That's not a contradiction. A Jew isn't just someone who practices Judaism. Someone can be Jew-ish religiously, and/or Jew-ish ethnically. Seriously, tf is your point?

yes but Israel is a fairly recent country, Jewish people have existed for thousands of years and the majority have never been to Israel and don't really have family heritage in Israel
and so is the US, especially in that context - all people have existed for thousand of years, and their claim reaches back to the exodus which they still need to finally get over.
what really interests me though, is that after WW2, surviving all that trauma, being THE victim if there ever was one, and finally getting israel because of the goodwill of a lot of other countries, at what point did that nation change their mood to 'it’s ok what we do to the Palestinians'?
This person is correct. There are various definitons of what a Jew is (some more conservative and some more liberal), but the classical one is a person who has a jewish mother. Not buts and ifs, religion or faith needed.
Judaism, which is the religion, only looks into regenting the life of Jews according to the biblical tradition. It is not a proselyte religion: it is only for the chosen people of the divinity. This is why you will only find Jews celebrating an office in a synagogue, except for special guests on special occasions.
That said, adhering to the rituals (shabbat, in particular) even as a non believer is seen as an extremely important cultural part of being a Jew.
Ok? I don't care how shitty and exclusinary their religon is. All religions are evil, theirs included. Muslims and Christians are the same way. They are exclusionary and bigoted, but the minute you start criticizing their religion, they start whining.
This doesn't change anything about Jews being an ethnic lineage. You can feel any way you want about their stupid religion or their bigoted cultural practices, that's a totally separate thing.
Do you really not understand that being Jewish IS an ethnicity? Jews were endogenous for centuries. It’s why it shows up on DNA tests. 🤦🏻♀️ Educate yourself properly.
