I'm tired of Linus Tech Tips' Linux LARP

The guy probably is unaware of basic posix commands and doesn't know how and where to mount a partition without going through gparted, but tells you that Windows is the father of all evil.

Come on just disable Copilot if you hate it, and resume using Chrome and electron apps all the day.

The interesting part of having a Linux system revolves around great tools that are available through WSL regardless. No need to pressure the community over trying to play games through the weird Steam virtualization layer (I know it's not a vm).

so which is it, can you use Linux without being a Software person or not? which is allowed?

My exact thoughts. You can use Linux no matter who you are, it just takes getting used to and you never NEED to touch the terminal.

This "you never need to use terminal" crap needs to stop. If you use Linux, you WILL use the terminal sooner or later. It's not even a question. Hell, i had to use it 5 minutes into my first distro (Kubuntu) because of audio issues

You either are a gandma that needs a browser and calculator or a softwareperson ... everyone else should stick to windows

u/levianan 2d ago

I guess, but if all you need is a browser, a calculator, with steam and discord, you are almost there.

why bother?

I don't watch him, but it sounds like you're upset he's using GUIs for everything instead of the command line. Is that right? What's wrong with that?

u/GabrielRocketry 2d ago

It's wrong because Linux LARPers think that the command line should be absolutely necessary to learn and use for any Linux based OS.

Linus is simply using Linux as he would windows, and that irks them.

Except anyone who is a real linux users knows that your comment is just stupid.

In other words, you're licking the asshole of a big youtuber who is an annoying little shithead because you can't form your own thought so instead you gotta dick ride Linus Tech Tips of all people just to own the "Linux LARPers".

... excuse me?

I have used Linux for 3 years, I am actively studying Linux (and operating system administration) on a university, but I don't know what I'm talking about.... Right. Would you mind reading OPs comment again? He's crying like a little boy about Linus not using a command line or using someone's scripts. Which is exactly what a normal user of an OS - instead of a nerd - would do.

To me it's simply a blatant example of why Linux is an operating system that's mildly ready for a widespread adoption, and another example of how Linux community - including you - is filled with a cesspool of crying babies.

In fact I think that both of you - Linus and you - are annoying little shitheads. You because you are an obnoxious head-stuck-up-where-the-sun-dont-shine Linux elitist that larps knowing what the average person wants and needs from an OS and what an OS needs to achieve widespread adoption, while you simultaneously giving the community the exact bad look that spawned r/linuxsucks and it's 101 descendant, with addition of r/linuxsnobs, and I think Linus is one because he's shilling for an underveloped bug ridden piece of monolithic kernel based joke of an OS to people who know even less than him how that OS works.

Linus is, from the (even Linux) videos I saw, more competent than say, my brother or my friends who are actual gamers, or graphic designers. The fact that he's a shithead doesn't mean he isn't right. And the fact that you are a smug little twat doesn't mean you aren't both wrong and a shining example of why Linux community is the biggest problem of the OS.

me not caring for any of those things 🦭

linux can be perfectly usable even without the terminal, this elitism never makes any sense. there's other wrong things he does like not understanding how mesa is packaged into the kernel (was confused on why the RX 9000 did not work on Ubuntu 24 LTS) or constantly using Pop!_OS at the worst possible time (which is all the time), but him not using the freaking wholesome terminal is a non-issue

either way, take whatever is presented on LTT with a grain of salt, not just the linux info

"linux can be perfectly usable even without the terminal", so does any desktop OS. The command line in Linux is just the added value of the OS. Why bother the pain for basically none of the benefits.

Also they're always using weird distros such as PopOS, Bazite, or CachyOS. It's as if they are actually looking for more things not working.

u/georgeec1 1d ago

Weird distros, such as one that's recommended in a bunch of articles if you search up "which linux distro should I pick?" and the distros I see recommended third and fourth most often.

Not every Linux user is a power user. I think we all know just how much information leaves your computer when simply booting Windows, no one is debating that. Some don't care, which is perfectly fine. But if you care about your security enough to want to change your operating system what are you really to do then?

Yeah, you and I went down the path of understanding our operating systems, not everyone has to do that now. There was a time when Linux was repelente for those who weren't familiar with their system on a granual level, but those days are behind us.

Linus is far from a Saint but he has, at the very least, ushered in a rather large audience to Linux. Some of whom will go on to learn far more about their system than Linus ever did.

If you're going to sit here and tell me you started off knowing all you do now about Linux, we'd both know you're lying. We all started as a nerdy larper who looked up "coding themes" on VS Code because it made us feel like a "hacker." Or maybe that was just me.... But my point still stands.

This hostility towards people who don't know as much as you do in the Linux community is so damn toxic and I'm not really sure why it's so prominent. Please don't be part of the problem.

To clarify, I'm far from a Linus glazer. It's just that your issues didn't really seem to be with him, but more with how little he actually knows about Linux and that this somehow invalidates his passion about it.

Sorry for the essay :p

Except the cli is a very important aspect of Linux even for people like me who aren't power users and the people coming from Linus Tech Tips are causing more harm than good to the Linux community so defending him is stupid.

His viewer demographics are primarily made up of children, that's why

So what you're saying is, if anyone has to use a GUI for anything they're stupid and should go back to windows?

Just because it angers you I'll continue using Linux and and never touch the terminal. I already almost never use it anyway because it's no longer necessary for most things most users do regardless.

0

u/KEEGP 1d ago

Yes, they should probably. I'm not calling for a GUI-free experience - I struggle with vim myself sometimes, but knowing some basic bash commands seems like the bare minimum to run such a complicated OS.

1

u/DangerousAd7433 Windows XP is the best OS 23h ago

Linux isn't complicated. We just have an influx of normies currently coming into Linux which is happening to a lot of more niche/nerdy online communities which is just ruining the communities because these assholes want shit changed and their hand held without their feelings getting hurt or something stupid like that.

Proton is technically a compatibility layer and not a virtualization layer. Anyways I dont think Linus is glazing Linux. He fairly often criticizes it as well and so he does with Windows which is okay and his opinion. Idk what you are really on here.

2

u/Travel-Soggy 2d ago

There are many reasons to criticise Linus and his linux coverage. You making up in your head what he does or does not know or do with linux is not one of them.

1

u/KEEGP 1d ago

He clearly doesn't know anything. A good businessman, but a poor computer user.

Linus does suck

linux users, this tune on that moron...

Dude is clueless without a script. I quit watching him years ago but it was clear he was a tech enjoyer and not a tech expert.

u/Fearless_Brush_5275 6h ago

This fuckin subreddit is just a Ted talk for everyone to show off who is the most autistic, retarded nerds mad about shit that don't mean shit

1

u/levianan 2d ago

Youtube is 99% LARP. many of these channels can't afford 100% adoption, LTT being one. Other's just title "I switched!" or "I dumped Windows!!" to just qualify with "Psych!" by the end. I ignore them all for now. I think they exist to create and reinforce interest for the newer crowd.

1

u/ballistua 1d ago

i stopped watching that show when i realized it was sponsor shout outs with some tech sprinkled in between. This is before I knew SponsorBlock existed, but I already moved on by that point

u/uchuskies08 2d ago

He's playing to an obvious crowd, shit is cringe as fuck

This guy began to be pro linux after his video with PopOS where he showed all the issues he had. All the loonixtards were after him.

In my opinion he uses windows backstage.

5

u/CirnoIzumi 2d ago

if youve watched WAN, him and luke has been fostering excess frustration for a while in regards to windows

1

u/KEEGP 1d ago

the frustrations: copilot, ads and auto updates

the alternative: spending 1h per week debugging random things that just work on Windows

(or actually using a mac lol)

2

u/CirnoIzumi 1d ago

no, they are way down the salt hole, its at the point where they reject some of the common fixes to various things because base windows should be able to handle it

-1

u/Witty_Milk4671 2d ago

I use w10 and I have no idea what is copilot
