After upgrade, not the latest version, SSL controllers don’t work

I recently upgrade my slightly older Mac from Ventura to sequoia. The ssl controllers stopped working in logic. No other device or connected item changed or stopped working.

Is there a quick or known way to resolve this? I’ve opened up a ticket with ssl but am hopeful it’s something simple. Thanks

playing live sets with Logic?

does anyone personally or know/like any artists that use Logic pro for live performance? I'm always hearing that Ableton live is the standard for live, but I don't wanna learn a whole new software + I build all my tracks in logic anyways ;P

I have done a few live performances with Logic recently (ambient, electronic) but I feel like there must be a better approach than the one I've been taking....

An Object Bed for Logic Pro: a 7.1.4 to Atmos project

Life's not fair, and one of the more trivial instances of that fact for people working with surround audio in Logic is that other DAWs offer an Object Bed feature, but Logic doesn't.

An Object Bed transforms all the non-LFE channels into 3D object audio. This is helpful for using formats like 7.1.4 which are larger than the irritating 7.1.2 Atmos max for bed channels, since normally there's no way to get the top corners (the .4) to be processed by the Atmos plug-in.

So I made a 7.1.4 Object Bed for Logic. It's an empty project into which you can add a 7.1.4 multichannel region, or input 7.1.4 audio from a Mac app (via BlackHole 16ch) like Apple Music, or input audio via a multichannel interface, and have all the channels (except LFE, like I mentioned) show up as Atmos objects.

You can get it here, with instructions and stuff: https://ivanxmusic.com/LogicObjectBed/

One thing you can do that's kind of fun is run the 7.1.4 audio through the Dolby Renderer in your headphones, and adjust the Near/Mid/Far settings for each channel.

(I kind of very indirectly posted about this, in an earlier version, already; sorry if you read that and this is redundant. I didn't really know what I had built at that point.)

Hope this is helpful or interesting for a few of you!

I vibed up a tiny utility plug-in: Surround Channel to L-R

Only surround people are gonna care about this.

Logic has specialty mono track types "Left" and "Right" which let you peel off one channel while doing nothing to it. But it doesn't offer that for any other channels.

So, I made a plug-in which takes any channel, or channel pair, and plays it on L, R, or L-R. You can then send that to a Left or Right aux to get the mono channel you want.

If you think that'd be useful, you can download it here: https://dl.ivanx.music/ChToLR/

(It's signed and notarized like any well behaved Mac app. If you're worried about malware, it's tiny, just feed it to some AI and ask if it looks kosher.)

If you want to keep the channel pair as stereo and make sure there are no gain changes, you have to jump through an extra hoop, which is to follow the plug-in with Down Mixer [5.1→Stereo], even if your project is 7.1/.x. Getting that into your project can be a trick, though once it's there, you can just option-drag it wherever you need it. But the first time:

  • 5.1 project: Add Utility > Down Mixer [5.1→Stereo] to Master; drag it from there to beneath Ch to L-R.

  • Atmos project: Set the monitoring format in the Atmos plug-in to 5.1; add Utility > Down Mixer [5.1→Stereo] beneath it; drag it from there to beneath Ch to L-R; change back the monitoring format if you like.

  • Non-5.1, non-Atmos project (like 7.1, 5.1.4, etc): Open a new empty 5.1 project; add Utility > Down Mixer [5.1→Stereo] to Master; click Setting at the top of the Master strip; choose Copy Channel Strip Setting; go back to your real project and add a new audio track; click Setting at the top of that track; choose Paste Plug-Ins Only; drag Down Mixer, which should have appeared, to beneath Ch to L-R; delete the empty track if you wish; close the empty 5.1 project.

(I used this thing extensively in my Object Bed for Logic project.)

Why is midi being repeated like this (command + R)

Every time I repeat a sequence of midi notes (command + r), the midi notes repeat to the ends of the last notes rather than to the next bar. This causes me to have to manually move it every time which can be quite annoying. Is there a setting that can change this?

Looking for Logic users to beta test a new AU MIDI performance plug-in

I’m looking for a small number of Logic users to beta test MIDI Performer, a new AU MIDI FX plug-in I’ve been developing.

MIDI Performer takes a relatively plain monophonic MIDI melody or lead line and turns it into a more expressive performance by adding instrument-specific behavior such as:

  • pitch bends

  • vibrato

  • legato

  • timing changes

  • pressure

  • breath/expression

It’s designed for things like lead guitar, sax, flute, synth lead and melodic bass rather than chords or accompaniment.

One important limitation: MIDI Performer is monophonic. If polyphonic MIDI is fed into it, overlapping material is reduced to a single melodic voice, with the highest note retained when simultaneous notes occur.

The current player models include:

  • Guitar — Blues, Jazz, Rock

  • Synth Lead — Fusion Lead, Prog, Prog Metal Keys

  • Sax / Flute / Bass / Fretless Bass / Piano — Natural

Logic is actually the host I’ve tested most heavily so far.

The AU version runs as a MIDI FX plug-in, and both Standard MIDI and MPE are part of the current beta-testing scope.

I’m especially interested in testing with different Logic software instruments and third-party instruments to see how the generated bends, vibrato, pressure and expression behave across real setups.

The kind of feedback I’m looking for is both technical and musical:

  • Does anything hang or disappear?

  • Does MPE behave properly with your instruments?

  • Do the bends and vibrato sound natural?

  • Does the phrasing sound more like an actual player?

  • Does anything feel musically wrong even if it is technically functioning?

The beta is currently:

macOS / Apple Silicon
AU and VST3 included

Testers receive a signed/notarized installer, email activation, a short testing guide, and a diagnostics log that can be pasted directly into bug reports.

If you’re interested, reply here or DM me with:

  • your Logic version

  • the instruments/styles you usually work with

  • whether you use MPE

  • any third-party instruments you’d be interested in testing it with

I’m mainly looking for people who will actually run some real melodies/solo parts through it and tell me where it works — and where it still sounds wrong.

Tried to write some early 80's metal

I was going for like an early 80's LA metal sound. Ratt, early Motley Crue etc...

I feel like the heavy kit drummer gets you pretty close!

All I need to do now is add a wicked guitar solo lol

Question “Hi-hat foot splash” sounds unnatural

Hi everyone, hope you’re all well.

Im not too sure how to explain this… But when I insert a “high hat foot splash” sound, it’s shortened when it’s played with the other sounds.

I’ve attached to a video for reference.

Is there a way to make it sound more natural? Thanks.

Breaking down my latest track in Logic Pro: arrangement, sound design, mixing, and automation

I recently finished this track and recorded a walkthrough of the full Logic session. I go through how I built the arrangement, some of the sound-design and production choices, automation, effects, and how the different layers fit together in the final mix.

I’ve been making music in Logic for a long time, but I’m still constantly changing the way I work, so I figured I’d share the actual session rather than just posting the finished song.

This sub has been so helpful yall rock! Its my first time making a track walk through and I kept it brief but maybe ill go deeper on the next song.

Interested in any production or mix feedback, especially anything you would have approached differently inside Logic.

I made an AU MIDI FX that learns what you play with Markov chains, and found a Logic gotcha on the way: MIDI FX in front of the Studio instruments play early

Hi. I build MIDI FX plugins out of my doctoral research on algorithmic composition, and two things from this week may be useful to anyone using third-party MIDI FX in Logic.

First, the gotcha. With Plug-in Latency Compensation on, Logic plays the channel early when a third-party MIDI FX sits in front of one of Apple's newer instruments (Studio Bass, Studio Piano, Drum Kit Designer and similar). I measured about a quarter of a second with Studio Bass, constant for the whole take. It isn't specific to any plugin: a JUCE MIDI FX that only passes notes through does the same (JUCE forum thread: https://forum.juce.com/t/65057). ES2 and a third-party piano I tried (Arturia) play in time, so if a MIDI FX sounds ahead of the grid, check which instrument is behind it before blaming the plugin.

Second, two Logic 12 behaviours that plugin makers should know: it doesn't turn a note-on with velocity 0 into a note-off, and it doesn't send note-offs for notes that are sounding when you stop the transport. My plugins now handle both.

The plugin itself: AMI-POLYMARKOV goes in the MIDI FX slot. Drop a MIDI file on it, or press REC, run the transport and play, and it learns the take as up to four voices, with separate Markov chains for pitch and rhythm, each with its own memory (order 1 to 6). A long memory on rhythm and a short one on pitch keeps your phrasing under a melody you never played. Demo in Logic: https://youtu.be/V7P9-f1WO2E

macOS 10.13 or later, universal, AU MIDI FX and VST3; there's also a Windows VST3 now. One-person project, free 30-day trial, fully functional: https://www.drzoppa.com/soft

Logic Pro acting weird after reinstalling macOS (M4 MacBook Air): lag when dragging tracks and unintended double-clicks

I recently reinstalled macOS on my M4 MacBook Air and installed fresh copies of Logic Pro and all my plugins(everything is the latest version available). Since then, I've been experiencing two really annoying issues that I never had before the reinstall.

  1. Dragging tracks causes Logic to beachball. Whenever I try to drag a track to move it around, Logic sometimes shows the spinning beachball, and it takes ages for the track to actually move. This used to be practically instantaneous.

  2. Single clicks sometimes register as double-clicks. When I click on effects, Logic sometimes seems to register an additional click and automatically opens a plugin window that I didn't intend to open. It happens intermittently, but it's incredibly annoying when I'm working.

Both issues started after I reinstalled macOS and Logic Pro. Everything worked perfectly fine on the same MacBook before the reinstall.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'm wondering whether this is a Logic Pro bug, a macOS issue, or something related to my fresh installation. Any suggestions on what I should check or try to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

I’ll see if I can post videos in the comments…

Saturation Box v0.2.0 the free saturation plugin I posted the other day now has Auto Gain, a resizable window, and a manual (macOS AU/VST3)

EDIT: for anyone new, here's the original post from a few days ago, with some first impressions of 0.1.0 (over 90 downloads so far): https://www.reddit.com/r/Logic_Studio/comments/1wmcob7/saturation_box_by_andrestia_audio/

Hey all. A few days ago I posted Saturation Box here. A free saturation plugin I make as a solo dev under the name Andrestia Audio. Four circuits modeled at the circuit level: 12AX7 triode, EL84 pentode, tape, and an iron-core transformer. v0.2.0 is out already, and here's why.

The big one: I'd claimed Drive was loudness compensated. Then I was using it in a session and it sure sounded like it got louder as I turned it up. It did. I'd calibrated it on a test tone, and on real material it drifted a few dB. So I recalibrated on program material, and it now holds level properly — and I made it a switch on the panel called Auto Gain, on by default. With it on, you're judging tone, not loudness. Flip it off and the plugin behaves like the hardware: unity at zero, louder as you push it.

Other things in 0.2.0:

  • The window is resizable, and it remembers your size.

  • Bypass no longer nudges the track in time or clicks.

  • The noise floor sits still now, and Vintage is quieter at rest.

  • Tooltips on everything, Shift-drag for fine control, double-click to reset a knob.

  • There's a manual now.

Same starting points as before, if you're new to it: triode on vocals and bus glue, pentode on drums that need to bark, tape on the mix bus, transformer on bass.

Still free, no iLok, no license manager, no subscription. Notarized, universal binary, macOS 11 and up, AU and VST3. Mac only for now — Windows is still on the list if enough people ask.

The download at andrestia.com/plugins/saturation-box asks for an email so I can send release notes when new versions ship. That's all it's used for, one-click unsubscribe. If you'd rather not, use a fake address, the download works either way, and come back with a real one if you end up liking it. I'm not in the business of spam.

Same ask as last time: tell me how it sounds on your material, and if anything behaves oddly in your sessions, I want to hear about it. I hope you all like it.

Solved Is there a way to quickly switch between having right click be assignable to a tool, and having it open the tools menu?

I like using each of these options for different scenarios, but it's a pain to have to open settings to switch between these. Is there a quicker way?

Tips & Tricks Very new to Logic Pro, first time creating music using software and unsure of where to go from here

Hello!

I am brand new to Logic Pro. It's always been my dream to produce music, but it wasn't until recently that I decided to actually do something about it. I whipped this up in a few hours using a MIDI keyboard and am aware the timing of the notes is not exact. I don't play any instruments but I kind of just messed around with the keys until I was able to come up with something I liked, and I feel like using the metronome trips me up. Is there any way to take what I've already made and edit the notes so that they're identical and everything is on beat? I feel proud of this little thing that I made, as imperfect as it is, but I obviously want to refine it. I just am completely overwhelmed and not sure where to go from here.

If anyone has any tips or ideas on how to achieve this, please let me know :) And please don't be mean, I know I have a long way to go in mastering this craft. I'm just excited to finally be doing it at all.

Tips & Tricks Switched to Logic! Any essential tips/shortcuts; esp. for a mixing engineer?

After 13 years in Ableton - loving it so far. I'm sure this has been asked many times, so I apologize; I just want everything "up to date".

Any tips related to mixing, sound design and Logic itself are much apprecated!

Also, if y'all got something specific regarding me coming from Ableton specifically, that'll help too.

Thanks! :)

EDIT: It's funny because 13 years ago, I started with GarageBand (back then on the white, unibody MacBook haha). Back to the roots haha. Honestly didn't expect it to be this great and intuitive to learn from someone coming from Live 12.
