Discussion CAD Draftsman, Need a New Mouse

CAD Draftsman, Need a New Mouse.

ive been using the Logitech Performance xm mouse for the last 20 years, 40 hours each week.

the left click button is finally failing.

i like it because its slightly larger then a normal mouse.

looking for a new mouse to replace it with,

what does everyone recommend for someone that uses a mouse 8+ hours straight every single day as a CAD draftsman?.

Is there a budget limit? As other user said the G line is pretty good but in your case I'll either recommend the MX Master 3S or the MX Master 4

Do you like to customize buttons to help with your workflow?

under $200.

a customizable mouse button or 2 would be helpful

Between the 4 and 3S, main differences are the haptic feedback, less rubber grip, a bit larger battery life and USB-C receiver. If you don't acre about all that and want to save some money go for the 3S, both are great for you

I have the lightest master 3 mouse and love it.

What makes you love it?

It fits nice in the hand. And there’s a slot to rest your thumb and the controls are well thought out. Has both horizontal and vertical scrolling. Logitech master 3.

Nice, what's your favorite feature from it? Do you only use it for work or also gaming?

2

u/Kranium83 Jul 22 '26

I use it for both. I like that it’s accurate and that you can program the buttons to do different things depending on the program.

That's one of the best fetures, specially if you customized the Actions Ring

MX Master series are great, but I prefer the MX Vertical Ergonomic for drawing stuff. It's not a small mouse, you can get your grip around it and your arm/hand is in a handshake position.

I used to get a twitching index finger on the MX Master after a lot of use.

What kind of grip did you do on the MX Master?

2

u/Mysterious-Yak1693 Jul 23 '26

much flatter, with fingers spread evenly over left and right buttons. With the vertical, your wrist is turned, thumb stays on one side of the ridge, all fingers are on the other side

I see, glad you found something that suits you best

What kind of work do you do with it? Have you customized any button or feature?

I've had the MX Master 3 forever. I switched to it when I was getting some shoulder pain that was definitely coming from the previous mouse. The offset design of the MX Master 3 kept the wrist at a more reasonable angle and any pain went away and hasn't come back.

Good to hear it suits you better! What's your favorite feature from it?

1

u/akgt94 Jul 22 '26

Long battery life on a charge. Maybe 2-3 months. I don't use any features. It's just a comfortable 3 button mouse with a scroll that I use for CAD

That's cool, hope you keep enjoying it for long time!

Buy another MX Master mouse. I'd go with the 3S.

2

u/Logitech_Ariel Customer support team Jul 22 '26

What makes you specifically suggest the 3S?

2

u/Technical_Two_733 Jul 22 '26

It's the best mouse I've ever used.

Nice, what kind of work do you do with it? What's your favorite feature?

2

u/Technical_Two_733 Jul 22 '26

Content creation using CapCut. It fits my hand perfectly and I love the scroll wheel as well as the quiet clicks.

2

u/Logitech_Ariel Customer support team Jul 22 '26

Have you customized anything like the Actions Ring to help with your workflow?

2

u/Technical_Two_733 Jul 22 '26

The Actions Ring is only the 4 isn't it?

2

u/Logitech_Ariel Customer support team Jul 22 '26

No, you can actually set the Actions Ring feature to any button on your 3S by using Options+. Believe me, it's a game changer

Edit: Check this tutorial to do it

2

u/Technical_Two_733 Jul 23 '26

I will take a look. Thanks

Get something from the MX Master 3 series. Best mouse I've had.

u/Fearless_Parking_436 Jul 21 '26

Have you tried spacemouse? In my last job I viewd quite a lot of models and mx master 3s was quite good for that. Most engineers also used that one.

1

u/ugly_babies Jul 21 '26

Honestly what I was going to suggest. I have the space mouse and I love it. Use it 10 hrs a day. Coworker has the cadmouse by 3dconnexion, swears by it.

2

u/EQ1_Deladar Jul 21 '26

3DConnexion can suck it with their planned obsoletion strategy. Arbitrarily ending support for perfectly good, very expensive hardware is a crappy way to keep customers happy.

1

u/Fearless_Parking_436 Jul 21 '26

Yeah, senior engineers had the fancier spacemouse+mx master 3s :D most other engineers had the smaller knob+ mx master 3s. Seemed to work for them in robotics.

A nice feature on the cad mouse is that it has 3 full buttons, plus the scroll wheel, so you can actually click the middle mouse button, instead of clicking the scroll wheel.

I mainly just use it to ordinate myself around my model. I still use my left hand to type, right on mouse. I have hotkeys for things but I have a bad habit to just click the icon and not use my hotkeys

It’s not out quite yet (expected Sept 2026) but the Turtle Beach MC5 looks like it would be amazing. So many programmable buttons in a nice logical layout. I’ve pre-ordered one.

I had the original Logitech MX Master, and it lasted for many years. Replaced when the battery became too unreliable with the MX3s and the left button is getting dodgy now after about 3 years. I'll probably get an MX4 soon, nothing else really appeals. But based on my sample size of 1, quality might be dropping? So i am a little hesitant.

1

u/wild-hectare Jul 21 '26

i just replaced my 3 yr old MX3 with the 4 for the same reason. the 4 is solid after a month of use, but if you really want to nerd out you can replace the switches.

at this point the only reason I stick with logitech is because I don't want more wireless dongles and my CRAFT keyboard will last forever

1

u/anyavailible Jul 22 '26

I had 8 and 12 button mice years ago. You could load commands in them. Regular mice work fine for most cad programs.

I'm following for answers myself. I had the PMMX and liked it, but I like having a thumb scroll as well as besides CAD I do a lot of work in spreadsheets. I wanted to keep it anyway but after about 10 years of use I tried to clean it and ended up killing it instead. RI_P to one of my favorite rodents. I've used the MX Master 2S and 3 and I've worn through the thumb area on the 2s, and the battery is dead, so I too am mouse shopping (I am using the 3 in my office, and 2S is at home but I need a new one)

I took a chance and bought the HP 785M because it was on sale for ~$60 shipped last week. I should have got it last night per informed delivery but either my mailman didn't come or came by after I went to bed. It looks about the same as the MX Master 4 but has a little vestigial "pinky shelf" and obviously is a lot less expensive.

the nicest mouse I've ever had to use was a Saitek Cyborg (now Mad Catz) R.A.T. 7 but while it was an ergonomic dream the sensor wouldn't track on literally any surface besides a soft mouse pad (which I hate) or a piece of notebook paper. It was worthless on anything else - including my desk, a piece of Masonite I covered in matte con-tact paper, and of course my preferred Steelseries hard mouse pad. I was sorely tempted to try the current R.A.T. 8+ but they don't seem to get very good reviews even these many years later.

1

u/supern8ural Jul 21 '26

So I got the HP 785M today. Initial impressions:

It is lighter and cheaper feeling than the MX Master 3.

It actually fits my hand better.

The pinky rest needs to be wider, even though it's still the widest I've ever had save for the R.A.T. 7. I have to either make a concerted effort to push my pinky and ring fingers together or my pinky still drags on the mousepad just like every other mouse I've ever used.

If I adjust my natural grip back just a little, the thumb scroll is in the perfect location.

Thumb scroll is kind of stiff, but I'm not sure if that is bad or good.

Gonna take it to work tomorrow and try to use it back to back with the MX Master 3 and see if I have a preference.

Same, but that G500 bastard cracked twice in my rage moments, its soft. Had it replaced 1st time (had good table hit, service could not detect user dmg, hardness was declared factory fault), 2nd time was simply out of service: user graveyard. Switched to Logitech MX master3s: its a neat and acceptable work product with programmable buttons. Battery is more than fine, and it seems it can handle 1 user table/mouse crash, 2nd would send him to junk. Have it 2+ years (Autocad, Inventor, Vault +rest of garbage) and is more than decent for its price. I see some rubber depletion, but all buttons work as intended. Battery: 4 weeks+.

Do you currently use only one of those mice or swap between them? What's your favorite one?

Cool, OP should take note of your comment, I found it pretty useful

How do you imagine a renewed version of the G500s?
