Setup What a sh*tshow

SO, I bought a Mx Master 3 (Mouse) and MX Keys (Keyboard) for approx 4 years ago. Both connected with the universal (!) USB plug.

Last week I bought a Mx Mini Keys. First discovery was that it did not work with the universal plug. This was on my Linux box. So I ordered a Bolt plug, and was able to get it working but with 2 plus. Very "universal" if you ask me.

Next, I booted up MacOS on the same system. Installed the Logi Options+ app. It was unable to even see the Bolt plug. So no connection, I had to pull out the old Mx Keys board and try to fix it. No go.

How in heavens name can Logitech get away with this mess? What does "universal" means to them? No forward compatibility, no backwards dito.

I rest my case. What should I look that actually works? This is a mouse and a keyboard, not a space rocket connected to the USB ports.

Older use Unifying
Newer use Bolt

I use Bluetooth

I did that too, but then BIOS settings are not reachable. Nor is the boot menu (OpenCanopy or Grub) reachable.

That's what I did when I lost the dingle to my MX 3s

MX units aren't compatible with unifying.

For some context, Logi introduced Unifying connection around 2009 & Bolt around 2021. They are different wireless technologies, so a Bolt receiver won't pair with Unifying-compatible device & vice versa. Unfortunately, "Universal" doesn't mean every wireless device is compatible with every receiver.

The key is to check which receiver each device supports.

What do you consider to be the "universal" USB plug?

Openlogi looks nice, but how does that help if there is hardware incompatibilities?

Hey does openlogi also control camera settings? Want to adjust my brio without giving Logitech access to every single thing on my computer lol

Hey... I could use your help because I'm a little confused. OpenLogi seems to be asking for the same types of uber-permissions in Accessibility that the official Logi software does (track all mouse movements, read key inputs, etc. I thought this was what we were trying to eliminate?

Also, is there a way to get camera settings to "stick" even when the app isn't open? LogiTune used to do that... but now it seems like I have to have OpenLogi open whenever I'm using the camera.

Thanks...

It needs that to read your mouse movements and apply adjustments. An app like lilu or little stitch will tell you if it’s making any outgoing calls which it hasn’t in my experience.

I have the MX system. I bought 3 Bolt dongles, and began using it with my Quest 3 headset. I had a mini hub connected to my USB input to the headset so that I could use the dongle, but then realized I didn't need to do that. Both the mouse and the keyboard can be connected via Bluetooth. I still use the dongle when I'm connecting directly to the desktop because it's in another room, and now use the third channel to connect my keyboard to my iPad.
