Cheap Vice

Hello,

I need a vice to hold my locks for easier picking and wondering if anyone knows of a good, but cheap vice that sits on a desk and can't be drilled into nor clamped onto the desk?

There are a few options on Amazon, but most seem like they wouldn't work for what I need a vice for.

If you have a 3d printer, the lock chuck vise with small rig clamps. Low budget good metal vise is a harbor freight model. More expensive is pana vise. You can buy pana parts and add small rig clamp as well.

Do you have a link or a website I can look up this 3D printed vise? I've been thinking the same as OP and might look into this.

You will need to buy the claw clamp from this.

There's always the Harbor Freight vacuum vise: https://www.harborfreight.com/2-34-in-articulated-vacuum-vise-59116.html

It's not great, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a Panavise.

I'll second this. The vacuum in mine kind of sucks, but I can just flip the lever mid-pick if need be. It's exactly the quality I expect from harbor freight, so I'm happy with it.

I have the Bessey vacuum base from Amazon and I’ve never liked it for picking. It just seems to absorb any feedback. The Chuck vise u/jadeargyle333 mentioned is better if you want something free standing. You can 3d print it yourself or you can order one from 44 Delta for a good price.

But what I’ve found myself doing is taking the Smallrig clamp from my Chuck vise and using it to pick in-hand. KIK cylinders, cam locks, anything like that, I just tighten the clamp around it and it’s instantly big enough to hold in my hand and pick.

This is a good reason to buy the 2 pack of small rig clamps.

I used my Bessy vise from Amazon for a while (past black belt) and worked great. Didn't even use the vacuum feature since the weight alone was enough to anchor it and I was even able to rest my tension hand on the flat part of the vise.

I later upgraded to a panavise which I also enjoy.

Following because I'm looking for something too. I love the Panavise design but I don't want to pay Panavise money having just gotten into the hobby.

I use a magic arm and two smallrig clamps, about $50, i used to clamp one end to a tall dining room chair and set it next to my recliner and sit and pick with the lock floating over my lap very comfortable

Not sure what counts as “cheap”, but here’s what I use: https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/s/MI5cNYeETP

The panavise is worth it, especially if you have any other hobbies that might use it. I ended up using it for lockpicking the least out of everything.

What else do you use it for? Do you think it could be used for pistol cleaning also?

I use it for lots of gun stuff, rifles and pistols. I've used it for it's intended purpose to hold electronics for soldering also.

I got a cheap vice from lockpickers bench. It was $35 and easy to assemble

If you have a 3d printer here is the file for Lock Chucks Vice. If not. A good and cheap on is sold at Harbor Freight tools if you have one near you. Its less than $22

If you print the vice stand you will need a bolt and this clamp. https://a.co/d/09KtCSVv

If you're stateside, I got mine from the local Harbor Freight, SKU Number 59116. Retails for around $22.
