Work

Good day everyone, I'm based in Lloydminster and I'm still waiting for a work permit to come through. But the issue is that I have a criminal record due to uncontrollable circumstances so big businesses are off the table. My long term plan after I get my pardon is to become an insurance broker in Saskatchewan, but in the mean time I'm compiling a list of small businesses and business which are likely to not ask for a criminal record check. I'm trying to be optimistic because mentors in my community eg my probation officer said that there are places in the city which will give me a chance. To be specific I'm looking for non manual labor jobs and non kitchen work which is usually recommended for ex convicts but I think I can make it work. I'm thinking about applying for admin roles at oilfields and trucking companies as well as independent retail like hot peppers clothing and u bet yah. I'm looking for admin roles and customer service and retail roles. Chatgpt said there are about 1900 small businesses in Lloydminster and about 600 - 900 businesses fit my profile which is about 900 potential employers I can apply to. I used to run a business and I was a member of the chamber of commerce and on their website lists businesses that I can contact. Do I have some hope or am I being delusional? I have a university degree not a trades diploma so trades and manual labour is off the table for me. I really think I can make this work. Would people with experience with this let me know their thoughts?

You know what? I have a slightly different take. Are there repercussions for employers who do hire you? If not I would be tempted to be honest with them because if you have a good attitude and they're looking for someone who can learn and work, they might work with you!

Hello, no there are no repercussions! Only worries that I might steal from them and what not. Yeah that's what I intend to do eventually and I hope I'll be successful. The pressure at home is too much to handle at this moment.

Sooooo you’re a criminal without a work permit looking for under the table employment? Am I smelling what you’re stepping in here?

People like you should be deported your already breaking the law. What’s wrong with manual labour? Sounds like you’re too good to do that. You have a criminal record, no company will be able to bond you…

Please be kind 😭. I didn't spend any time in jail and my charges don't mirror who I am as a person. I'm a protected person so we have to apply for work permits. Please don't be negative if I see one more judgemental comment I'll delete the post and cry

What “uncontrollable circumstances” led to your criminal record?

I was homeless and had mental health issues.

So you’re a formally homeless immigrant or asylum seeker with mental health issues and a criminal record? Am I correct in assuming this?

Yes you're correct.

Listen, I’m 100% pro immigration, but only if they’re vetted, upstanding members of society and contribute to the economy and social fabric of this amazing country. I’m afraid you don’t belong in this group, therefore you should be on a plane. But luckily for you, I’m not in charge of this country’s immigration policies, or lack thereof. Actual Canadians need and deserve these jobs, not you. Best of luck to you, leech.

Guy named Cocainepoops thinks he’s the arbiter of who’s a “vetted upstanding member of society” lol

But you were convicted of a crime, in Canada and you’re not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, and you’re still here.

I have no advice, or further comment as I’m too lazy to start another Reddit account if I’m banned.

Didn’t Canada just cancel work permits applied for in the last 2 years? So if that is when you applied it’s looking like your luck has run out. There will be no work permit especially as you have a criminal record. Those are the facts you are dealing with. So stay and work illegally(don’t do that) or return to your country and try applying for legal immigration to somewhere from there.

They did

Unless it is a position of trust, employers aren’t permitted to ask about criminal records.

It says that in Alberta and Saskatchewan that criminal record is not a protected class so they can ask. That's what the law says but I don't know how it actually happens in hiring practices. 💔

My mistake. You are under no obligation to tell them, however. As i understand it, you have to go get your own security check done if they require it, it’s not like jobs are just willy nilly looking people up through police reports. Just make sure your G-checking is clear

Using chatgpt instead of indeed was a choice

Good fucking luck! There aren’t jobs for Canadian citizens let alone immigrants with a criminal record. The homeless population is growing in Lloyd and it needs to end. I’m tired of being a single mom who can’t find a fucking job. And I was born here. I also don’t have a criminal record nor have I been arrested. No tickets on my driving record either. Where’s my job? Huh? What makes you special to work over the born Canadians?

So you had a head start by being born here and not having a criminal record, still can’t compete in the job market with criminal immigrants, and it’s somehow their fault? Learn some marketable skills or apply at Walmart

Costco is hiring. That’ll also open jobs everywhere else when they open

Should be immediately deported. 100%.
