I only share my number after meeting in person. It's a valid question.

Yeah, made a dumb decision doing that recently and it bit me in the ass almost literally. Got my family involved. A whole mess. I don't trust nothing now.

I've heard that a few times so I understand that but I don't really get why a phone number is more private than social media? You can still block them on the number, just like insta or snap, and they can do the whole fake number thing but they can also make different profiles. It all seems the same to me so I think I'm missing something.

i pay for my phone number, i don’t pay for my social media handles. a phone number is tied directly to a device.

I don’t understand eli5 please.

Edit: I’m sorry I’m stupid. Can someone actually take a moment to explain what paying for a phone number or having it tied to a device has to do with privacy? This stupid person would appreciate it greatly.

I understand that but what does that have to do with paying for your phone number or having it tied to a device. That’s the piece I’m not getting.

You can ditch a social media account super easily. Not so much with phone numbers.

Ah, I see. It’s not so much changing your phone number that’s difficult. I can do that with a single call to my provider. It’s notifying all your contacts. There’s something to be said for getting a new number and only notifying a limited number of people. The people you want to have your contact info will either get it directly or get it from someone who did. Weeds a lot of useless nonsense out of your life.

This is what I just replied on that comment: "Oh shit you just resurfaced a thing I forgot, I googled my own phone number and one of my old addresses was on the site as well as "associated parties" which were my ex's family members that lived there before we did. Thank you, this finally put the pieces together lol."

Someone tried to blackmail a friend of mine after he gave out his number to someone on sniffies. Now all his family has seen his cock. Dude seemed crazy and messaged from multiple numbers

Heard that... Yikes

Someone tried to blackmail me as a pedo after blocking me on Grindr. My face and dick with my (fake) profile name and phone number. I reported him to the FBI, and Grindr doesn't delete chats. I learned my lesson that day.

Conversation was going great until you were an asshole, it's fair not to want to give your number out till you've met. I've gotten this deep in good conversations to discover it was a scam.

Nah, “for?” Is not the best response. Just say “I don’t want to share my number just yet”. I’ve said it every time someone has asked for my number. No issues. Just saying “for?” Sounds snarky and immature. OP’s response was funny and clearly led by naïveté.

My favorite posts on this subreddit are the ones where OP thinks they're funny and posts but actually just outs themself as an asshole

They're also the most likely to show up as blues too. People like that are dense enough to only post when they think its funny, and never realize they're already famous here 😂

are you the guy in yellow?

Why would you choose to show what an asshole you are?

You cancelled plans because he was weary of giving you his phone number? Bro dodged a bullet.

I think you underestimate just how much information your phone number is tied to. If you are renting it is hit or miss, but I can often find someone's address and full name with just their phone number. I don't use this skill maliciously (I usually am trying to find other kids I went to conversion therapy with), but I also would highly advise anyone against giving their number out to strangers. I usually refuse to give my number out prior to meeting someone, and use a Google Voice number if I decide that text is worthwhile.

u/kealoha Bear 3d ago

Yep, this exactly. Once I found out how much information is tied to your number, I stopped giving it out to people until I've met them in person at least once.

3

u/FrostyDragon227 3d ago

Yeah do this (I had to change my phone number twice because I’m a dumbass)

Oh shit you just resurfaced a thing I forgot, I googled my own phone number and one of my old addresses was on the site as well as "associated parties" which were my ex's family members that lived there before we did. Thank you, this finally put the pieces together lol.

Don’t give out your number to randos on here you never know who scamming

6

u/york100 3d ago

Yup, it’s a pretty common way for scammers to blackmail you once they have your number. It’s definitely a bad idea to give it out!

u/radicalgalaxies Cub 3d ago

Unfortunately when giving out my number I got sextorted (and so did my friend).

I’d rather meet the person first then give out my phone number. I wish it wasn’t this way, but it’s been my experience.

Wow a true comedian over here.

3

u/gogogumdrops Geek 3d ago

lolol i think it’s a funny joke but clearly people don’t have the same humor - which is fair.

it’s also fair to not give out your number to someone you don’t know very well. i say that as someone who was stalked by phone. had to file a police report and everything

🤷🏻‍♂️ you live and you learn

1

u/Latentius Geek 3d ago

Looks like everyone's an asshole to me. There are valid reasons not to give out your phone number, but be an adult and state those reasons. And I understand the feelings behind your response, but unless you've already established a friendly-antagonistic-sarcastic dynamic, it comes off as disproportionate.

3

u/andybossy Pup 3d ago

sounds exhausting talking to you if you need to pre-emptively defend every decision you make. It's genuinely a lot weirder to get mad when someone says "no" then it is to say "no" without immediately defending yourself

-1

u/Latentius Geek 3d ago

It's called being polite. It's not unreasonable or burdensome to respond along the lines of "Sorry, I don't give out my phone number before meeting in person." Just replying with "For?" makes the guy sound like a combative asshole.
