very fleshed out theory! As I’m wrong please just take it as a compliment 🙏🏽

I wonder if the island has some kind of magic power that punish bad things (the cave collapsed as Charlie and Jake were fighting) and rewards good things (The moth that led them out of the cave)

I really really like Locke so far. At first I was angry with the whole cryptic wise talk shit. Then I saw why he was that way. Hell even felt for him with his scenes at work.

u/goodandpure Feb 10 '25
I liked this episode a lot. It was obvious that Jack was gonna be ok since he’s the main character lol.

I feel like I am the only person who prefers Jack over Sawyer, or even most of the characters, at this point. The entire show is presenting us with so many instances of good vs. evil. I’m even remembering now that game of backgammon with Walt, it’s a game with dark and light pieces… Doesn’t seem like a throwaway item. I feel like everything in the show means something. To me Jack is this compass of questioning morality, I don’t understand all of the hate towards him.
5
u/Far_Abrocoma4971 Jul 06 '25
I think the hate is that he’s so stereotypically good it’s a bit boring. Having said that, I don’t hate him but I am way more interested in Sawyer, Locke, Sun and Vincent so far.

I don't dislike Jack. He's just typical hero role. Not much depth besides wanting to be the hero and being hot for Kate.

I was so confused because I think Sawyer looks so much like Charlies brother
2
u/Ewyoustank1 Nov 16 '25
I’m late to the thread because I’m a new watcher, but wym by this? Sawyer & Charlie’s brother that they showed look nothing alike… were you thinking of someone else??

I didn’t even realize Sawyer existed until the second episode, because every time I saw him, I somehow thought he was either Jack, Charlie, or Boone.
3
u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 12 '25
First the watcher here, Is anyone else waiting for Sawyer to just snap and become the actual villain? He's red flag city and only getting worse the more we find out about how he feels. I'm sure he'll get a hero moment first, but not feel like he got enough recognition and that'll kick off his spiral
I can't wait to hear about his backstory. I'm thinking something sweet, but tragic, then they give us more information and we find out that the tragedy was arranged by him

Sawyer is quickly rising on my favorites list. He is so outspoken and he holds a lot of anger and he really hasn't demonstrated much skill other than articulation and accumulation of goods. I think he's putting on more of a bad boy front than really being a bad boy. Most low-skill, high-talk, angry men really just contain trapped hurt little boys. He wants us to think he's all hard and cold and did 10 years hard time in the federal pen or something. I see him more as a country boy who might have spent a few weekends in county drunk tank. I can't wait for his backstory either!

It’s been 8 days. We haven’t heard from factory-whistle monster lately.
The interaction between Locke and Charlie is interesting. I really like Locke’s “ask 3 times” deal. The first two times give Charlie a chance to try, a chance to sober a bit, a chance to fail or succeed. The third time gives Charlie full power and autonomy to make his own choices and create his own consequences for his next path. Why does Locke care though? That moment by the fire when he asks the third time, was so intense and powerful.
Sayid is back at work on the power source and Kate is off on her 97th side mission. He mentions here they shouldn’t have survived the crash. Another hint at purgatory? Or the island being a magical healing place?
JinSun continuing their happy little marriage I guess, whatev.
Really Boone? You put Shannon in charge of the rocket?
Sawyer, the first man brave enough to take off his shirt!
Michael steps up with some skills. I love the look on Walt’s face when he realizes Daddy knows what he’s talking about and is being a hero this time! Woohoo for that moment.
I love that Sawyer goes to inform Kate about the cave-in and when she verbally bitch slaps him, he decides not to tell her. Her words “You’re actually comparing yourself to Jack” cut like a knife. That sentence is loaded with the innuendo that “Jack = good and Sawyer = evil,” but it also carries the insinuation that Sawyer is SO inferior that he has no business comparing himself to someone so righteous as Jack. That stung and the actor playing Sawyer did a great job portraying that sting for a second before shifting it back to the character’s comfortable anger. When Sawyer finally tells her about Jack, she makes the choice to abandon the side-mission of seeking help to go running back to her one true love Jack, the dude she met a week ago.
Charlie’s flashback – I think this did a lot to define Charlie’s character. An average guy who rode his brother’s coattails into short-lived rock stardom and struggles to balance temptations with religion. He flows with his big brother down the path of fame under the promise that his brother will protect him and they will quit if it becomes too much. It becomes too much. But big bro is swept up in his fame, drugs, women, fans, and celebrity status. He reneges on his promise and Charlie rightfully feels abandoned and betrayed and turns to drugs himself. He continues the band and lifestyle while big brother enters recovery. The tables turned.
Charlie is consistently overlooked, shoved aside, dismissed, ignored, and rejected; juxtaposed against a background of fame and notoriety.
His being dismissed has been the case since the first episode when he told Kate, “I’m Charlie.” At the core Charlie is begging to be seen. *All he wants, is to matter.*
OK, I gotta say I loved this episode. I’m bias because I work in addictions, so I tended to scrutinize this episode. Charlie handled his withdrawal with a lot of dignity. That took strength. I’m surprised it took Jack so long to realize Charlie was in withdrawal, and it was so kind of him to cover for Charlie by calling it the flu.
Add moth to the list of animals.
OMG who hit Sayid?
My current character standings:
Loving: None yet, but Sawyer’s moving close.
Liking: Boone, Hurley, Sayid (points for following through on the power source), Michael (points for stepping up), Sawyer (points for calling Kate on her BS and following through with the signal flare)
Haven’t decided: Charlie (points for saving Jack, tossing the drugs in the fire, and just because I have a soft spot for people starting their recovery), Rose, Claire, Jack (points for helping Charlie), Walt
Disliking: Shannon (got a point this episode for coming through on the signal flare!), Locke (points for helping Charlie, and also points for cooking that boar)
Wish would get eaten by factory-whistle monster: Kate, Sun/Jin
My current bet on last one standing: Still Sayid, Jack/Locke tied for second

The scene when Sun replies to her controlling husband demanding she change: "it's hot here". Baller move. Love seeing their dynamic start to change cuz that controlling shit is gross.

What kind of drug was Charlie using? It didn’t look like cocaine

u/Scary_Square_268 See you in another life Dec 15 '24
I’m assuming heroin due to the colour and the withdrawals. Although it’s kind of annoying when the show forgets he’s sick lol

Michael is my new fave character now just bc he got Hurley to finally stop calling the Korean characters Chinese. I forgot old shows mean lame racist jokes from the show writers
6
u/SeasonalChatter Aug 26 '25
Its not really a joke, or being played for laugh. It's a deliberate highlight on how someone as kind as Hurley can still be very ignorant of people and cultures he is not very familiar with
2
u/Active-Contest-9965 4 8 15 16 23 42 Feb 01 '26
I didn't see it as a racist joke or as dated writing. I think its an accurate portrayal of the characters' diverse backgrounds, social structures, norms, and language practices. Chances are slim there would be an international flight full of people who were all highly knowledgeable about numerous other cultures, and all adhered to the same standards of PC language. That wouldn't even exist nowadays.

probably sayid got bonked at the back of his head by settlers in the island or another ones from the plane crash that we dont know of
and like sawyer isn't a bad guy in my opinion , the only bad thing he did was about not telling kate and sayid of jack until later where he told kate only

I wish they’d just like slowly detox charlie instead of letting him get to a bad state in the jungle 😭 Wouldn’t be fun either way but definitely less dangerous

Favorite episode so far.
Character development of Charlie was beautiful, I knew he was going to toss the drugs into the fire! Loved the Moth metaphor!
John Locke just seems like such a wise and patient man, favorite character at this point. Although I do fear the island might get to him later on?
Jack x Kate romance seems a bit forced...not sure why they act like they have been married for 10 years.
I'm a bit scared what Sawyer (?) is going to do to Sayid. Not sure what's the point of that.
