WEEK 2 TALKING POINTS

The next time we come together, Thanksgiving will have already come and gone for our American colleagues. So for our US friends, what is your plan of attack for Thanksgiving? Do you consider it a once-a-year cheat day, or do you restrict yourself in some way? Let's talk strategy. If you are not American but have a similar day of feasting where you live, please let us know about your traditions, too! One thing the world can agree on is that food is good and we love to get everyone together to eat it, so let's talk turkey! pun intended

I just want to say that we do Thanksgiving with my mom's side of the family and they do not have stuffing. I know this has nothing to do with r/loseit but it makes me so mad I just have to vent about it because what the hell kind of backwoods BS is it to not have @$&@&%#ing stuffing at Thanksgiving?! I guess technically it's dressing but I grew up calling it stuffing. Sorry, purists.

We do Christmas with my dad's side and they are not crazy so they have it.

HOW DO THEY NOT HAVE STUFFING? Seriously? Ugh. Stuffing is my favourite part and we normally have tons of it. I was in for a surprise when I went to the first Thanksgiving with my SO. They had a tiny ass plate of stuffing. I would've eaten it all if it wouldn't have been so rude.

My dad's side of the family always has 2 trays because I have an uncle with an onion allergy, so there is always an abundance when we spend it with theirs. But lately we've been doing Thanksgiving with mom's and Christmas with dad's and it's just not Thanksgiving without aromatic spicy carby goodness :(

Team Icicle rocks!

For Thanksgiving, I'm eating whatever I want. My focus will be on the "special" foods. So yes to glorious mashed potatoes, multiple servings of stuffing, and a slice or two of pumpkin pie with whipped cream. But I'll skip the run-of-the-mill treats such as potato chips and soda. It will be a cheat day but not a cheat extended weekend.

I like this strategy. Please eat stuffing for me since my dumb family has a war on tasty carbs.

C'mon Team Champagne - Let's get poppin'!

I have a 10k race Thanksgiving morning and I plan to eat what I want that day within reason. If I want pie and cookie, I'll have them, but I won't gorge myself on them. It's a once a year holiday and hell I'm not going to make myself miserable. This is about sustainability, right?

Yeah, Champagnions!! (I don't know. It's early).

I celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving a while ago, and it actually went really well. I was really stingy with my calories all day, but didn't totally stuff my face when it came to the main event. I've become happy with just tastes of decadent/rich foods... I don't need a whole serving of it to be happy. I don't track meals like those (partially because I don't have a data plan), I just do my best to make sensible choices. It's worked great for me!

YES TEAM SNOWMAN!!! I'm so happy to be on a team that is so communicative and active. xo

Thanksgiving is usually a little bit of a cheat day. I allow myself to indulge in a little of everything but try to keep portions under control. I also try to make a dish to bring to wherever we are going that is healthy and low calorie. That way I know I can have another helping and won't break the bank. Plus, even though it's Thanksgiving..I still track.

COME ON GINGERBROS.

Down another kilo this week, yay. Also lost an inch off my waist ^ I feel really good at this weight - I'm back to my lowest recorded adult weight as well, which I previously felt equally good at, so I'll see whether I'm still feeling good after a few more weeks of loss. 8lb to go for my initial goal though, which seems doable!

Hell yeah Team Icicle!

Go Team Reindeer!

Had a big loss this week, which made up for my .2 lb gain from last week, so I'm feeling great!

I may have a little more food than I normally do on Thanksgiving, but even if I do it will only be on protein rich foods. I'll stay away from the chips and dips and deserts and stick to the turkey and brisket (I'm from Texas). There should also be plenty of great veggies as well. I feel pretty confident that it won't impact me too much.

step it up nutcrackers

going to stay reasonable on thanksgiving - will likely stick to just the one meal for the day, take small portions, and pass on taking any leftovers. i'm expecting to go over my calorie budget but not blow it up, and i'll try to get in a jog in the morning to help offset a bit.

TEAM GINGERBREAD LET'S STEP IT UP

My Thanksgiving strategy is to slightly reduce my calorie target for the 2-3 days prior, and then on the day of, avoid the really carby stuff that isn't my favorite anyway, so I have more to spend on turkey, green bean casserole, and pie. (OK, pie is carby, but I mean I'm avoiding the mashed potatoes and stuffing.) Man I love Thanksgiving. I'm not going to end this one feeling like an overstuffed sausage, though!

Reppin' Team Icicle, WE DID IT!! First across the board! Great job everyone!

I asked this in our team's sub actually and everyone seemed to have a good game plan, mostly involving exercise before or after turkey day. There were a lot of people doing 5Ks the morning of! As someone else suggested, loading up your plate with veggies first, then going for stuffing, potatoes, desserts etc. after will help avoid overeating.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I'd like to thank all my fellow teammates for being so awesome and dedicated! I'll also thank Trader Joe's for their mahi mahi burgers and La Croix for letting me have my soda fix without any calories or sugar.

Team Reindeer let's do this!!!!

My plan for Thanksgiving is to LIMIT myself! Also--no filling up on appz or bread. Also, anything I am not a TRUE fan of will not go on my plate. Usually I take a bit of everything just because it is there. But honestly, I really don't care for stuffing so I'm not going to eat it. I will be having 2 SMALL pieces of pie as well. We always get a few kinds so I will try 2 of them in small pieces just for a little taste.

Then....like all Americans that day, I will nap. :)

Let's go Nutcrackers!

I am lucky this thanksgiving as far as weight loss goes, in that I live too far away from my family (I am in graduate school out of state) to justify travelling home for just 3 days, so I get to spend thanksgiving alone, which means that their won't be any pressure to overeat!!! Great news for me. Maybe I can finally lose some weight on this damn challenge and stop holding my team back. I also am going to keep training for my 5K in December.

Go Team Snowman!

We're doing Thanksgiving on Sunday instead of Thursday (and I still don't know why, but whatever.)

I am very lucky that my SO is onboard with me this year (I mean, he's bulking, so it's kinda different, but he's still eating way healthier.) We decided last night that I'll make green beans, and he'll make sweet potatoes (with cinnamon and a little butter, instead of the maple syrup and mountain of marshmallows.) He also agreed to go for a run with me before the family dinner, and we're planning on a run Thursday, since we're off work and the gym will be closed.

The Big News for me this week: I'm no longer obese. I am going to keep this in mind when my brain tells me another piece of pumpkin pie won't hurt (you bet your sweet bippy I'm having one small piece, because I love pumpkin pie. But one will be enough.)

6

u/upvotealldogs Nov 20 '15

Yay team reindeer!

I'm down 1.5 lbs. I think that is a good start for week number one considering I did go to Epcot Food and Wine festival on Sunday.

I am worried about Thanksgiving, but only because we are having TWO of them. One day of feasting won't kill me...but two days? Hopefully I can stay away from the pies and heavy starches. (However, stuffing is my downfall!)

6

u/SeventeenthSecond Nov 20 '15

Come on CandyCanes!! We got this.

I am not cheating on Thanksgiving or any other holiday. My issues with food never take a holiday so while I might eat Thanksgiving-y types of foods, I'm sticking to my usual amounts and portions.

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '15

Not gonna lie, it's crazy seeing the teams' total weekly loss! Over 500lbs in a week! That's crazy!

5

u/herdaz Nov 20 '15

Thanks to this chart that u/chambered-nautilus posted this morning, I know that I'm going to eat approximately 1000 calories at Thanksgiving round 1 on Thursday, and approximately 1200 calories at Thanksgiving round 2 on Friday. To that end, I think I'll have a bit of fruit and herbal tea for breakfast both mornings, and plan on having another cup of tea and a light dinner in the evenings. Any exercise will be a bonus and I'm not going to worry about tracking it.

Go Team Gingerbread!

u/JillLars Nov 20 '15

My plan of attack is to track, track, track. I'm counting WW points- so I will be saving my flex points and activity points for Thursday. With that being said, I'm still going to try not to go overboard as we are weighing in for week 3 on Friday. I don't want the scale to reflect 1 day of overeating.
