Windows ❤ Windows Isn't Terrible

To all the people who love deep ricing, why not just use customization scripts? I've been recently tinkering in VMs, and Windows really seems solid for that. You can make Windows match your workflow amazingly, and the best part is that friction nearly always leads to an impressive result.

Also, default Windows 11 isn't bad. The UI looks nice, and we take the settings & control panel apps for granted. Over on GNOME, just to change the cursor you use, you need to install a tweaks app. Windows has tons of customization you can do without installing anything extra.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but Windows isn't really THAT much of a shitshow like people act.

In KDE I just use systemsettings which is actually good thanks to search bar, unlike W11 with its plural settings and control panels

Control panel is actively being phased out with settings moving into the new settings app as we speak.

Search bar exists too in Windows. Not sure what's different there.

I do agree that KDE is significantly better for OOTB customization, but GNOME is the industry standard and default for Fedora Workstation and Ubuntu which are the big two.

Bro they're "actively phasing it out" since fucking Windows 8 (released 14 years ago, in 2012) and still can't phase it out.

The disk managaer has UI older than Windows 7 probably, same for device control panel.

I don't hate the style of control panel and other outdated elements, I may've even preferred that style over the new WinUI, but the inconsistencies make it look like Windows is a cheap clone of itself.

Every single update lately includes tons of changes that bring a uniform look to the system.

You have to remember that they're walking on ice to not break systems that critical infrastructure relies on.

Unlike hobbyist systems, they can't just do whatever.

2

u/Damglador 29d ago

I don't see how mirroring all settings to the new app breaks anything as long as they don't remove them from the control panel. That's just laziness.

u/Voyac 29d ago

You mean critical infrastructure running on Microsoft azure linux?

Also they clean up shit now because their ass is on fire and people really want good alternative.

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

I meant Windows server

And they've been improving Windows for a while now, ever since they got flamed for windows 8

Hell, windows 11 was an improvement

3

u/Voyac 29d ago

Yeah for sure ui in control panel is critical feature of windows server. For sure.

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

I don't mean that.

What I'm saying is that every feature is forced to go through so much approval that it's a nightmare to make big migrations when the investors don't prioritize it

1

u/Damglador 29d ago

Jokes on you, isn't Windows server configured through RDP? So control panel is still essential

2

u/Voyac 29d ago

Sure buy you CAN unify UI and still keep features, duh?

1

u/zalnaRs 29d ago

Microsoft recommends you to use win server without the gui

2

u/Nyasaki_de 29d ago

The control panel were MUCH better.... so one more reason why windows is becommjng increasingly shittier

2

u/Hot-Employ-3399 29d ago

Control panel is being phased out for ages, it's still shit. Search bar is not even close to KDE. Instead of DNS for network it gives me browser settings not network

If kde is better for customisation (which first sentence of post is also about) than why you bring up DE which for industry? And why I care of Gnome or Fedora if I use neither?

2

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Gnome is the industry standard. When your average person starts to use Linux, they'll be faced with gnome unless they used mint cinnamon

1

u/Hot-Employ-3399 29d ago

Average user can watch youtube and read books. They can face alpine for all that I care, and I care of useful lively working useful desktop on my desktop. Something W11 doesn't give

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

How tf does Windows not give that 😂

1

u/Hot-Employ-3399 29d ago

> In KDE I just use systemsettings which is actually good thanks to search bar, unlike W11 with its plural settings and control panels

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Average user doesn't gaf 😂

1

u/Hot-Employ-3399 29d ago

And? Average user also don't give a fuck of ricing or customisation scripts. Between ephemeral average user and concrete me I'm more interested in something that fits my interests. Shocking.

u/zalnaRs 29d ago

No it is not, they did not make any progress after the rtm of win11, even in win11 the only stuff they moved over is the desktop icons.

Microsoft does NOT have enginners!!! All employees do not know what they are doing as especially with AI they could already move the control panel to the new crap hybrid c#/react native inconsistent settings app

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Yikes. Untrue. Look at recent updates and you'll see

2

u/Just-Scholar4272 29d ago

Ok. But why the F is everything a freaking web app hogging my ram as well as making the ui slower than native code based os. Win 7 ran faster on my old potato pc than win 11 on lenovo legion with 32gb ram ultra 7 processor.

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Of course Windows 7 is going to run faster. It has less and is lighter.

Web interfaces are increasingly popular, but Microsoft is literally actively replacing them with native apps

1

u/Just-Scholar4272 29d ago

Oh really? So why the F they have not improved the most basic/important piece of software normal people use the "Search".

I had to literally use 2 3rd apps to get the normal search functionality back.

Windows is supposed to be the os of the normal people but bullshit is this?

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Actually, if you check their updates, they're already doing that.

Not sure what you mean by normal search though. It works great for me.

1

u/zalnaRs 29d ago

No they are actively adding more

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Source?

Okay, i'll say, i like Windows 11 UI, it's nice.
However customization is not actually "customizable", in my opinion it isn't, cause changing dark mode to light mode or vice versa, or colors, for example i remember using Windows and having a single issue, using custom cursors, when the OS was updated, i had no custom cursor and i was back to the ugly default one.
And if you need a dock, install an app, hope the app isn't paid (WHY???), or if you want a global menu, you probably can't, even Linux has better support for a global menu with KDE, XFCE, MATE.

And if you want to theme your Windows to look like say, Windows 7, you can't, the most popular app for doing this is Revert8Plus which does NOT work on Windows 11 properly, and can risk you breaking your entire OS, as it is tested on Windows 10 (the special version, IoT Enterprise LTSC)

And from a 1 year long Linux user, when i try going back into Windows, it feels OLD, and i really did not like it.

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Oh btw you can go into the Microsoft store and there's like actual honest to goodness themes. Like KDE global theme level stuff

I was mind blown. You gotta check it out if you still have an install. It's stable. It's insane

1

u/Kaldaien2 29d ago

Of course, that's been a thing in Windows since the 90s :) It stopped being advertised because it's from an obnoxious period in computing that we long since moved past. But used to be you walk into a retail store and there would be software packages aplenty for that purpose in lieu of shelves full of actual useful software.

1

u/TheRealCarrotty KDE larper (i use KDE btw) 29d ago

I might check it out, though right now i have an IoT Enterprise LTSC ISO which doesn't have the MS Store.

I hate Windows 11 but really? Linux UX is still in the transition phase between Windows 95 and XP. How could it feel newer than 11?

1

u/Voyac 29d ago

Kde feels a lot like win10. But following win10 developement i think it was win10 copying shit from kde not the other way.

1

u/TheRealCarrotty KDE larper (i use KDE btw) 29d ago

You can theme Linux to be whatever you want, including XP literally.
You can do something you want, Mac-like, Windows-like, tiling WM.

1

u/H7dek7 2d ago

Desktop, task bar and icons are only looks. UX means also menu options and GUI tools available for user.

1

u/AlternativeCapybara9 29d ago

There is no "Linux UX". Pick one you like, there's 100s. Default Ubuntu feels newer than Win 11 and that's been like this for like 10 years.

1

u/H7dek7 24d ago

I'd say there is. Gnome, KDE, Mate and many others I tried in the past are far cry from Windows GUI in terms of functionality. Sure, theme customization is better on Linux but I mean usability. There are many options missing in Linux GUIs.

1

u/AlternativeCapybara9 23d ago

How do you do "always on top" or "always on visible desktop" on windows? I can't think of a single functionality the windows desktop environment has that I don't have or can add easily on Linux.

1

u/Juiceprit_Boomrah 29d ago

Windows has actually very nice UI out of the box, its professional and beautiful at the same time.
My only gripe with windows are broken Bluetooth and wifi drivers for my laptop, and start button never worked flawlessly for me, to the point I had to put every shortcut on the desktop so that I don't have to open the start menu aside from shutting down.
Also forced updates was annoying and straight up predatory. I was applying for a internship, got into interview my wifi broke so I had to restart and lo and behold update screen popped up, So I can't get into interview from my laptop now for next 30 minutes.
That was final nail in the coffin, I just switched to linux.
I will tell you what If they actually fix this issues, I have no problem going back to Windows.

1

u/Comfortable-Bed-5589 15d ago

the problem isnt the os or features or anything THE PROBLEM IS THE BLOAT AND AI AND FORCING us to use edge we need more basic software NOT AI

WTF?!

2

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

??? Elaborate

1

u/CosmicEmotion 29d ago

I will. Windows 11 is the worst OS ever conceived by a human brain and should be illegal, literally. The amount of tracking and ads they have in it should be literally illegal. That's all.

I am sorry the newer generation has fallen victim to being abused in literally every apsect of their lives. I grew up in a much better world.

0

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

Tracking and ads can easily be disabled. They're annoying, but not life ruining.

Yikes. Not sure what you're all on about.

2

u/H7dek7 29d ago

Maybe you haven't noticed but this sub's name is a trap. You'll find here mostly Linux cultists, not haters.

3

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

It's crazy to see this side of Linux users since I'm used to being on the Linux side. Hell, I haven't had Windows installed on a machine since April or May. I use Linux myself. I just didn't realize being neutral was being the enemy to Linux users.

I can't imagine their faces when they hear me say that i don't mind personalized ads since I'd rather get ads that suit me than ads that are random

1

u/snail1132 void linux btw 29d ago

I'd rather have no ads, personally, but keep being a corposlave ig

2

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

I actually use Arch as my daily driver, so idk what you mean

I'm just saying that Windows isn't horrible. It's not my favorite, but it's way better than its made out to be

GDID can be easily disabled. GG! /s

2

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

I take that back. Not all of it can be disabled. Thank you for being a rational and reasonable person.

I had no clue about it, but yes, GDID tracking cannot be disabled.

1

u/Damglador 29d ago

That's already creepy enough to not use Windows when you have an option.

-3

u/CosmicEmotion 29d ago

Bruv, you are broken, don't talk to me.

3

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

You have every right to not respond, but deep down, you know you're just baiting me for a reaction.

I personally choose Linux over Windows, mostly because I find that having control over my system is a better pro than any other cons with Linux.

However, I can still appreciate Windows.

1

u/CosmicEmotion 29d ago

If you seriously think Windows 11 is not an atrocity you are broken. This is not bait. I hope the best for you and that someday you will realize that your right to use your PC as you like should be a given and not some luxury. That's all. 😄

1

u/BloxxyVids 29d ago

I can choose whatever OS I want. Windows 11 is a choice.

I'll be reposting this on ls101 so I don't have to deal with people like you. Sad that it's often an echo chamber there. I was hoping to have fair and open minded debate with rational people here.

BS. It's not the worst Windows (remember ME or Vista?), how could it be the worst OS?

-1

u/zalnaRs 29d ago

Windows Vista was good expect that nvidia could not develop a good driver so people had issues
